Buccaneer BasketBlog - Lydia Johnson - October 26, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey Buc Fans!

If I must say so, fall is by far the best time of the year. Here in Charleston that weather is starting to cool down, football season is well under way, and basketball games are coming up fast!

So far basketball practice has been tough. Coach Goodenough has been teaching us new plays (well, they are new to the freshmen) and new defensive sets. She has been challenging us all mentally and physically for our scrimmage this Saturday and for the season ahead. I have been very impressed by the all of the freshmen’s ability to pick up on new things and run with them. I think they will definitely help us accomplish all of the goals that we have set for this year. Nothing is impossible for the 2010-2011 Buccaneers.

This past weekend I watched what seemed like a lot of football. I think it seemed like so much because I was standing on the sidelines. If I had gotten to play it would be a different story. This fall I was assigned to Stratford High School as my clinical site for my Athletic Training major. Thursday night I watched the B-team and JV team bring in wins. The B-team game went into overtime which eventually caused me to miss the CSU Fall Festival. But that was fine with me because the B-team won. From what I hear, the Fall Festival was a lot of fun. My teammates all dressed in our travel suits and enjoyed riding the mechanical bull and some great music and cheers. Friday I had the opportunity to see some CSU men’s basketball alumni play in an alumni game. Some of the men who looked “older” could still move up and down the floor really well and made the younger guys look bad. It was fun to watch everybody on the floor and in the stands have a good time with one another. Saturday morning we had the privilege of sleeping in and practicing at 7:45 AM. After practice we watched our CSU Buccaneers face off with VMI for the homecoming football game. But that was only part of the reason that we watched the game. Katie Tull had the traditional duty of passing down the crown to the new homecoming queen. (Yes, Katie was our school’s homecoming queen last year.) So we were all there to support her.

So those were the highlights of this past homecoming weekend. It was a lot of fun and excitement on campus for our team and student body. But I cannot wait until we start playing games, because that is when the real fun starts.

Weekly Recap - October 18 - 24

Hopefully everyone had a great time at homecoming, I know we had a great turnout at all of the events surrounding the football game. It was also great to see some of the members of “The Team that Started it All” at the 1985 football reunion.

Sophomore women’s golfer Amanda D’Ostroph has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after carding the highest finish of her collegiate career this week. D’Ostroph, who received consideration for Big South Golfer of the Week honors, shot 75-75 to finish eight over par with a 150.

Her score was enough for fifth-place out of 68 golfers, four shots off the lead, and helped lead the Buccaneer team to a fifth-place team finish. She was tops in the field on par 5 scoring, averaging 4.67 for the tournament, while registering four birdies.

Also Nominated: Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Michelle Dennis (Women’s Soccer), Deon Lee (Football)

October 18-19 – Women’s Golf – Wendy’s Invitational – T-5th

For the first time this season in Big South play, CSU lost a game, doing so by a 2-1 count to Coastal Carolina. In a physical game, the Bucs held their own, and the game looked like it would come down to a late goal to decide it. CSU thought they had it as Michelle Dennis score her sixth goal of the season, settling a ball in the box and putting it away in the 68th minute. CCU immediately went back on an all-out attack and scored to even the match in the 80th minute, finding the game winner in the 88th minute to hand CSU its first loss of the Big South slate.

October 23 – Football vs. VMI – L, 34-16
Charleston Southern outgained VMI 386-242, but lost their homecoming contest against the Keydets 34-16, Saturday at Buccaneer Field. The loss drops the Bucs to 2-5 (0-3) and marks the first time since 2003 that CSU has lost three home games in a season.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Abby Poole - October 19, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What’s up Lady Buc fans?!
This week was a different week than most for our team. Fall break here at CSU started on Wednesday afternoon at 5pm. That means Thursday and Friday we just have to go to basketball practice and weights, whoo hooo. Coach told us Tuesday that if our Wednesday, Thursday and Friday practices were all good and everybody was going hard that we would get Saturday off. Also, this week we started real full blown practice (2+ hours) which takes a lot of focus to get through amongst other things, but so do games.

For me personally this week was a very special week because I had a one-year anniversary with my boyfriend, Andrew White. Thursday once practice was over I was able to get dressed up and go enjoy an amazing dinner at my favorite restaurant in Charleston (The Boathouse on the Isle of Palms) and exchange gifts. He is a special part of my life.

Back to basketball…I want to let all of you know that in my years of being here at CSU we have never had a team practice this hard or be as vocal as we are during practice. I am very pleased with the effort that we as a team are giving to get better day after day. Sunday we were challenged with getting the Perfection Drill in 6 minutes and we did it on the first try! This was a major achievement for us, but it is only one little piece that will make us better come game time. Friday after practice Lakeitha and I put together our warm-up CD to get us pumped up and ready to play a game. Saturday night, a bunch of us girls went to the Boone Hall haunted house, maze and hayride. Some of the girls just did one or the other while a few of them did the maze and the haunted house. I was told that Shay Jones was the most scared and didn’t even want to go through the maze but was pulled in by our teammates. : ) Well, that pretty much sums up another great week of Lady Buc Basketball. I hope all of y’all have a great week and we hope to see you in the Buc Dome on November 6 for our first game!!!

MISSION POSSIBLE BABY!!!!

Weekly Recap - October 11 - 18

Volleyball is riding a three-game winning streak, the soccer team is establishing themselves as one of the best in the Big South with a dominant 8-0 victory over UNC Asheville, the cross country teams are at their best as they prepare for the Big South Championship, and football continues to post impressive performances despite the final score not being what they would like.

Also coming out this week were the preseason Big South men’s and women’s basketball polls as well as the preseason All-Big South selections. The men were picked seventh, while Jamarco Warren was selected to the all-conference team, while the women were picked fourth, their highest preseason ranking since 1996. Katie Tull earned a spot on the women’s all-conference team.

Gerald Stevenson can add CSU Athlete of the Week to his accomplishments after becoming the first player in CSU and Big South history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game.

Stevenson had returns of 92 and 81 yards, giving him three kick returns for touchdowns in the last two games. His 92-yard return made it on ESPN’s Top-10 Plays, coming in at #7. In addition to CSU Athlete of the Week, Stevenson was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, and the CFPA Kick Returner of the Week, both awards were given to Stevenson for the second-straight week.

Stevenson shattered the CSU and Big South records for all-purpose yards with 389 against Gardner-Webb.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Katie Tull - October 12, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What's up to all the CSU fans out there?! Its round two with this blog shindig and it’s my turn to give it a go. My name is Katie Tull and I'm a senior here at the University...I'm not near the grammatical genius that Miss Wasmer is so you'll have to bear with me :) This past week has been a crazy one, but it feels good to get some real live basketball practices under our belts. A top highlight for us as a team; we KILLED the Olympic shooting drill, we are setting the bar high this year baby!! It’s the time of year that BANa (our rehydration drinks) and ice baths become our best friend; but hey it'll be worth when we're winning our conference rings right? :) Coach G, being the saint that she is, so graciously gave us the weekend off which gave me and my teammates time to relax and catch up with the friends and fam. Some of the girls used their weekend off, as well as some of the coaches to help out with Habitat for Humanity...I hear they had a blast, and it’s definitely a testimony for the character of the team we have this year. You know, I was thinking the other day, and became pretty curious as to the actual definition of a Buccaneer, and here it is: buccaneer is taken from the word "boucanier" which literally means, to smoke some meat. Well, I think this definition is darn near perfect, because that's EXACTLY what we plan on doing this season, smoking some Big South meat :) sooo, anyone up for a cook out, jump on board! That's all I have for now, we'll see ya on the court

Weekly Recap - October 4 - 10

CSU had plenty of career performances this week, all while going against some of the best competition in the Big South. As a result, Gerald Stevenson and Charles James earned weekly honors from the Big South.

Charles James earned Big South Defensive Player and CSU Athlete of the Week honors for his performance against Liberty this weekend.

The sophomore defensive back tied the Big South Conference single-game record with a school-record three interceptions Saturday at Liberty, in addition to recording 10 total tackles (seven solo, three assisted) and four pass break-ups.  James limited Chris Summers to just four receptions for 48 yards and no touchdowns when he was in the game (Summers’ final reception, a 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with :28 seconds left was without James in the game).  James now has five interceptions in his last two games.

Also nominated: Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Marky Boyce (Soccer)

October 3-4 - Men’s Golf @ 3rd Annual Rees Jones Collegiate – 9th
The men’s golf team went to Daufuskie Island, an exclusive resort and golf club, to take part in the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State University at Haig Pointe. Buccaneer BasketBlog - Kelsey Wasmer - October 5, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What’s up everybody?! How are all the Lady Buc fans doing? I’m doing just great, especially considering this past Monday the 4th was our last conditioning workout and we are now on our way to official practice! It feels good to have fought through the grueling preseason conditioning. All of us Lady Bucs are in the best shape ever and now ready to prepare for great things this season. We are all feeling good about this coming week. We’re all so hyped and ready to move forward as a team. Also, Coach Goodenough so generously gave us this past Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday off. I think this was really good for each of us. While many of the girls got to go home and see their families a few of us stayed around the Chuck and relaxed and enjoyed time with our other families here. One of the girls on the team, Anicia, aka “Nish” got into a car wreck while she was home in Clemson. We are all very thankful that she and her mom are okay. They both came out with burns and bruises but other than that the good Lord had his guardian angels watching over them! Well Lady Buc fans that’s all I got for now. Keep us in your prayers. We all know God is preparing to do great things with us as a team and family this season. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible (Luke 18:27).” Ready for the Challenge - Mission Possible BABY!

Peace out,

Kelsey

Weekly Recap - September 27 - October 3

Just a couple of announcements that we want to make sure you are aware of: First, the 2010 cross country media guide has been released online. Make sure you check that out to find out more about the men’s and women’s cross country programs. Also, make sure you go to ESPN.com and vote for Jordan Lancaster as the captain for the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. You can follow this Link or can go directly to ESPN.com and search for key word “Good Works.”

Marky Boyce has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after posting three goals in two games, two of which were game-winners.

Boyce scored the game-winner with 0:01 on the clock against Longwood, corralling a back-heel pass from Caitlin Wesnesky in the box before hammering it home with time running out. The goal gave CSU a 2-1 victory over Longwood. She followed that performance up on Saturday with two goals against Liberty, helping CSU to a 3-2 victory. Her first goal was off a nice pass that got Boyce loose in the box. With all the patience in the world despite defenders bearing down on her, Boyce settled the ball and drilled it into the corner of the net. Then in the 67th minute she intercepted a cross from the LU defense and again found the back of the net for what proved to be her second game-winner in a row.

September 28 – Soccer vs. Longwood – W, 2-1
A regulation soccer game is 90 minutes long and it took the Lady Bucs 89:59 to find the game winner, but they did so on a beautiful back heel pass from Caitlin Wesnesky to Marky Boyce, who despite the clock winding down took a touch in the box and buried it in the back of the next with one second showing on the clock. It was a hand ball in the 55th minute that gave CSU their first goal as the result was a penalty kick that freshman Emma Krantz buried in the corner of the net.

After Toni Lashley had a one-on-one with the keeper blocked, she got another chance in the second half and did not miss, finding the equalizer. In the 67th minute, CSU scored again, this time it was a poor clearance by the Flames’ defenders that put the ball right at the feet of Boyce at the top of the 18. Again, she knew what to do with it, scoring her 13th goal of the season and giving CSU the 3-2 victory.
