Former Buccaneer Dwayne Jackson to Partner with Athletes in Action

Former Buccaneer men's basketball player Dwayne Jackson has a unique opportunity to travel to Central Asia in March with Athletes in Action, the athletic ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. The trip will utilize the platform of basketball to share Christ in the middle of a predominantly Muslim country. He is trying to raise money to make the trip possible and is asking for tax-deductible donations to Campus Crusade under his name. Weekly Recap - January 18 - 24

Saturday’s “Go Blue” double-header was a huge success, despite a couple of tough losses on the court. We had a great crowd on hand for both games at the CSU Field House, and more importantly collected a tremendous amount of shoes for Samaritan’s Feet as part of the “Barefoot for Bare Feet” campaign. Both CSU coaches coached in bare feet during their games to raise awareness for the cause. Coach Green from Liberty also participated, having the Flames donate shoes as the starting lineups were announced before the game. The CSU Athletic Department would like to thank everyone who donated shoes and/or money for the cause, as well as all of those who helped out in promoting and running the promotion.

Levi Brooks won his heat of the 400m dash, finishing second overall at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational, earning CSU Athlete of the Week honors. The first time this season he has run the 400m dash, Brooks finished in 48.07 for the runner-up finish.

Brooks was also part of the 4x400m relay team that finished second in its heat and seventh overall, 0.2 seconds behind George Mason. Their time was the top time run by a Big South school, almost three full seconds ahead of Radford, who finished eighth in the event. It was also the first meet this year that the Bucs have run the 4x400m relay, combining to run the fifth-best time in school history.

Katie Tull, who averaged 18 points per game, was also nominated for the honor.

January 18 – WBB vs. Wingate – W, 62-59
Known for their three-point shooting, it was the defense that pushed CSU over the top against a solid Wingate team. CSU made just six of their 29 three-point attempts, but got 25 points from Katie Tull and a career-high 19 points from LeChell Rush. Tina DeCarvalho grabbed eight rebounds for the Bucs after coming off the bench.

Weekly Recap - January 11 - 17

The men’s basketball team is on a roll in Big South play, having won their last three League games, including a dominant victory over Radford, a tournament participant last year and preseason pick to repeat as champions. They currently sit in third place in the Big South, with the leader Coastal coming in for a contest next Saturday.

A five-game road trip proved tough for the women’s team, but they are now in the middle of a four-game home stand, trying to get some momentum.

Next Saturday (Jan. 23), both teams will be in action as part of a double header at the CSU Field House. The coaches are going “Barefoot for Bare Feet” as part of the Big South’s initiative to raise awareness for Samaritan’s Feet, an organization designed to bring shoes and hope to kids around the world who cannot afford a decent pair of shoes. The teams are also encouraging fans to wear blue for “Go Blue” night, where we will recognize a number of students who have attended a certain number of “Go Blue” events during the fall semester.

The Big South Freshman of the Week last week and the Big South Player of the Week this week, Jeremy Sexton has earned CSU Athlete of the Week honors after averaging 19.0 points per game in two Big South games. Sexton has been a key part of the surge that CSU has seen in League play, having scored 15 points or more in each of the last six games and has scored double figures in 12 of his 18 games this season.

After tying for team-high scoring honors with 20 points in the victory against High Point, Sexton was second on the team with 18 against Radford. He also had a combined six assists and two steals.

Katie Tull was also nominated for the honor.

Jan. 12 – WBB @ Savannah State – W, 69-36
CSU proved dominant in every phase of the game as they got a big road win against a Savannah State team that played tough at the Buc Dome earlier in the season. Katie Tull had five threes while Kelsey Wasmer added three treys. Both finished the game with 17 points.

Despite not shooting the ball well (just 19 percent for the game), the women’s basketball team hung with the best team in the conference for the majority of the game. After trailing by five at halftime, Katie Tull hit a quick three followed by a layup to tie the game. The two teams went back and forth before the missed opportunities finally proved costly for CSU.

As we said before, the preseason pick to repeat as Big South Champions came into the CSU Field House, trying to redeem themselves after a loss at Coastal on Thursday night. CSU would have none of it as a great defensive scheme limited the touches by probably player of the year Art Parakhouski, giving him just 11 points on the day. Meanwhile, Jeremy Sexton dropped in 18 and Jamarco Warren had 21 to lead all scorers. CSU also shot 16-17 from the free throw line in the second half (did not have a free throw attempt in the first half). Those free throws down the stretch helped keep RU at a distance to seasl the victory.

Weekly Recap - Jan. 4 - 10

Campus is buzzing with the return of the students this weekend and the start of classes today. Pair that with Big South Conference basketball matchups that have already proven every game is going to be a fight and it makes for an exciting time of year. The men’s basketball team has put up a 3-1 record in the last four games, with two overtime games, and the other two games being decided by three points each. The women’s team got a win on the road at UNC Asheville, which will likely prove to be a key victory when the final standings shake out in March.

Freshman Jeremy Sexton earns his first CSU Athlete of the Week honor of his career after averaging a team-best 18.3 points per game in three games last week. He shot almost 60 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from three.

Against Winthrop, Sexton had 19 points, including a stretch of 11 straight points for CSU. On the road against UNC Asheville, Sexton had 10 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation, and hit a three with 31 seconds left in the first overtime, which gave CSU for good as they held on for the victory.

Weekly Recap - December 28 - January 3

First off, we hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. Like most of the world, we are “officially” back to work today, although both basketball teams enjoyed abbreviated breaks, getting back on the court on the 29th with tough non-conference opponents.

With 37 points and a game-tying three with time winding down against Presbyterian College, Jamarco Warren is this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week. In the last three games, dating back to Dec. 21, Warren is averaging better than 30 points per game (30.6) with a pair of 37-point performances at home against Southeastern and Presbyterian. He also led the team with 18 points against Auburn.

Warren’s 37 against Southeastern marked the first time since the 2006-07 season that a Buccaneer has topped 30 points. He then duplicated the feat with a dramatic 30-foot three pointer as the clock expired to send the game against Presbyterian into overtime.

December 29 – WBB @ College of Charleston – L, 64-59
The women’s basketball team didn’t finish 2009 or start 2010 the way they would have wanted to, but 12 games into the season, they still have a .500 record, despite a 1-4 record on the road. Against the College of Charleston, the Cougars jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game, holding a 12 point advantage at the half. CSU would claw back, but despite 14 points from Katie Tull and 12 from Ali Schwagmeyer, they would fall to their cross-town rivals.

CSU held a lead for much of the first half and trailed by just three at the break, thanks to a 57 percent shooting effort. A 10-3 run to start the second half distanced the Tigers from the Bucs and Auburn went on to win by 15. Jamarco Warren had 18 points and four three pointers, while Kelvin Martin had 12 and Tom Tankelewicz added 11 points.

Kelsey Wasmer scored 17 points, two off her season high, but the Charleston Southern women’s basketball team struggled shooting the ball and the Buccaneers fell to High Point University 68-56 in the Big South Conference opener. Katie Tull had 10 points, but for the first time all season did not hit a single three pointer.

Game Story

January 2 – MBB vs. Presbyterian – W, 79-73 (OT)
Things looked grim for CSU to get its first Big South win, trailing by five with :35 left in the game. Jamarco Warren took over, though, and hit a pair of threes, including a 30-footer with the clock winding down, tying the game and sending it into overtime. The defense had it from there as PC hit just one field goal in the five minute overtime period, while Jeremy Sexton had a trio of layups for CSU to push them to the win.
