Weekly Recap - November 22-28

Hope everyone had a great break and a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family. While you were away eating turkey, our men’s and women’s basketball teams were hard at work in the Midwest at their respective tournaments.

Kelvin Martin is the first men’s basketball player to earn CSU Athlete of the Week honors for 2010-11, following his performance in the Chicago Invitational Tournament and his all-tournament team selection.

Martin nearly averaged a double-double in three games against Southern Illinois, Austin Peay and Southern. He had 15 points in the Bucs’ 89-54 victory over Southern, and nine points apiece against the other two schools. He had a season-best 14 rebounds against Southern Illinois and added four assists, one block and five steals for the tournament. He shot at a .765 clip for the tournament and had 28 rebounds in three games.

Also Nominated: Kelsey Wasmer (Women’s Basketball)

November 22 – Women’s Basketball vs. UNC Greensboro – W, 77-67
Before heading to Texas for a tournament, the women’s basketball team took down a solid UNC Greensboro team at home. Katie Tull moved to the top of the career record books for threes made, while four Buccaneers had a double-digit scoring performance. Kelsey Wasmer had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Hellen Terry had 13 points, and Lakeitha Alston had 12 points.

November 23 – Men’s Basketball @ Southern Illinois – L, 85-67
We mentioned the Richmond game last week, and the men’s basketball team continued to compete in the Chicago Invitational on the road against a perennial NCAA tournament qualifier in Southern Illinois. CSU shot better than 46 percent in the second half, but couldn’t slow down the Salukis, who shot almost 60 percent from the field for the game. Kenny Mitchell had a double-digit scoring night with 15, while Jeremy Sexton was the lone Buccaneer with multiple three-point makes.

November 26 – Men’s Basketball vs. Austin Peay – L, 70-64
An oddly formatted tournament meant that CSU finally went to the Windy City for the third and fourth games of the Chicago Invitational, after traveling to Richmond and Southern Illinois in the first two games. Facing Austin Peay, the Bucs again struggled defensively, giving up 70 points, 24 to Anthony Campbell, and allowing the Governers to shoot better than 50 percent. Jamarco Warren had 18 points for CSU, while Jeremy Sexton had 14, the only two Bucs in double figures.

November 26 – Women’s Basketball @ Texas Tech – L, 82-57
The first game of the World Vision Classic, the Bucs had to face the home-standing Texas Tech Red Raiders of the Big 12. The inside game of Tech proved too much as they outscored CSU 28-10 in the pain in the first half, shooting at a 63 percent clip. Even so, it was a seven point game (48-41) with 15:55 left in the game before the depth of Tech took over as they steadily pulled away to stay 5-0 on the season.

November 27 – Men’s Basketball vs. Southern – W, 89-54
CSU moved to 3-4 on the season with an easy victory over Southern. Four Buccaneers scored at least 12 points, while 10 CSU players had at least one bucket in the game. The Bucs showed their depth playing a total of 14 players in the contest. Kelvin Martin and Kenny Mitchell narrowly missed double-doubles with 15-9 and 15-7 performances, respectively. The victory ended a long road trip that began last Sunday with a game against Richmond.

November 27 – Women’s Basketball vs. Sam Houston State – L, 76-70
The second of three-straight days with a contest, the Bucs hung with Sam Houston State, and had three players (Lakeitha Alston, Lydia Johnson, Helen Terry) record a double-double, while Kelsey Wasmer also had a double-figure scoring effort, but Britni Martin’s 37 points proved too much. The starting five for CSU each played at least 27 minutes of the contest, with Johnson, Wasmer and Tull each playing 34 minutes or more.

November 28 – Women’s Basketball vs. American – L, 60-49
The legs finally caught up to CSU as they shot just 27 percent from the field and only Kelsey Wasmer scored more than 10 points with 18. Wasmer earned all-tournament team honors for her performances in the tournament. It was an early run that really did in CSU as they went 0-7 as American went on a 17-0 run early in the game.

What’s Coming Up?
November 30 – Men’s Basketball vs. Toccoa Falls – 7:30 p.m.
December 1 – Women’s Basketball @ South Carolina – 11 a.m.

December 4 – Men’s Basketball @ Coastal Carolina – 2 p.m.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Shay Jones - November 23, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey BUC FANS,

This has been a GREAT WEEK for us after winning our game against Voorhees College on Tuesday. Having four days of intense practices got us ready for UNC Greensboro yesterday. They could not handle our Lady Buc swagg on the court so they took a L 77-67. When we played them last year it came right down to the wire, but this year having so much improvement and leadership we beat them by 10! Last night’s game has had to be the best game we have ever played!!!!! Taking 5 CHARGES and just getting after it on the defensive end. This win will certainly help us get ready for Texas trip over Thanksgiving. We leave Thanksgiving morning at 4:40AM and I'm so excited because I have never flown before, and what a great way to fly for the first time with my teammates. We play 3 games back to back, but that’s no biggie cause we are never scared. Speaking of Thanksgiving, on Sunday we delivered turkeys & other traditional Thanksgiving food to families. I love when we do this! It is so much fun seeing the families faces when receiving the turkeys and the boxes. I see that even having pet ducks is possible after visiting that neighborhood. I really really want a pet duck; hopefully LAKEITHA will get me one for Christmas since she is such a nice teammate..........But stay tuned for more because season is just getting started and this team is UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Weekly Recap - November 15 - 21

Volleyball made a run through the tournament but their season came to an end, as did the football season, officially marking the end of the fall schedule. Now we focus on basketball before we take a break for Thanksgiving!

Katie Tull has earned CSU Athlete of the Week honors after breaking a school record, and reaching a career-mileston in the team’s 96-63 victory early in the week.

Tull connected on a school-record nine three pointers, one shy of the Big South’s single game record, and scored career-high-tying 27 points to lead CSU. Her points also pushed her past the 1,000 point mark for her career. She is the 12th player in CSU history to score at least 1,000 points, and will quickly move up the ranks in her senior season.

Also Nominated: Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Sheldon Strickland (Men’s Basketball)

November 16 - Women’s Basketball vs. Voorhees – W, 96-63
Katie Tull had her 27 points, while Helen Terry added a career high 23 points and had six steals as CSU ran away from Voorhees, 96-36. So far this year at home, CSU is averaging more than 94 points per game, including an 87-57 victory in an exhibition game.

November 16 – Men’s Basketball vs. The Citadel – W, 68-61
It was a packed house as CSU took on cross-town rival Citadel, and the Bucs came out victorious. It took a late rally, outscoring the Bulldogs 8-1 over the final two and a half minutes of play, but the Bucs won consecutive games over the Citadel.

November 18 – Volleyball vs. Asheville – W, 3-0
For the second year in a row, the Bucs entered the tournament as a six seed, and for the second year in a row, the Bucs pulled the 6-3 upset, taking out Asheville 3-0 in the first round. It was one of the most dominant games of the year for CSU posted the first sweep of a three seed in tournament history. It was the first time since 89-90 that CSU has advanced to the semifinals in consecutive years, holding Asheville to .073 hitting after blocking the Bulldog attack 10 times.

November 18 – Men’s Basketball vs. Montreat – W, 103-85
Even at 18 points, the final score is not reflective of the domination by the men’s team over Montreat. Jamarco Warren led the team in scoring with 29 points, 22 of which came before half time, but Sheldon Strickland posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 assists. CSU 61-38 at halftime and cruised to the victory at home.

November 19 – Volleyball vs. High Point – L, 3-1
A point away from taking a 2-0 lead in the second set, which looked like it would propel CSU to the finals, High Point found a way to overcome CSU in the set, winning 26-24 and went on to finish off CSU 3-1 in the Big South Semifinals. The Panthers ended up winning the championship the next day with a victory over Liberty. Most importantly for CSU, the loss means the end of the CSU career of Amanda Hill, Cori Holeman, Trisha Rodl, Amberle Trinder and Emily Libertowski, a senior class that has meant the world to this school and this program, and they will be missed on and off the court!

November 20 – Football @ Coastal Carolina – L, 70-3
I don’t know how many times I’ve been ask “What happened?!?” when telling the score of the final game of the season. Coastal Carolina knew they had to shut down the CSU offense in order to have a chance at earning the Big South’s automatic bid. Surrendering just 3 points ended up doing the trick as the Chanticleers earned the bid based on a three-team tiebreaker. For CSU, the end of a disappointing season was in sight and the Bucs could not get anything going offensively or defensively, struggling mightily on the road.

November 21 – Men’s Basketball @ Richmond (Chicago Tourn.) – L, 82-71
Richmond shot 70 percent in the first half and 64 percent from the game, but somehow CSU managed to stay in the game, making a late run on the road against a very good Richmond team. Jamarco Warren scored 21 points, while Jeremy Sexton added 17 and Sheldon Strickland scored 12 to lead CSU, but four players in double digits and two more with eight for Richmond put the Spiders on top. The game was the first of the Chicago Invitational Tournament. CSU will now play at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, before going to Chicago for the final two games against Austin Peay and either Southern or Oakland.

What’s Coming Up?
November 22 – WBB vs. UNC Greensboro – 7 p.m.
November 23 – MBB @ Southern Illinois (Chicago Tourn.)– 8:05 p.m.
November 26 – MBB vs. Austin Peay (Chicago Tourn.)– 1 p.m.
November 26 – WBB @ Texas Tech (World Vision Classic) – 6 p.m.
November 27 – MBB vs. Oakland/Southern (Chicago Tourn.)
November 27 – WBB vs. Sam Houston State (World Vision Classic) – 8 p.m.
November 28 – WBB vs. American (World Vision Classic) - Noon

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Kiki Rutledge - November 17, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What’s up Buccaneer Peeps! How’s everything going out there? I hope well, this past week we started our official games. Man, I can’t tell you how happy I am to step back on the court! We started off with Erskine College on Saturday and went to sleep with a victory under our belts, 101-54. That was the highest scoring game since 2002; we are already starting to make history. On Sunday, we played Clemson University, but fell to them by 33 points. A good thing about the visit to Clemson is my family got to finally see my play for the first time since my freshman year. I was out all last season with an acl injury. The loss to Clemson opened our eyes to the things we need to do a lot better. We worked hard to fix those things in Monday’s practice in order to grab another win on Tuesday against Voorhees College 96-63. It is a lot of work having three games in four days, but also a lot of fun going out to battle with one of the best teams I have ever played on. Playing three games in four days forces us to become physically and mentally tough, which together makes us stronger than our opponents. It will be a huge help for our team when we travel to Lubbock, Texas next week for a Thanksgiving tournament when we play Texas Tech, Sam Houston State, and American on back-to-back-to-back days. I have already seen an improvement in our team within the past week and I am excited to see what conference play has in store for us. Well, that’s all I have for now fans. Come support us and get Buc Wild!!!!!

Weekly Recap - November 8 - 14

The end of the fall sports is on the horizon and basketball is just gearing up, making this a great time to be a Buccaneer!

Amanda Hill has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week after breaking a pair of CSU records during two games this week.

Hill capped a sensational regular season with a 25-kill performance Saturday vs. Presbyterian, giving her 534 kills in 2010. Friday vs. Gardner-Webb, Hill posted her 19th double-double of the season, with 12 kills and 19 digs in the Lady Bucs sweep of the Runnin’ Bulldogs. She also added three aces and four blocks on the weekend, and posted three kills during a 5-0 run to open up a 17-8 lead during a 25-11 set two win vs. GWU.

Also Nominated: Lakeitha Alston (Women’s Basketball), Johathan Brooks (Men’s Basketball), Malcom Dixon (Football)

November 12 – Volleyball vs. Gardner-Webb – W, 3-1
Amanda Hill broke the single-season and career matches played records on Friday night in a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb. Kayla Klinger and Hill both posted double-doubles with Klinger getting the upper hand in kills with 14. Amberle Trinder had six blocks, while Erin LaVenice registered a season-high five kills and also had three blocks.

November 12 – Men’s Basketball @ Georgia Tech – L, 52-39
The defense did its job, holding ACC foe Georgia Tech to just 52 points and held them to just 28 percent shooting on the night, but CSU turned the ball over 29 times and made just seven of 12 free throws in the second half. Freshman Johathan Brooks led the charge for CSU with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bucs led as much as 42-24, but 15 points in the fourth quarter by Presbyterian College made some of the 18 seniors sweat in their final home game of the season. A total of 21 members of the football program (18 seniors, 3 senior student assistants) were honored before the game in which CSU ended a six-game losing streak this year. November 13 – Volleyball vs. Presbyterian – L, 3-1
The pressure of senior day may have been too much for the volleyball team as they also honored a large group (5) of seniors before the game as they tried to make it 2-0 against PC for the Bucs on Saturday. CSU earned a victory in set two, tying the match, but could not get over the hump in the final two sets. They will enter the 2010 Big South Championship as the sixth seed, facing Asheville in the first round.

November 13 – Women’s Basketball vs. Erskine – W, 101-54
It was never really a contest, despite not shooting well in the first half. The Bucs used a 15-2 first-half run and cruised to a season-opening victory at home, finishing off a busy day of CSU athletics. Kelsey Wasmer had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Katie Tull added 12 points. Lakeitha Alson stole the show, scoring a career-high 27 points, dominating the paint for CSU.

November 13 – Women’s Basketball @ Clemson – L, 85-52
A quick turnaround after a late night, CSU had to try to take on Clemson with barely 12 hours of rest. Kelsey Wasmer had 15 points, but CSU could not get the three pointers to drop, shooting just 10 percent from behind the arc as tired legs seemingly prevailed.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Lakeitha Alston - November 9, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Ahhhhh! November, November, oh how I love thee! The air is filled with basketball and turkeys. No wasted time to get this season started, November 6th is when we departed. Haha! I’m the next Shakespeare :). This past week was the beginning of something special. First off, we made the official Lady Buc Swag video, check it out on MTV;). Then I guess you can say we roasted some meat on Saturday against Montreat. The game went very well. Our freshmen played a vital role in our victory. Some of us were MVPs and some of us *cough cough me* we a little foul happy. But HEY, it happens haha. This Saturday we’re getting ready to give Erskine the business too! We’re soooo pumped about getting into the swing of things. After the game, the one and only Mrs. Jessie Evans arranged a cookout for the team and coaches. We greatly appreciate her and her motives. That was far too kind of her to do such a thing for us. Her cooking was impeccable. The chili was amazing and the oysters we’re delicious also quite eventful. Most people on the team had never eaten oysters so there was a lot of taste testing going on. Erin, being one of the ones that had never eaten them before, stole practically every oyster I opened! Good thing I’m a nice teammate :) Coach Newland seemed to enjoy the oysters a little too much. He created a triple-decker saltine cracker sandwich! He went a little crazy Hahaha! The oysters were also very dangerous. Kelsey and I sliced our hands and fingers up while trying to open them!! :( We’re okay though, I know you all cared if we were or not. Anywayyyyy, the past week went well and we’re going to keep it going by improving in practice and getting more W’s. Watch out Big South, it’s our year! GET BIG…MP….BRING IT!

Lakeitha Alston #24

Weekly Recap - November 1 - 8

The football team had a good showing against Kentucky, the volleyball team swept Coastal Carolina, men’s golf had a solid finish in its home tournament and the women’s basketball team got a big victory in their first game of the season, albeit an exhibition game.

Senior Cori Holeman has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after posting a combined 19 kills and 12 blocks in two games this week, including 11 kills in the team’s sweep over Coastal Carolina. Holeman also posted seven combined blocks, with three solo rejections in that game.

Holeman set the school record for block assists last year with 122 and has 95 block assists in 2010. After her 11-7 game against CCU, Holeman posted eight kills on just 18 attacks against UNC Asheville, adding five blocks against the Bulldogs in a four-set loss by the Bucs.

Will Pieper, Amanda Hill, Kelsey Wasmer, Malcom Dixon and Chris Kuzdale were also nominated for the honor.

November 1-2 – Men’s Golf – Kiawah Island Intercollegiate – 6th
Jacobo Pastor shot his best round of the tournament, a 75, in the final round of the tournament, finishing 16th overall and helping the Bucs to a sixth place finish, four shots ahead of South Carolina. The tournament, hosted by CSU, had teams like the Gamecocks, Western Kentucky and tournament champion Indiana.

November 2 – Volleyball vs. Coastal Carolina – 3-0
The Charleston Southern volleyball team downed rival Coastal Carolina in straight sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-11), earning CSU’s first sweep of Coastal since 1993. Tuesday served as the Lady Bucs second win in the last three meetings with the Chanticleers following a 21-match CCU winning streak in the series. CSU turned the tables on the Chanticleers, as Coastal had previously swept the Lady Bucs in the conference opener Sept. 21 at Kimbel Arena. On Tuesday, CSU owned the net, hitting .305 as a team while holding Coastal to a .057 attack percentage. The Lady Bucs posted 10 blocks and seven service aces on the evening, with six players serving up at least one ace. CSU out-hit CCU, 37-28, in the kills department, and earned 42 digs to the Chanticleers 25.

November 5 – Soccer vs. High Point (Big South Tournament) – L, 1-0
The two teams played even until the 83rd minute when Sara Rager found the back of the net, downing CSU 1-0 and eliminating them from the Big South Championship. High Point, the number 5 seed in the tournament, went on to win its second consecutive championship, while CSU ended the season with 12 wins, tying the school mark for wins in a season for the second year in a row.

November 6 – Football @ Kentucky – L, 49-21
Late in the second quarter, the crowd of more than 61,000 at Commonwealth Stadium was silent as they feared the upset from CSU with the Bucs scoring to tie the game at 14-14. Too many big plays from Randall Cobb and the UK offense came in the second half as the Wildcats pulled away in the second half. Chris Kuzdale had an interception and a fumble recovery, his first in either category this season. The person who stole the attention of the crowd, and the media though, was CSU freshman Malcom Dixon, who came in on the first series to take his first snaps at quarterback this year. Dixon completed 7-8 passes and ran 19 times for 96 yards.

November 6 – Volleyball @ Asheville- L, 3-1
CSU played the Bulldogs close, with 32 ties and 13 lead changes in the match, but eventually fell 3-1 in the final road game of the season. For the first time since 2009, Amanda Hill, Amy Nokes and Kayla Klinger each posted double-doubles in the match, as once again the team is stepping up late in the season.

November 6 – Women’s Basketball vs. Montreat – W, 87-57
CSU got the performance they were looking for from senior Kelsey Wasmer as she led the way with 24 points in just 26 minutes of action as CSU saw its first live action of the season. Even though the victory won’t help the final record, there was plenty of positives to take from the game as Kiki Rutledge bounced back from last year’s injury to score 14 points on a 6-9 shooting night at the point guard position. A lot of freshmen also got good playing time, with 11 players seeing at least nine minutes of action in the game.

What’s Coming Up?
November 12 – Volleyball vs. Gardner-Webb – 7 p.m.
November 12 – Men’s Basketball @ Georgia Tech – 7:30 p.m.
November 13 – Cross Country @ NCAA East Region

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Danielle Gibson - November 3, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey Buc Fans!

What’s that I smell in the air? Basketball season! We officially start the season this Saturday, November 6th at 2 p.m. in the Buc Dome! I am so excited that the season is finally here. This past Saturday we got to scrimmage another team. It felt so good to finally play against somebody other each other. Even though it was a closed scrimmage and our fans were not there, we still approached the game like it was the real thing. This scrimmage helped us out a lot by getting us back to "game speed." Even though we practice "game speed" every practice, it always seems a little faster when the game actually starts. Not only did the scrimmage help us get back to "game speed," but it also allowed me and my teammates to mess up (Yes! I said mess up!) This is perfectly fine that we messed up because it gave us an opportunity to make all of our mistakes now so we can fix them and not let them cost us games in the long run. For the most part, our scrimmage went very well and our freshman also stepped up to the plate. I was very happy and after the scrimmage, we got to enjoy our victory with good old East Bay Deli (a restaurant that sells good subs.)

Because our scrimmage was at 2, this allowed me to go back and try to enjoy what little bit of a Saturday I still had left, and what greater way to do that other than the Fair! Charleston’s Fair is huge and not that far down the street from CSU. With all this being said, I grabbed a group of my closest friends, got dressed, and we went to the fair. I had a blast riding rides, playing games, and taking pictures. Not only that, but I must confess, I ate some great Fair food including funnel cakes and some other not so good food, and I LOVED EVERY MOMENT of it! It was a great way to end such a beautiful day. This has to be one of my favorite times of the year because the weather is starting to cool down, basketball season starts, and the smell of funnel cakes fall under my nose.
I always say that there is not enough days in a weekend because they go by so quick and before I know it, my weekend was gone. It's back to hard work for a couple more days before being able to relax for what seems like a split second. A test here and there, basketball practice and film, and practicing for my skit I have to perform later on in the week (I love acting class.) Busy week ahead of me, but that's ok because my busiest day is out the way (Monday) and Tuesday is an off day. Time to relax, wash clothes, and catch up on things. Before I know it, tip off will be here and the start to a great season will have begun. As I like to say GET BIG! It's all about Mission Possible.

Weekly Recap - October 25 - 31

Hard to believe it is already November and we have basketball on the calendar for this week as the Lady Buccaneer basketball team takes on Montreat in an exhibition game next Saturday. Before we get to far into that, we want to make sure that the women’s soccer team gets the recognition they deserve for their regular season finish. The Lady Bucs finished with a 12-6-1 overall finish and a 6-2-1 mark in the Big South, tying the program record for wins in a season, but most importantly, tied for the Big South regular season championship! They will be the #4 seed in the upcoming tournament after coming up short on the tiebreakers, and face High Point in game one of the 2010 Championship. Congratulations to Coach Eric Terrill and the women’s soccer team, everyone at CSU is so proud of you!

Casey Bolduc has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week after scoring her first-career goal in the women’s soccer victory over Gardner-Webb. The game helped CSU clinch a share of the regular season Big South Championship.

The junior defender from Spartanburg picked an opportune time to get her first scoring tally as it went down as the game-winner in the Lady Bucs’ final regular season game.

Gerald Stevenson, Marky Boyce, Amanda Hill, Kayla Klinger and Adrienne Cuff were also considered for the honor.

Unfortunately this has to be a short weekly recap so that our staff can head down to Kiawah Island for the men’s golf tournament. If you get a chance, you should come down and support the Bucs, it should be a tremendous tournament.

October 25-26 – W. Golf @ Palmetto Intercollegiate – 15th
Freshman Torey Johnson led the way for CSU for the second time this season, finishing 11th overall as the Lady Bucs claimed 15th at the 2010 Palmetto Intercollegiate. CSU shot a three-round total of 939, including rounds of 307 and 308 to start the tournament before struggling in round three.

October 26 – Volleyball vs. C of C – L, 3-0
The Lady Bucs may have lost the game to the College of Charleston, but serving as the “Dig for the Cure” game, I would say everyone won with more than 500 people in attendance at the game which was scheduled to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

October 27 – Soccer @ Winthrop – L, 1-0
CSU struggled to find the offense on the road as they suffered a road loss to Winthrop, who tied CSU for first in the league, and ended up with the number 1 seed entering Thursday’s Big South Championship.

October 29 – Soccer @ Gardner-Webb, W, 3-1
Knowing they needed a victory to stay in the hunt for a championship, the offense came up big thanks to a couple of assists by Marky Boyce, who is among the nation’s leaders in goals scored this season. Michelle Dennis, Casey Bolduc and Toni Lashley each scored a goal in the victory, which tied the school record for wins in a season.

October 29 – Volleyball vs. Liberty – L, 3-2
CSU game the top-ranked Flames all they could handle in an attempt to deliver the second Big South loss of the season to Liberty. The Flame’s balanced attack, including five players with double digit kills, prevailed for the road team. Even so, Coach Bellush and the team proved they are as good as anyone in the Big South and will try to use that as they get ready for the Big South Championship in a couple of weeks.

October 30 – Cross Country @ Big South Championship – M-8th, W-8th
Neither team posted the finish they would have liked, but our first championship of the 2010-11 season is complete. The women’s team improved to eighth overall after finishing last in 2009, and with all freshmen and sophomores in the lineup, there is no doubt a bright future for the program. The men also finished eighth, having lost one of the top runners to injury before the season, and a number of other guys battling injuries and illnesses during the year.

October 30 – Football @ Stony Brook – L, 41-21
Too many big plays kept the Seawolves undefeated in Big South play, using 13 plays of 20 yards or more to do in the Bucs. Gerald Stevenson hit a couple more marks in the record books, while DeMarcus Moon rushed for a couple of touchdowns. Andrew Trudnowski finally played like we knew he could, completing 73 percent of his passes (22-30) including a touchdown and no interceptions.
