If you have been following us on Twitter or Facebook recently, you’ve heard about the streak and probably know that it came to an end this weekend. Even so, the Bucs were one of the last four standing in which neither the men’s nor the women’s team had lost a game on their home court this season. We have a great home court advantage here at CSU, and it is thanks to fans like you. We want to encourage you to continue to come out and support both basketball teams as we get down the stretch. Both teams are tied for fourth in the Big South right now and need you to come out and be loud as they try to finish strong. Also, we are in the second week of February, which means that the softball season starts this week, and baseball is just another week away. Good luck to both of those teams as they begin their quests toward the Big South Championship.
Allen took on a field of nearly 50 competitors at the New Balance Invitational and won the college division with a jump of 7.54m. The mark bested Anthony Reed’s record of 7.36m, which he had held since 1999.
Also Nominated - Katie Tull (Women’s Basketball), Johathan Brooks (Men’s Basketball), Heidi Dean (Women’s Track and Field), Jacobo Pastor (M. Golf)
January 31 – WBB vs. High Point – W, 80-72
The “Texas Twosome” as I like to call them (Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer) led the way, scoring a combined 52 points (26 each) out of the team’s 80, leading CSU past High Point at home. Wasmer played all 40 minutes of the game and had a double-double with 12 rebounds and four assists, while Tull played 36 minutes, draining six threes, including five in the first half. Danielle Gibson provided a much-needed boost with nine points, five of which came at the free throw line. Trailing by seven at halftime, the Bucs kicked it into high gear in half number two, shooting 58 percent from the field.
January 31-February 1 – M. Golf @ Jacksonville Invitational – 11th
Jacobo Pastor had four birdies in the final round, helping the Bucs to an 11th-place finishon the history TPC Sawgrass course in Jacksonville. Jonathan Rustin, David Denlinger, Brandon Caddow-Young and Will Pieper also shot well, as the Bucs beat out the hosting Jacksonville team, as well as Georgia State, James Madison and Old Dominion.
February 3 – MBB vs. VMI – W, 101-90
The game proved everything we thought it would be; fast-paced, high-scoring and close. That’s the way VMI plays, and CSU took advantage of the athleticism, scoring 100 points for the first time in Big South play and the fourth time this year. The Bucs shot 62.9 percent from the field for the game, including an unbelievable 71.9 percent in the first half as they out-scored VMI 55-48 in the first frame. A 10-12 mark from the free throw line in the second half helped CSU hold off the Keydets as six Bucs scored in double figures, including all of the starting five, and Sheldon Strickland off the bench.
February 4-5 – M. Track @ New Balance Invitational
The 4x200m relay team defended its title, edging out a professional team for the championship. The Bucs also got a record-breaking performance out of Lavon Allen, who shattered the old mark held by Anthony Reed since 1999, winning the competition in New York.
February 4-5 – W. Track @ ETSU Niswonger Invitational
Brittney Greer and Heidi Dean ran personal bests this weekend, as the Lady Bucs competed in one of the largest meets they will see in the indoor season. Again the weight throw seemed to be the best event for CSU as they put three of four competitors in the top-20, and all four in the top-25. Tamisha Foster also ran a season-best in the triple jump to finish fifth.
February 5 – WBB vs. Gardner-Webb – L, 71-64
Gardner-Webb got on a roll in the second half, knocking down everything they put up, and finished the half shooting better than 53 percent as GWU handed the Bucs their first home loss of the season. Undersized once again, the inside presence for the Bucs held strong, holding the top-four forwards for GWU to 19 points, getting 17 points out of Lakeitha Alston alone, but the Bulldogs just had too many weapons and hit key free throws down the stretch, becoming almost automatic in the second half (10-11).
February 5 – MBB vs. Liberty, L, 70-69
Jamarco Warren launched a half-court shot at the buzzer that hit the front of the rim as the Bucs’ hope of knocking off the second-ranked team in the conference also fell just short. Again all five starters for the Bucs scored in double figures with Johathan Brooks earning the double-double (14 points, 10 reb.) but the Bucs were out-scored 42-30 in the second half. Even so, that gap was made up less than eight minutes into the second half, when the game was tied at 49-49. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points.
