This week, CSU started the basketball season, competed against the best in the country, had a tough five-set volleyball match against the top team in the Big South, and had a thrilling overtime football victory over a team that was undefeated in the Big South.
All of that in two days, too!
We will also be launching a live chat for Saturday’s football game. If we get a good response, we will be including it for more sports and additional games. Make sure you check csusports.com for more details or to get involved in the conversation.
With an outstanding 3-for-4 performance Saturday, John Paglia has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week. All four field goal attempts came from beyond 40 yards, including a 51-yard make that set a new school record. Paglia was also 3-for-3 on PAT attempts, and averaged better than 67 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks.
He was named the Big South Special Team’s player of the week for his efforts, that included a 43-yard game-winning field goal in overtime. His three field goals came from 51, 46 and 43 yards.
We also considered Chris Kuzdale and Katie Tull for the honor.

Special teams and turnovers led the way as Charleston Southern won their third-straight Big South game taking down Stony Brook, who was tied for the lead in the Big South, 30-27 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. The game had three ties, including a 27-27 knot at the end of regulation, but CSU never trailed after taking an early 7-0 lead.
Chris Kuzdale tied the school record with two interceptions in the game, becoming the ninth player in school history to have more than one pick in a game. The second interception came on the first play of the overtime period, leaving the Bucs needing only a field goal to win the game, which they got from John Paglia. Both players (Kuzdale and Paglia) earned Big South recognition for their performances.
