Weekly Recap - January 24-30, 2011

The second of two weeks on the road, the MBB team had a thrilling win at Radford, while the track teams competed at South Carolina in a midweek meet.

Averaging 17.5 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game in two Big South Conference games this week, Kelvin Martin has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Martin started out the week with 24 points and 13 rebounds in an overtime victory at Radford, leading the team in both categories. In that game, he scored the final five points of regulation, including his first 3-pointer of the season, to tie the game and extend it into overtime. He followed that performance up with 11 points and six rebounds against High Point, shooting 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line, giving him an 85 percent clip from the charity stripe.

Also nominated: Kelsey Wasmer (Women’s Basketball)

January 24 – WBB @ Radford – L, 60-56
A Shay Jones 3-pointer with 0:23 left in the game cut the Radford lead to four, but CSU could not find another basket at the end of the game, falling on the road to one of the league-leaders. Lakeitha Alson had 13 points, while Jones finished with 11, including three triples in the game. With 10 points, Kelsey Wasmer hit the 1,000 point mark for her career at CSU.

January 25 – Tennis @ #10 Clemson – L, 4-0
The Bucs knew it would be a tough start to the season with a pair of nationally ranked opponents to start it off, the highest of which was #10 Clemson. The Tigers won the doubles point with 8-4, 8-6 and 8-0 scores, and then rolled in three singles matches, leaving the other three unfinished. Brooke Pletcher has played well in the early season as a member of the doubles team that fell 8-6, also playing the closest singles match falling 6-4 in the first set and leading 2-1 in the second before it was left unfinished.

January 26 – Track and Field @ Gamecock Open
It was a strange track, with three lanes and four 90-degree turns, and even though the times may not have been what CSU would normally expect, they still posted high finishes against members of the South Carolina, Benedict, and South Carolina State programs. Patria Norman had a trio of runner-up finishes, doing so in the 55m hurdles, the high jump and the shot put events. Tenasia White won the weight throw, Adrienne Cuff finished second in the 800m run, and Riyadh Smith claimed third in the 400m dash. For the men, Avery Coe won the 400m dash, while Zack Pociatek won the weight throw and Lavon Allen finished second in the 55m dash.

January 27 – MBB @ Radford – W,70-62 (OT)
Up big midway through the second half, Radford made a furious charge on their home court, taking a five-point lead with less than a minute to go. Kelvin Martin hit the first three of his season, then got fouled on his way to the basket, sinking both free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime. From there, the Bucs composed themselves and used a 9-1 advantage to seal the road victory in the Big South, putting them a half game up on Asheville in the standings.

January 29 – MBB @ High Point – L, 77-75
The Bucs looked for late-game heroics again as they found themselves trailing by one with 2:41 to go in the contest. The Bucs had six possessions in the last 2:41, but hit just one shot, and could not maintain a one-point lead on the road for the final minute. Five players, including four of the starting five had double-figures for CSU, led by Jamarco Warren’s 19 points.

Weekly Recap - January 17-23, 2011

It was a busy weekend for CSU as both the men’s and women’s indoor track and field programs began their seasons, men’s and women’s basketball continued in conference play and the tennis team took on a very solid ACC opponent to start their 2011 campaign.

Katie Tull has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after breaking the Big South Career 3-Point record and leading the Bucs to a 1-1 record on the week.

CSU started off the week with an 85-74 victory over Asheville, a game in which Tull had 27 points and tied the record, earning her Big South Player of the Week honors. She followed up with 11 points against Liberty, including three long-range shots, the first of which put her all alone atop the career charts. She has now scored in double figures in six-straight games for CSU.

Also nominate: Jamarco Warren (Men’s Basketball), Edward Ponton (Men's Track and Field), Daisy Whitaker (Women's Track and Field)

January 17 – WBB vs. Asheville – W, 85-74 In the previous two games, CSU had struggled to score the basketball, but that was not the case on Monday as the Bucs dropped 85 on Asheville in a Big South victory. Katie Tull had 27 points and tied the Big South career record for 3-pointers made (more on that in a minute). A huge help in the victory was Helen Terry, who caught fire early and finished the game with 23 points. Kelsey Wasmer and Lakeitha Alston continued to be steady with 11 points each, finishing one-two in rebounded with nine and eight, respectively.

January 20 – MBB vs. Gardner-Webb – L, 50-58 Jamarco Warren hit five of the team’s seven 3-pointers but it wasn’t enough for the Bucs to steal a victory on the road in the Big South. Up by one at halftime, the Bucs looked like they were in good position as they have outscored nearly every opponent in the second half this year, but GWU proved too tough at home as they snapped a nine-game losing streak and beat CSU for the sixth time in a row.

January 21-22 – Track & Field at Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational Both track programs went up to Blacksburg this weekend to start the 2011 indoor season. Both had plenty of success in the early season with top-20 finishes in a highly competitive field. Daisy Whitaker broke the freshman shot put record, while Edward Ponton broke the 60m hurdles school record. A couple of other records nearly fell, but surely will by the end of the season.

January 22 – Tennis at #46 North Carolina State – L, 0-7 They knew it would be a tough matchup to start the season as the Bucs traveled up to face #46 N.C. State, and it was. Reigning Big South Player of the Year Olga Makhova was involved in the closest match as she fell 6-3, 6-1, while Alexandra Walters and Brooke Pletcher fell 8-4 in the closest doubles match.

January 22 – MBB at Asheville – L, 69-77Down by as many as 13, the Bucs cut the Asheville lead to two but couldn’t take the late lead as they again fell on the road in Big South play. Jamarco Warren did more into the top-10 in career points in the Big South and second in CSU history after dropping 22 points in the loss. Kelvin Martin had 16 points and Jeremy Sexton had 11, while Kenny Mitchell narrowly missed the double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
January 22 – WBB at Liberty – L, 63-49Too much height was the name of the game as the Bucs went on the road to Liberty. CSU managed just a 29 percent clip from the field and 28 percent from 3-point range, while Liberty got big points from their starting five. Only four of the Flames’ 63 points came from the bench. With her first three of the game (she hit three total), Katie Tull move atop the leader board in career threes made in the Big South Conference, a tremendous accomplishment with 10 games to go in the regular season.

What’s coming up? January 24 – WBB @ Radford – 7 p.m.
January 25 – Tennis @ #11 Clemson – 1 p.m.
January 26 – Track and Field @ Gamecock Open
January 27 – MBB @ Radford – 7 p.m.
January 29 – MBB @ High Point – 7 p.m.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Margaret Spaulding - January 19, 2011

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey Bucs Fans!

The new semester got off to a slow start with all the delays due to ice, not that I minded (Haha). Classes were postponed for a day and a half making Christmas break just a little bit longer. And after I thought things couldn’t get better, we started a three game winning streak. First we took down Coastal in over time, then PC. Our defense Monday night soundly put away UNC Asheville. I’m so excited to watch our season unfold and be a part of my team’s success. Practices have been great and everyone is put forth the effort to become Big South Champions. It’s great to be a part of a team where everyone knows what hard work is.

Classes have also been good……..so far. All my professors seem interesting. My favorite class by far is my Political Science class. We have interesting discussions and debates based on our reading. Since I plan on being a lawyer one day debating is particularly enjoyable to me. The work isn’t very heavy but its tons of reading. As much as I love class I still can’t wait until it’s over so I can start my summer break.

Weekly Recap - January 10-16, 2011

It was a perfect week for the Buccaneers as the two basketball teams combined to go 4-0 in Big South Conference play! Both teams are moving up the rankings as we near the midpoint in the conference season.

Kelsey Wasmer averaged 17 points and 10.5 rebounds in two Big South victories this week for CSU. She led the team in scoring in both games, and scored the final four points in the victory over Presbyterian College.

Wasmer tied for team-high honors with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the Bucs’ overtime victory over Coastal Carolina. Then, in the second game of the week, Wasmer had 19 points and six rebounds, but hit two late free throws to put CSU up by three, and a jumper as the shot clock expired to make it a five point lead with 0:33 left in the game. It would prove to be the final four points of the game as CSU won its second-straight Big South game.

Also nominate: Kelvin Martin (Men’s Basketball)

January 11 – WBB @ Coastal Carolina – W, 60-53 (OT)
After icy roads forced the two teams to postpone their contest for a day, CSU made it up to Conway and walked out with a thrilling overtime victory. It was the first OT game of the year for CSU. The big three did it again for CSU as Lakeitha Alston and Kelsey Wasmer each had 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Katie Tull added 12 points to account for more than 70 percent of the team’s points in the game.

January 13 – MBB vs. Presbyterian - W, 76-71
Presbyterian made a late charge after CSU led by double-digits for most of the game, but it was clutch free throws down the stretch that allowed the Bucs to hold on and grab the five-point victory. The win moved CSU to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big South. The Bucs hit 23 of 30 free throws, and were led by Jamarco Warren (22 points), Kelvin Martin (19 points, 13 rebounds), and Kenny Mitchell (15 points). The final nine points of the game for CSU came at the charity stripe.

January 15 – WBB vs. Presbyterian – W, 52-47
When the women’s team took on PC, Saturday, it was the opposite story as CSU trailed the visitors for the majority of the game. The Bucs cut the lead to two (47-45) on a couple of Kelsey Wasmer free throws, and then finally took the lead in a big way with 2:39 on the clock as CSU finished off a five-point play. Helen Terry launched a deep three to put CSU up by one, and as the shot was going up, a PC player blew through Wasmer’s screen, giving the senior a chance to add two more points at the free throw line, which she did. With time running out on the shot clock, Wasmer again had the dagger, nailing a jumper with 0:33 left in the game to make it a two-possession game.

January 15 – MBB vs. Winthrop – W, 69-60
A battle for third place in the league went the way of the home team as the Bucs jumped out to a huge lead to start the game and then held on to sit alone in third place. It was a 26-10 run to start the game for CSU as everything went their way early. From there, it was an 86 percent effort from the free throw line, making more free throws (25) than field goals (18) that allowed CSU to earn the victory. Jamarco Warren had 27 points, 13 of which came from the free throw line as he was near perfect (13-14). Martin again got his double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

What’s coming up?
January 17 – WBB vs. Asheville – 7 p.m.
January 20 – MBB @ Gardner-Webb – 7 p.m.
January 21-22 – Track & Field @ Virginia Tech Invitational
January 22 – W. Tennis @ #47 North Carolina State – Noon

Weekly Recap - January 3-9

It may be snowy and icy outside depending on where you are, but the Buccaneer basketball teams are heating up the hardwood, and with four home games coming up this week (and next Monday). Both teams have played extremely well at home and are facing key Big South matchups so make sure you come out and support the teams!

Johathan Brooks posted a career-best week for CSU, helping the Buccaneers to a 1-1 record on the road, earning him CSU Athlete of the Week honors.

Brooks averaged 10.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game over the two-game Big South span. He had 12 points and a career-high 14 points against Liberty, his second double-double of the year, and added nine points, 13 rebounds in the victory over VMI. He also had a career-best five assists and four blocked shots against the Keydets.

Also nominate: Katie Tull (Women’s Basketball), Kelvin Martin (Men’s Basketball)

January 3 – WBB @ Gardner-Webb – L, 67-51
The Bucs knew they had a tough test in Gardner-Webb, but hung around to sit within five points at halftime, despite shooting just 37 percent to GWU’s 45 percent. Things just got worse for CSU in the second, though, as they hit just one of 14 three point attempts (7.1 percent) and GWU used four double-digit scoring performances to distance themselves. The Bucs spread out the scoring, but Katie Tull was the only one who manager more than 10 points.

January 6 – MBB @ Liberty – L, 68-54
The road woes continued for CSU against a very good Liberty team as Flames guard Jesse Sanders posted an impressive triple-double performance to do-in the Bucs. Johathan Brooks had 12 points and 14 rebounds for CSU, while Jeremy Sexton poured in 17 points, but a slow start (36 percent shooting in the first half) allowed LU to grab a 10-point halftime lead and extended it to as many as 25 midway through the second half.

January 8 – WBB @ Winthrop – L, 75-53
The second of three-straight road games for the women’s basketball team, CSU had to face Winthrop on the road. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, because the story is very similar to the game against GWU. The Bucs trailed by just two at halftime, shooting 37 percent, and allowing the other team to shoot 50 percent. The second half was a mighty struggle, as CSU hit just seven of 24 shots, while WU connected on 18 of 30 (60 percent) to pull away.

January 8 – MBB @ VMI – W, 88-80
Not only did the Bucs have to shake off a tough loss, but a quick turnaround from a late-night finish to a 1 p.m. tipoff, the earliest of the season, posted another obstacle for the Bucs. Not to mention a very solid and fast-paced VMI squad. CSU had a number of impressive performances, including two double-doubles (Kelvin Martin, 22-10, Kenny Mitchell 19-17), with Johathan Brooks narrowly missing a third one (nine points, 13 rebounds). CSU hit 24 of 28 free throw attempts that no doubt aided in the victory, shooting 43 percent from the field, limiting their three-point attempts (12) since they were finding easy looks inside. It was the first road win of the season for the Bucs and moved them back to a winning record (9-8, 3-2) for the year and in the Big South.

What’s coming up?
January 10 – WBB @ Coastal Carolina – 7 p.m.
January 13 – MBB vs. Presbyterian Coll. – 7:30 p.m.
January 15 – WBB vs. Presbyterian Coll. – 2 p.m.
January 15- MBB vs. Winthrop – 4:30 p.m.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Anicia Dotson - January 7, 2011

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

I was counting down for Christmas break for about two months. I couldn’t wait to get back home to my family and friends. We played against Mercer University in Macon, Ga., the day before we went home for Christmas. We got a great win on the road!!! I rode home with my BFF Abby Poole. I know she was a little upset because she could have been home 3 minutes earlier, but she had to make a stop and drop me off.(HaHa) Like always, Abby always catches me when I do something stupid. On our entertaining trip home, I fell asleep with my mouth wide open and almost broke my neck when my head fell off the back of my seat. Of course Abby had to laugh at me. When I got home I ran and jumped in my momma’s arms. I was so happy to see her! She is truly the greatest inspiration and role model in my life. My brother was only home from Florida for a few days, but it was great to see him. Christmas is such a fun holiday for my family and you can always expect lots of fun, games and laughter when we all get together. My family tends to grow in numbers from one Christmas to the next, which makes playing games even more fun! Over the break I was also excited to see my friends, all though I spent most of my time with my mother and little brother. I was able to see my high school team play and practice with them. On Christmas morning I woke up and cooked breakfast for everybody. After breakfast we went to my grandparents’ house to exchange gifts. I was blessed with many things that I need for school like money and new shoes. We had a family dinner at the church and played a really fun game called the Wrights Family Christmas. Later on that day I went to eat at IHOP with my best friend Maranda. On our return to Charleston, Abby and I drove through snow-so beautiful! Time really flew by at home and before I knew it, it was time to return to Charleston to be with my other family, the CSU Buccaneer basketball team. I really missed my CSU family and I couldn’t wait to see them! Happy New Year!

Weekly Recap - December 27, 2010 - January 2, 2011

Happy 2011 to all the Buccaneer fans out there. Hopefully you were able to rest during the holiday break and are ready for a great year of CSU athletics and honoring God in all that you do.

Jamarco Warren has been named the CSU athlete of the week after averaging 24 points per game in three contests this past week, including one on the road at Georgia.

The senior guard dropped 24 points in each of the three games leading the Bucs to a 2-1 record during that time, with two wins coming in Big South Conference play. It is his sixth 20-point game of the season and the 10th time in 15 games in which he has scored at least 10 points.

Also nominate: Kelsey Wasmer (Women’s Basketball)

December 28 – MBB @ Georgia – L, 70-55
Jamarco Warren led the charge with his 24 points, adding three assists, but a stagnant Buc offense show below 30 percent for the game and a 50 percent effort from the SEC opponent proved too much. Kelvin Martin had a team-high six nine rebounds for CSU. UGA jumped out to an 22-9 lead midway through the first half, and although the Bucs looked strong in the second period, couldn’t overcome the deficit.

December 31 – WBB vs. College of Charleston – W, 86-74
What a great way to end the year and the non-conference slate as the women’s basketball team took down the College of Charleston in front of a great home crowd on New Year’s Eve. Four Buccaneers scored in double figures for CSU, led by Kelsey Wasmer’s team-high 21 points adding seven rebounds. Lakeitha Also and Anicia Dotson added 18 and 11, respectively, inside for CSU while Kiki Rutledge had 16. The Bucs held a 45-34 lead at halftime, after shooting 46 percent and forcing 11 CofC turnovers.

December 31 – MBB vs. High Point – W, 77-69
The Big South home opener for CSU, the Bucs put three in double figures and caught fire in the second half to earn the first Big South victory over the year. CSU shot better than 50 percent in the second half, after holding a four-point halftime lead. Kelvin Martin earned a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Jamarco Warren scored 24, despite holding a 3-7 mark behind the 3-point line. The victory evened the team’s record overall (7-7) and in Big South play (1-1) and gave them a chance to get over .500 two days later against Radford.

January 2 – MBB vs. Radford – W, 73-58
The three starting guards for CSU combined to account for 49 of the team’s 73 points (64 percent), with all three scoring in double figures as CSU dominated the Highlanders to give the Bucs a winning record overall and in the Big South this year. It is the first time since 2002 that the Bucs have started 8-7, also doing so in 1996.

What’s coming up?
January 3 – WBB @ Gardner-Webb – 7 p.m.
January 6 – MBB @ Liberty – 7 p.m.
January 8 – MBB @ VMI – 1 p.m.
January 8 – WBB @ Winthrop – 4:30 p.m.
