Weekly Recap - September 20-26

There was plenty of good news around CSU this week, with Jordan Lancaster earning a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. It is a tremendous honor given to 11 players in all of FCS football. Fans can vote for Lancaster as the team’s captain by going to this link and selecting Lancaster. Also good news for CSU, soccer alumni Brittany Bolick was named the head soccer coach of Watauga High School, her alma mater. Finally, we would like to thank everyone for coming out to the CSU vs. Hawaii Football Watch Party. We had another great turnout for the game. Thanks to Jordan Pace and SGA for the giveaways, and thanks to Tom with Aramark for providing the drinks and food.

Jacobo Pastor is our CSU Athlete of the Week after posting a third place finish at the Sea Trails Collegiate Invitational. Pastor shot 211 for the tournament, five shots under par for his top finish of the fall.

Pastor was at or under par in all three rounds of the tournament, including a first round 68 on the par 72 course.

We also considered Emma Krantz (Soccer), Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Charles James (Football) and James Nunley (Football) for the honor.

September 21 – Soccer vs. S.C. State – W, 2-1
In its only game of the week, the soccer team took down South Carolina State, 2-1. Marky Boyce got back in the scoring column with her 10th goal of the season, while Emma Krantz scored her first goal of her young CSU career. The Bucs scored less than five minutes into the game, and led the entire way, giving up a late goal as SCSU forced the issue, pushing everyone forward in the waning minutes.

CSU earned its first conference win with a 3-0 sweep of Radford, doing so in dominant fashion, including a 25-16 victory in set one. Amanda Hill passed 1,600 kills for her career, earning her 10th double-double of the season. She is the 10th player in Big South history to achieve that number of kills. Also jumpstarting the team was the return of Chrissy Skokan, who saw action for the first time this season, earning five kills and four block assists as CSU held a 9-1 advantage in blocks.

Game Recap
Box Score

September 25 – Volleyball vs. High Point – L, 3-1
Amanda Hill posted another double-double and Amy Nokes did the same, missing the triple double by two kills (8 kills, 23 assists, 10 digs). CSU battled tough, but the taller and balanced Panthers attack put down 62 kills on the Bucs. Laura Grace Swindler added 12 assists. Despite a deceptive 25-19 score in favor of HPU, CSU hit .344 in the third set with 12 kills and just one error.

Toscano moved into second on the all-time passing list at CSU, while DeMarcus Moon finally got over that 1,000 yard mark, the seventh player in CSU history to do that.

Life is Goodenough - September 24

Freshmen 2010
(Class of 2014)

Once again we have been blessed with an incredible class of freshmen, Anicia Dotson, Margaret Spaulding, Kirklin Kirkpatrick and Erin Bratcher. Like most fall semesters, the fear and anxiety of the freshmen year causes homesickness and bouts of tears, but the great part of being a collegiate student-athlete is that you already have an inherent family on campus from the very beginning. Our affable upperclassmen have been very hospitable in welcoming our newcomers to the family.

With a swift introduction to college, we have overloaded our freshmen calendars with full class loads, even some night classes, early morning conditioning on the track and in the gym, strength training with Coach Tobi Jacobi, treatments with Tuesday Patterson, laundry duties, individual skill development with our staff, chapel, study hall, hosting recruits, etc. Their organizational skills and collective teamwork have enable them to handle all of their responsibilities so far.

After completing their fifth week of college(yea!), our freshmen class enlightened me on their perspective on “life as a freshmen basketball player” at Charleston Southern. The consensus was that CSU basically “rocks” especially the women’s basketball team. Anicia does miss her momma, while Kirklin misses her whole family and the family dog. Margaret misses face to face conversations with her family as well as her boyfriend. Erin actually spent the month of June with us so she has not been quite as homesick as the others but she does miss her high school friends and her family.

The freshmen acknowledged that time management has been the most difficult transition from high school to college. Staying organized with class assignments, team workouts, and meetings, while having to do laundry and run personal errands without the help of their parents, occupies most of their time. Taking an accelerated night class has been a new challenge for Kirklin and Margaret, however they agreed it has been a great investment since the class will be completed about the same time basketball practices begin. Though their free time is sparse, this group has enjoyed eating in historic downtown Charleston, shopping at the outlet mall, and hanging out at the beach.

Everyone has preconceived notions about beginning new chapters in their lives, especially something as monumental as starting college. Some of those thoughts have been dispelled since the freshmen became residents at CSU. Besides the pleasant surprise that the cafeteria food is really good, Anicia believes that her classes are much better than she anticipated. While Erin and Kirklin are really pleased with how well they are getting along as not only teammates, but also roommates, the personable and caring attitudes of the professors has been very appreciated by Margaret. The group all agreed that the upperclassman have made the adjustment to a new team very easy.

When asked about the best and the worst parts about college, the players commented on only two items that they deemed negative, which were study hall and missing loved ones. The extensive list of positives included awesome teammates, genuine Christian atmosphere on campus as well as in our locker room, beaches, challenging basketball workouts that make you feel good about the work you are investing, friendly professors, and a team that is all on the same page and focused on working together and winning together.

I love these ladies and am so excited to be their head coach and am anxious for our fans and the CSU community to embrace them and support them as they represent their families, CSU, and God on the court this season. GO BUCS!

Weekly Recap - September 13-19

The volleyball team got a nice road win at the Georgia Southern Tournament, while the football team beat Mars Hill to close out its three-game home stand. The men’s and women’s golf teams also began their fall seasons. WBB player Katie Tull did our first video recap of the season, and we look forward to that each week. Keep checking www.youtube.com/csusports for all of those videos, as well as others.

Gerald Stevenson has been named this weeks' CSU Athlete of the Week after posting a career-high 198 receiving yards and becoming the second-leading receiver in CSU school history.

Stevenson played a key role in Charleston Southern’s 28-14 win over Mars Hill Saturday.  He caught six passes for 198 yards -- tied for the fourth-most in a single-game in Big South history -- and averaged 33.0 yards per catch.  While he did not reach the end zone, Stevenson opened  the game with a 26-yard kickoff return that jump started a two-play, 69-yard scoring drive to put CSU up just 0:53 into the game.  On the first drive of the second quarter, the Bucs faced a 3rd-and-23, and Stevenson hauled in a jump ball for 26 yards and a first down.  Three plays later he added another 27-yard catch on a third down play that set up the Bucs’ second touchdown.  His third catch of the game was a 38-yarder on first down just before the half that put CSU in scoring position.  Stevenson had a 27-yard catch on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter that eventually led to a field goal attempt, and added a 42-yard reception on 3rd-and-18 in the fourth quarter that led to another touchdown.  He would add one more 38-yarder on the Bucs’ final scoring drive.  Stevenson finished the day with 246 all-purpose yards and kept alive three scoring drives with his four third down catches.

Also nominated were: A.J. Toscano (football), Amy Arroyo (Soccer), Amanda Hill (Volleyball.

September 12 -14 - Women’s Golf @ Cougar Classic – 21st
The Lady Buccaneer golf team started their fall with a loaded field, facing teams like Mississippi State, Miami, North Carolina and Penn State. With only two returners, nerves may have played a part as the team did not post the numbers they would have liked, but still fared well, shooting 966 for the tournament to finish 21st overall. Amanda D’Ostroph led the team with a 233 to tie for 77th overall.

Jacobo Pastor earned Big South Golfer of the Week honors for his performance, finishing seventh overall at -1 for the tournament, despite in his own words not playing all that well. Jonathan Rustin also posted a top-20 finish with rounds of 73, 71, 74.

Adrienne Cuff led the way, while Morgan Nieto posted a career-best on the 5k course at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Weekly Recap - September 6 - 12

Facing some tough competition this week, Charleston Southern did not necessarily come away with the number of victories that they hoped, but it was still a positive week with a number of student-athletes earning all-tournament honors at their respective tournaments.

Amanda Hill and Amy Nokes earned their second such honor this season, doing so at the UNF Tournament, while Marky Boyce, Caitlin Wesnesky and Amy Arroyo were named to the all-tournament squad at the Navy Tournament.

Caitlin Wesnesky has earned CSU Athlete of the Week honors this week after scoring the game-winner against Navy.

Wesnesky found the back of the net off her own rebound to score the game’s golden goal in the 106th minute against the Midshipmen, who were ranked in the top 10 in the regional poll. It was her third goal of the season and helped her garner all-tournament honors.

Also considered for the honor were: A.J. Toscano (Football), Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Chris Patrick (Football)

September 7 – Volleyball vs. UNC Wilmington – L, 3-2
The only midweek contest for any of the CSU teams, CSU dominated the match, but came up short on the final scoreboard as the Seahawks used two extra-point sets to win. The Lady Bucs posted dominant 25-18 and 25-14 victories in sets one and three, but eventually dropped sets four (27-25) and five (15-11) to suffer their first home loss of the year. Amanda Hill had a career-best 29 kills with 12 digs and three aces, posting the most kills in a match since Jennifer Monson had 44 on Oct. 10, 2001.

Kayla Klinger had a career-best 12 kills in the same game against UIC. Looking to salvage the tournament after a tough day one, CSU had a tough task in the hosting UNF Ospreys and the SoCon opponent Chattanooga. They proved up to the challenge though, posting a 2-0 record on day two as Hill and Nokes each earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Weekly Recap - August 30 - September 5

What a great week to be a Buccaneer! So many great things happening around campus this past week as we entered into September. Volleyball beat The Citadel, football beat North Greenville and the cross country teams proved that their high hopes for this season were with good reason.

Tricia Rodl has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week after becoming just the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 digs for her career.

Rodl posted a career-best 29 digs against The Citadel on Tuesday, pushing her over the mark. The 29 digs was by far her best performance this season, almost tripling her total from the match before.

August 31 – Volleyball vs. The Citadel – W, 3-2
Their only game this week, the volleyball team played The Citadel at home in front of a great crowd. After easily winning the first two sets, the Lady Bucs looked like they would cruise to the sweep, but out of the intermission, the Bulldogs came back and won two straight sets to tie the match. The crowd took over during the deciding fifth set, yelling and cheering the team on to the victory. Amanda Hill passed the 1,400 kills mark in the match, while Tricia Rodl eclipsed the 1,000 dig mark, with Rodl posting a career-high 29 digs in the match to do so.

September 4 – Cross Country @ Eye Opener Invitational
Two returners raced on Saturday, each running almost the exact time that they did last year at the same event. The difference was everyone else that led CSU to an 8th place finish. Adrienne Cuff again led the way with a 28th place finish. Susanna McKee ran an almost identical time as she did the previous year, but instead of finishing second on the team, was sixth. Hannah Burkholder, Mary Davidson, Heidi Dean and Morgan Nieto have all come in to their first season at CSU and immediately improved the program to where they feel they can compete in every meet.

The men’s team didn’t worry as much about competing as they did working together as a team. Andrew King still led the crew, but spent most of the time pacing Matt Smith, who finished second on the team. Brandon Harris also ran very well to finish third on the team. The men’s team finished 12th out of 21 teams.
