day one of conference

Today was a seemingly good day! I made the finals for both the 200 and the 400. I like the 200 much better, mainly because I get to walk people down! So on the track, I was happy after today. Today was also really funny! I watched Patria fall UP the bleachers at the track meet in front of everyone on our team. I even caught Korie drinking coffee creamers with sugar. In our night adventures, I enjoyed laughing at myself as I fell off the bed (at least I had a graceful slip). The best part of our night was laughing at the coaches and the interesting noises that they made!

-G. Houston-

Today was...well...um yea...

Overall the team did really well (YAY LADY BUCS) ! I am really mad at myself for running my slowest time in the past two or three years (I really don't know what happened and I think I will be avoiding coach for a minute). My other two races went pretty well, so I happy about that. I had to have a pep talk in order to get focused for tomorrow, because today did not go how I wanted. The night ended pretty well with plenty of food (YUM I love to eat) and of course plenty of laughs with the team. The laughter really took off in our team meeting when we attempted to discuss today's events. Because our team is slightly goofy we enjoyed people falling off of the bed and finding other ways to embarrass themselves with entertaining noises. Now its time to call it a night, take a shower, and lay down. I think I will eat some more and talk on the phone so that I can truly be prepared for tomorrow.

Big South Championships - Day 1

Today was quite a day. This is the smallest indoor meet that we have been to all year. From Virginia Tech to East Tennessee to New York City to Clemson and we still haven't seen it all. Still, with only nine teams competing at the conference championship, we still have to fight to keep our standings and be able to score points. There isn't much pressure in the air because this is a place where we have been before. For some, this is their first collegiate meet period. It has been fun to see how a lot of the freshmen have stepped it up and have qualified for the finals in day 2. I think it helps the upperclassmen to realize that somebody is on their heels when they least expect. The team is evenly balanced and has standouts in every area of competition. Sprints, throws, distance have all recognized throughout the team. As day 1 came to a close, it was just in preparation for day 2...

Life as a Jumper

Listening to music gets me ready to jump!Today I listened to tons of music and was super ready. I set a personal record in long jump with a 18.5 jump and ended up getting 2nd in the conference. Afterwards I had fun, the games were finally over. Now its time for me to get ready for tomorrow...that means candy!

S. Casey

Morning with the track girls!

THE MORNING IS HERE and most of us just finished eating breakfast. Now we are back in the room laying down. Some of the girls are getting ready to leave and head to the track for the multi events. I will still be in the room along with one of my roommates (YAY!!!!). We get to sleep in and lay around and be lazy for a few more hours, so we will be taking full advantage of this opportunity! We are slightly upset because we do not have the Disney channel or even Nickelodeon (we're kids at heart), so we are trying to find something entertaining to watch. Nothing exciting has happened yet, but with us an unplanned adventure is always right around the corner!

Weekly Recap - Feb. 15 - Feb. 22

Our apologies for not getting this up yesterday, but a busy week combined with a day of no internet kept it from happening. We did still want to make sure you were aware of all of the good things happening in CSU athletics.

We have added a twitter site to help you get the most up to date information about CSU. If you are interested in receiving that update, make sure you find us on twitter.com/csusports .

Now, on to the good stuff, the weekly recap and upcoming schedules.

Monday, Feb. 16 – Tuesday, Feb. 17 – Mgolf @ Jacksonville Invitational
The men’s golf team turned in a 931 team score after three rounds at TPC at Sawgrass, finishing seventh overall, three shots behind FAU. Kelvin Day shot the best round of the tournament for CSU with a 73 on day one and finished 10th individually with a 223 combined score.

Monday, Feb. 16 – MBB vs. Radford
Going against the top team in the Big South, the men’s basketball team gave them all they could handle, but fell 80-71, despite outscoring Radford by four in the second half. Omar Carter again led the way for CSU with a double-double, dropping in 18 points and 12 rebounds. Jamarco Warren overcame a slow start to drop 16 points, while Giedrius Knysas added 14.

Friday, Feb. 20 – Sunday, Feb. 22 – SB @ Georgia Southern Tournament
The Buccaneer softball team hit the road for the Georgia Southern Tournament, posting a 1-3 record, including a 10-1 victory over Oakland. Gail Matsushima led the way offensively for CSU with five hits in eight at-bats for a .625 average. She score three times, and three of her five hits were for extra bases, including a homerun. Jamie Wellons started all four games, while Caitlin Allen and Brittany York each pitched scoreless innings.

Friday, Feb. 20 – Sunday, Feb. 22 – BASE vs. Marist
After dropping the first two games to Marist on Friday and Saturday, the baseball team moved Sunday’s game to Buccaneer Ballpark and in front of the biggest crowd of the weekend, beat the Red Foxes 4-3 in dramatic fashion. Freshman Patrick Dolan stole the show with a combined 8-for-12 weekend including three doubles and a triple. Nick Chinners and Mark Perry each had four hits in eight at bats, with Perry getting the lone long-ball of the weekend.

Friday, Feb. 20 – Tennis vs. ETSU
Brooke Pletcher went 2-0 against the Buccaneers of ETSU, combining with Leonie Mandelkow to win their doubles match, and also taking down ETSU’s Byrne 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Bucs fell 5-2. Andrea Schutte also won her singles match 6-3, 6-1.

Saturday, Feb. 21 – Tennis vs. UNC Asheville
CSU battled hard against one of the leaders in the conference, UNC Asheville, but eventually fell 4-3 in their first evening match of the year. Andrea Schutte and Angie Torres won their doubles match, but again CSU was unable to nab the doubles point, dropping the other two contests. Olga Makhova, Brooke Pletcher and Leonie Mandelkow all won their singles matches, while Andrea Schutte, Marija Dzakovic and Angie Torres all went to three sets, but were not able to pull out the victory in the Big South opener.

Saturday, Feb. 21 – WBB vs. Radford
It was all pink and all smiles for CSU as they hosted their 2009 Pink Zone game against Radford. Trailing by seven at halftime, the Lady Buccaneers used a 54-point explosion in the second half to win going away 80-63. Pam Tolbert had 23 points to lead the way, including five three-pointers, while Katie Tull hit three triples and ended with 21 points. Four-time Big South freshman of the Week Ali Schwagmeyer added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. It was a 41-36 Radford lead with 15:14 to go in the game, before CSU put together a 22-8 run over nine minutes to claim a 58-49 lead, never looking back in the victory.

Saturday, Feb. 21 – MBB vs. Presbyterian
Trying to cap off a perfect basketball double-header, the men’s team took the court against Presbyterian, needing a win to stay alive in the Conference race. You could feel the sense of urgency in the program as the Bucs overcame a 10-point halftime deficit with great defense to win 57-52. CSU surrendered just 18 points in the second half to aid in the victory. Omar Carter just missed another double-double with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Are you ready to Think Pink?

If you aren't already aware, the WBCA is sponsoring the Pink Zone games again this season. When flipping through the channels you may have run across some of these games on TV. The crowd is all in pink, the players have pink ribbons, pink shoes, sometimes even pink jerseys.

Charleston Southern is holding their own Pink Zone game, this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. as the Lady Buccaneers take on Radford. With just a $5 donation, you can get your own pair of pink Crocs, and Bruster's will be out selling ice cream, with their proceeds going to help support the cause.

All of this is done to continue to bring awareness to the reality that is breast cancer. Most of us know someone who has been affected by this, and CSU is trying to do its part to help raise awareness and also money for cancer research.

Make your plans to wear pink and attend the women's basketball game, Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. Then stick around and watch the men's team take on Presbyterian immediately following as the second-half of the double-header.

Weekly Recap - Feb. 9 - 15

Monday, Feb. 9 – WBB @ High Point
The women’s basketball team went on the road and took down one of the top teams in the Big South this year, handing High Point an 82-79 loss. It was just the third conference loss of the season for HPU. CSU used 17 three-pointers to grab the victory, shattering the school and Big South records for threes made in a game. It would be one of two records that CSU would take down during the week. Pam Tolbert led the way with 20 points, including six threes, while Tina DeCarvalho connected on five of her eight three-point attempts for 15 points. Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Monday, Feb. 9 – MBB @ VMI
Winning on the roadh is never easy, and it’s even harder when you are playing at VMI, the nation’s top-scoring team. The Bucs did all they could to hang with the Keydets before eventually falling 82-76. The game was closer than the final score would indicate as there were eight ties and 12 lead changes, including a nine-point lead with seven minutes left. Omar Carter recorded a double-double for the sixth time this year while Jamarco Warren led the team with 21 points.

Friday, Feb. 13 – Tennis vs. USC Upstate
Originally scheduled to play Saturday, the CSU tennis team moved their match to Friday due to a wet forecast. It was not a move that benefited the Lady Bucs as they fell 6-1 to USC Upstate. Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic won their doubles match, but close losses (8-6, 9-7) in the other two gave USCU the point. Makhova moved her individual record to 2-0 on the season winning easily in her singles match 6-2, 6-2, but it would prove to be the only singles victory of the day for CSU.

Friday, Feb. 13 – Saturday, Feb. 14 – SB @ Camel Stampede hosted by Campbell University
Trying to ride the momentum of a big three-game sweep of N.C. Central, the softball team traveled to Campbell to take on Ohio, Bucknell and St. Joseph’s as well as the host school. CSU dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in game one to Ohio, but bounced back to easily defeat Bucknell 9-1. Up late in the game in their third game of the day against St. Joseph’s, costly errors allowed SJU to put three runs on the board and take the game 3-1. In their only game Saturday, CSU tallied five hits but no runs as they fell to the host Camels, 5-0. Megan Lombard led the way with five hits for the tournament, scoring three runs. Jamie Wellons had four hits including a triple, and led the team with four RBI.

Friday, Feb. 13 – Saturday, Feb. 14 – Track @ Tiger Paw Invitational
Three school records fell over the weekend as CSU continued to prove they belong amongst the best the in nation. In her first 60m dash event of the season, Dionne Gibson broke her third school record of the year (200m/400m) and won the event with a record time of 7.55 seconds. Gibson also teamed up with Amerikorie Odey, Jessica Thomas and Chidi Walsh to run 3:51.50, breaking the school’s 4x400m record as well. On the men’s side, it was James Hayes who tossed the weight 56 feet, 1.25 inches (17.11m), almost four feet past his previous best. His mark broke the nine-year-old school record, held by throwing coach Josh Aydlette. A number of other season and personal bests were also accomplished during the two day meet.

Saturday, Feb. 14 – WBB @ Coastal Carolina
CSU needed just five three pointers to tie the single-season record in the Big South, a feat they accomplished in the first half alone against the Chanticleers. They went on to hit 10 threes in the game, shattering the record with five regular season games remaining. Katie Tull single-handedly put CSU over the mark, making six of her 10 three point attempts, leading all scorers in the game with 23 points. Unfortunately for CSU, they fell in heartbreaking fashion as Amanda Stull hit two free throws with :02 on the clock to push CCU to the 63-62 victory over the Lady Buccaneers.

Saturday, Feb. 14 – MBB vs. Liberty
Another three point record fell Saturday, this time on the men’s side at the Buc Dome. Sophomore guard Jamarco Warren needed just two three pointers to break the CSU single-season record, a record he battled Chris Moore for last season. Moore set the record at 81 threes, but with five threes in the game, Warren set the new mark at 85 with five games left in the regular season. Omar Carter again tallied a double-double, his seventh of the year and fifth in the last six games.

Schedule For the Week:
