Volleyball made a run through the tournament but their season came to an end, as did the football season, officially marking the end of the fall schedule. Now we focus on basketball before we take a break for Thanksgiving!
Tull connected on a school-record nine three pointers, one shy of the Big South’s single game record, and scored career-high-tying 27 points to lead CSU. Her points also pushed her past the 1,000 point mark for her career. She is the 12th player in CSU history to score at least 1,000 points, and will quickly move up the ranks in her senior season.
Also Nominated: Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Sheldon Strickland (Men’s Basketball)
November 16 - Women’s Basketball vs. Voorhees – W, 96-63
Katie Tull had her 27 points, while Helen Terry added a career high 23 points and had six steals as CSU ran away from Voorhees, 96-36. So far this year at home, CSU is averaging more than 94 points per game, including an 87-57 victory in an exhibition game.
November 16 – Men’s Basketball vs. The Citadel – W, 68-61
It was a packed house as CSU took on cross-town rival Citadel, and the Bucs came out victorious. It took a late rally, outscoring the Bulldogs 8-1 over the final two and a half minutes of play, but the Bucs won consecutive games over the Citadel.
November 18 – Volleyball vs. Asheville – W, 3-0
For the second year in a row, the Bucs entered the tournament as a six seed, and for the second year in a row, the Bucs pulled the 6-3 upset, taking out Asheville 3-0 in the first round. It was one of the most dominant games of the year for CSU posted the first sweep of a three seed in tournament history. It was the first time since 89-90 that CSU has advanced to the semifinals in consecutive years, holding Asheville to .073 hitting after blocking the Bulldog attack 10 times.
November 18 – Men’s Basketball vs. Montreat – W, 103-85
Even at 18 points, the final score is not reflective of the domination by the men’s team over Montreat. Jamarco Warren led the team in scoring with 29 points, 22 of which came before half time, but Sheldon Strickland posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 assists. CSU 61-38 at halftime and cruised to the victory at home.
November 19 – Volleyball vs. High Point – L, 3-1
A point away from taking a 2-0 lead in the second set, which looked like it would propel CSU to the finals, High Point found a way to overcome CSU in the set, winning 26-24 and went on to finish off CSU 3-1 in the Big South Semifinals. The Panthers ended up winning the championship the next day with a victory over Liberty. Most importantly for CSU, the loss means the end of the CSU career of Amanda Hill, Cori Holeman, Trisha Rodl, Amberle Trinder and Emily Libertowski, a senior class that has meant the world to this school and this program, and they will be missed on and off the court!
November 20 – Football @ Coastal Carolina – L, 70-3
I don’t know how many times I’ve been ask “What happened?!?” when telling the score of the final game of the season. Coastal Carolina knew they had to shut down the CSU offense in order to have a chance at earning the Big South’s automatic bid. Surrendering just 3 points ended up doing the trick as the Chanticleers earned the bid based on a three-team tiebreaker. For CSU, the end of a disappointing season was in sight and the Bucs could not get anything going offensively or defensively, struggling mightily on the road.
November 21 – Men’s Basketball @ Richmond (Chicago Tourn.) – L, 82-71
Richmond shot 70 percent in the first half and 64 percent from the game, but somehow CSU managed to stay in the game, making a late run on the road against a very good Richmond team. Jamarco Warren scored 21 points, while Jeremy Sexton added 17 and Sheldon Strickland scored 12 to lead CSU, but four players in double digits and two more with eight for Richmond put the Spiders on top. The game was the first of the Chicago Invitational Tournament. CSU will now play at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, before going to Chicago for the final two games against Austin Peay and either Southern or Oakland.
