Weekly Recap - February 21 - 27

The men’s basketball regular season came to a close but that just means that March Madness is almost here. The 2011 Big South Men’s Basketball Championship begins on Tuesday so make sure you log on to www.BigSouthSports.com to get all the information or watch the tournament on the Big South Network, presented by State Farm. The women still have three regular season games remaining, all at home, so make sure you come out and support them down the stretch as they try to make a run going into the tournament.

Coming off his second-straight Big South Track Performer of the Year honor, Javon Young has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Young won the 60m and 200m dash events at the 2011 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson, and was also a member of the first-placed 4x400m relay team, scoring 30 points for the team. Young already ranks in the top-15 in the nation in the 60m dash and will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second year in a row.

Also Nominated - Kelsey Wasmer (WBB), Jesse Cadenhead (Baseball), Erin Kegley (Softball), Michael Bailey (Men’s Track), Daisy Whitaker (Women’s Track), Jermal McClendon (Men’s Track), Olga Makhova (Women’s Tennis)

February 20-22 - W. Golf @ Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic – 24th
The Lady Bucs shot a consistent 315 in the final two rounds to finish 24th out of a huge and tough field at the 2011 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The team shot 954 for the tournament and edged out fellow Big South teams Bucknell, Presbyterian and Winthrop, as well as the College of Charleston. Amanda D’Ostroph shot 233 for 56th place individually, while Katelyn Bensch carried her hole-in-one on the practice round into a 234 and a tie for 59th.

February 21 – WBB @ Presbyterian – W, 63-52
A game after exploding for 98 points and a Big South record 18 3’s, the CSU women’s basketball team found another way to win a game…defense. In a low-scoring affair, the Bucs held PC to just 52 points and kept themselves in the conversation for a fourth-place finish in the league. The game was just 20-18 at halftime, getting close to season-lows for points in a half for both teams. Lakeitha Alston had 18 points while Kelsey Wasmer had her seventh double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

February 22 – Baseball vs. Furman – W, 5-3
Nick Chinners and Derek Smith had the first two homers of the season for the Bucs and Brantley Meier scored twice for CSU as the Bucs got past Furman for the second win of the year, evening the record at 2-2. Anthony Markham earned the victory, despite coming into the game in relief. Corey Deighan finished the game out, striking out two batters in the ninth for his second save of the year.

February 22 – Softball @ College of Charleston, L, 6-3, L, 4-3
CSU had a lead in both games, but surrendered late runs in a double-header loss to College of Charleston. After giving up four runs in the sixth inning of game one, the Lady Bucs showed a lot of heart bouncing back from game one to hold a lead going into the seventh inning of game two, but a game-tying homer sent the game to extra innings and the College of Charleston prevailed, sweeping the double header from CSU. Kristin Kelleher had two hits, both doubles in game one, while Kimberly Hobbs gave the Bucs a chance in game two, retiring 14-straight batters to start the game.

February 22 – MBB vs. Gardner-Webb – W, 72-61
GWU proved to be a hiccup on the road earlier in the season, but facing them back at home, where the Bucs have been so dominating, the Bucs took care of their business and kept pace for a home seed in the upcoming Big South tournament. Jamarco Warren had 20 points, giving him 71 in the last three games as the senior appears to be willing his team to victories down the stretch. Kelvin Martin had yet another double-double with 14 poitns and 12 rebounds.

February 24-25 – Track and Field @ Big South Indoor Championships
Javon Young led the men’s team with 30 points, three first-place finishes, earning him Track Performer of the Year honors for the second year in a row, while the Bucs posted a total of 12 all-conference (top-3) performances and four conference champions as the men’s team finished third and the women’s team finished fourth overall. Nearly everyone who competed posted a season or personal best during the week, and the Bucs broke a pair of school records with Michael Bailey doing so in the 3,000m run and Jermal McClendon tied the high jump record.

February 24 – W. Tennis vs. North Florida
After taking two of the doubles matches and winning that point, play was suspended. No date has been set at this time as far as making up the singles play.

February 25-26 – Softball @ Hatter Classic, 3-2 record
The Buccaneer softball team finished in third place after taking down the hosting Stetson Hatters 9-4 in the consolation game of the Hatter Classic. After posting a 2-2 record and tying for a chance to take part in the championship game, the Bucs lost the tie breaker due to runs allowed over the course of the tournament. Erin Kegley hit .571 for the weekend as CSU rebounded from a 4-1 loss to Valparaiso on day one to beat Bethune-Cookman twice, (3-2) (11-3) before falling to Stetson on Saturday night, 9-5.

February 25-26 – Baseball @ First Pitch Classic
An unofficial tournament, hosted by Clemson, the Bucs posted a 1-2 record on the weekend with losses to Michigan State (3-0) and Clemson (19-1). In the final game for CSU, they took down Cincinnati 9-5 as Jesse Cadenhead got the victory on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Derek Smith had four hits for CSU with a home run, while Brantley Meier had three hits and a career-high four RBI.

February 26 – W. Tennis vs. Gardner-Webb – W, 4-3
It came down to the final match as the Bucs got their first Big South win of the year, 4-3 over Gardner-Webb. After dropping the doubles point, CSU knew it had its work cut out, but Brooke Pletcher made quick work of her opponent at the number three flight to even the match. Susita Doss and Alia Nour also won their matches, leaving it up to Olga Makhova to pull it out for CSU. After falling 6-7 in the first set, Makhova dominated her opponent 6-2, 6-3 in the final two sets to clinch the victory for CSU.

February 26 – WBB vs. Radford – L, 81-78 (OT)
Kelsey Wasmer hit a huge three at the end of regulation to tie the game and send the game into overtime, but with Danielle Gibson, Lakeitha Alston and Katie Tull all on the bench having fouled out, CSU struggled to find offense and eventually fell in overtime to Radford. The Bucs were called for 31 fouls in the game to Radford’s 18, and there was an incredible 41-11 discrepancy at the free throw line, favoring the visitors.

February 26 – MBB vs. Coastal Carolina – 81-77
Warren again tried to will his team to victory, scoring 30 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Bucs fell to Winthrop, 81-77 in the final regular-season home game of the year for the Buccaneers. Kelvin Martin had 16 points but just five rebounds in the loss. Unfortunately for the Bucs, the loss eliminated the Bucs from contention to host a first-round game in the upcoming championships, which will start on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Instead, the Bucs will travel to Asheville for their first round matchup against the #3 seeded Bulldogs.

What’s coming up?

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Kelsey Wasmer - February 24, 2011

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What’s up everybody? I’m here to fill you in on what’s going on in the Lady Buc’s world. Well as I’m sure you already saw, we went 2-0 on the road this past weekend! It definitely was one of our best road trips of the season…well I might want to take that statement back... I am not sure if Coach G would say it was one of the best for her... Let’s just say her body does not enjoy riding a bus throughout the mountains. However, she was definitely a trooper because she never once missed a practice or shoot around. We all decided that she should be called Super Woman!

Okay, back to what I was saying… This past weekend was huge for our team since we have been struggling on the road throughout the season. However, we believe these two wins will really help us finish strong in our last 4 home games and also give us momentum going into the Conference Tournament. This week we have been getting ready for our next opponent –Radford University. We will be playing them Saturday at 2 pm. We lost a close one against them at their place so we definitely are ready for some revenge. Also, we are asking all our fans to bring any type of toiletries to our game for the fundraiser ‘Soap for Souls.’ We will be donating all that we collect to families who are in need. If you bring 2 or more toiletry items you will be put in a drawing for prizes that will be occurring during halftime of our game. The prizes consist of a gift card or some type of CSU Women’s Basketball apparel.

Well that is all I got for now but before I go I just wanted to say thank you to all our fans out there. We appreciate all your love and support for this basketball program. You all make everything so much better for us and we are so blessed to have each of you on our side. See you all on Saturday at 2! Love ya’ll!

#22 Kelsey Wasmer

Weekly Recap - February 14 - 20

Highlighting this week’s action was the men’s basketball team claiming the Big South’s lone victory in the Sears/ESPN BracketBuster games, while the baseball team took a game from North Florida in their season opener. Additionally, the women’s basketball team set a new Big South record for 3-pointers made in a game (18) in a rout of UNCA and the softball team took down Virginia Tech in their home tournament. We also want to give a shout out to the golf programs who claimed hole in ones on back-to-back days. Even though it didn’t count in competition, Katelyn Bensch, hit a hole in one on the ninth hole during a practice round at Kiawah. Then the next day Coach Mike Wilson hit one on 13 at Crowfield in a match play competition, winning the match for him putting him four up.

With 51 points in two games, both victories, Jamarco Warren has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week.

Warren started the week with a 31-point performance in the Bucs’ victory over UNC Asheville, a victory that kept them in the heart of the race to finish in the top-4 and earn the first round home game in the upcoming Big South Tournament. He followed that up with 20 points against UNC Wilmington in a non-conference game that was part of the Sears/ESPN BracketBuster series. The Bucs were the lone team in the Big South to win out of the nine conference teams participating.

Also Nominated - Kelsey Wasmer (WBB), Stew Brase (Baseball), Trea Steele (Softball)

February 15 – MBB vs. UNC Asheville – W, 79-70
Jamarco Warren bounced back from a tough weekend to drop 31 points and lead CSU back from an 11-point hole to beat UNC Asheville and make a big claim to a top-4 seed in the conference tournament. With the victory the Bucs continue to control their own destiny in regards to getting that placement and in turn, a first-round home game. With two games remaining, if the Bucs win out, they are guaranteed a home game. Kelvin Martin also returned to the lineup for the Bucs with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance.

February 18-19 – SB vs. Va. Tech, Ohio, Mercer (Buccaneer Invite) – 1-3 Record
After taking down Virginia Tech 10-9 in extra innings, the Buccaneers looked like they would roll to the championship game, but offensive struggles in the final three games dashed those hopes. The Bucs fell 5-0 to Mercer in a game that stretched over two calendar days due to darkness on Friday night, and then had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th against Ohio, but a fluke play on a ball that looked like it was going up the middle ended the game at 1-0 for Ohio, and put CSU at 1-2 after the round-robin play. The loss also put CSU in the consolation game against Mercer, where they scored once late but fell 5-1.

February 18-19 – Baseball vs. North Florida – L, 12-8, W, 2-1, L, 7-0
Walt Quattlebaum, Nick Chinners and Brantley Meier each had five hits on the weekend, while Stew Brase turned in an excellent pitching performance on Friday to help the Bucs get the victory, going 5.1 innings with one run allowed and scattering five hits. The Bucs had plenty of hits, just one less than UNF, but couldn’t get the timely ones as they were outscored 20-10 on the weekend.

February 19 – WBB vs. Asheville – W, 98-79
Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was falling for the Lady Buccaneers in the first half as they shot 60 percent from the floor, and scored 58 points in the first half alone with 11 3-pointers. The 58 points was more than CSU has scored in 10 different games this season. Lakeitha Alston had 21 points, including a 3-3 mark behind the arc, while Kelsey Wasmer led all scorers with 23 points and seven 3-pointers.

February 19 – MBB vs. UNC Wilmington (BracketBuster) – W, 63-58
As mentioned, out of nine teams participating, the Bucs were the only Big South team to win their BracketBuster game, doing so in what some on the team described as the best atmosphere this season, facing a homecoming crowd in Wilmington. Jamarco Warren had 20 points and seven rebounds, while Kelvin Martin just missed his second-straight double-double back from injury as he had 13 points and nine rebounds.

What’s coming up?

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Abby Poole - February 17, 2011

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey there Lady Buc Fans….

What’s going on? It’s been a while since I got to tell you about what’s going on with us. I am in my last semester here at good ole CSU, I have to admit it’s bittersweet. I am excited to graduate and move on to another chapter in my life. First though….we have to win the Big South Championship. This past weekend, Beth Boyle, one of our biggest fans came along with us on the bus and the whole trip to High Point. The day of, if you walked past her office she was bouncing off the walls excited to come and be a part of the team. Beth told us she had never been a part of a team before, I was excited to be a part of her first experience. The whole trip up Beth was wide awake she couldn’t sit still. She showed us a video that was made by her for us, about our team…she had other people on campus give us words of encouragement…Mrs. Dixon, some students, Jessie our bible study leader, Coach Kelly….all of them were amazing, for a few of us seniors including myself the video brought tears to our eyes….and many of us were ready to play as soon as she showed us the video!!! It was awesome & I hope she puts it on Facebook soon..Hint hint!!

As you all know Valentine’s day was this past Monday… Valentine’s day for me is very special because it is the same day as mine and Andrew’s anniversary…a whole 16 months!! Coach was so gracious to re-schedule practice from 4pm to 6:30am so that we would be able to have Valentine’s night off. Mine started off great around 1ish I was delivered a beautiful bouquet of tulips (pictures on facebook), but if you know me you know Andrew likes to spoil me, later that day I spent the rest of my time with him and his family. We had dominos heart shaped pizza’s for dinner then we exchanged valentines gifts. You would have thought it was Christmas all over again…Andrew gave me a stuffed animal, chocolate covered pretzels..my favorite, some new earrings, and an auxiliary cord for when I get my birthday present installed.  I gave him 2 DVD’s and some candy…he loved it. That isn’t the end of Valentine’s though, we went out to eat on Wednesday to California Dreaming, gosh that place is so good!! The good thing about February is that it’s my birthday month also!!! Which means more reasons for Andrew to spoil me…I already know what I’m getting for my birthday and its getting installed on Saturday when we are out of town so Monday night when we get back from spanking PC and Asheville I will already have my Birthday present!! I bet your all wondering what it is…he is getting a new radio/cd player put into my car so that I will be able to play my ipod without having to find a good channel. WOOOHOO! If you are interested to see what else he surprises me with check out Facebook next week I’m almost positive there will be pictures!!

I just want to add that all of my teammates are amazing and by far this year has been the best year! I love you all so much and thank you for making my senior year so great!! SENIOR NIGHT IS FRIDAY MARCH 4 AT 7pm—vs Coastal Carolina. We better have a packed house that night..and get there early to watch us seniors get recognized!! Thank you all for all of your support this season, you guys are what make it so enjoyable to play and be proud to represent an amazing school like CSU.
Love y’all

Weekly Recap - February 7-13

Softball started their season with a pair of victories, while the women’s tennis team got the first road win of their young season and the men’s track team competed against some of the best in preparation for the end of the indoor season.

With a bunch of strong performances around the department this weekend, Jonathan Rustin has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after posting an undefeated record in match play.

While the Bucs posted a 2-2 overall record, Rustin was 3-0-1 as an individual, one of the only players in the tournament to escape unscathed. He won 3-and-1 in the first match against Kennesaw State, winning 3-and-2 against Morehead State and 2-and-1 against his opponent from Cleveland State.

Also Nominated Zack Pociatek (Men’s Track), Javon Young (Men’s Track), Katie Tull (Women’s Basketball), Heather Isbell (Women’s Tennis), Johathan Brooks (Men’s Basketball), Morgan Dowdy (Softball)

February 10 – M. Basketball @ Winthrop – L, 75-68
In the absence of Kelvin Martin, Johathan Brooks stepped up with another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, but the Bucs managed just eight offensive boards in a road loss at Winthrop. Sheldon Strickland had 20 points and Jeremy Sexton had 10, but Winthrop had an unlikely offensive explosion, with four players scoring at least 15 points.

February 11-12 – M. Golf @ The Match Play – 2-2 record
Led by Jonathan Rustin’s 3-0-1 record, the Bucs beat Loyola-Maryland and Cleveland State but fell to Morehead State and Kennesaw State. It was the first match play tournament of the year for the Bucs, pitting the Bucs up against their opponents in a one-on-one match up.

February 11-12 – M. Track & Field @ Tiger Paw
Javon Young finished first in the 200m dash, while the 4x400m relay finished second to Clemson but seven seconds ahead of everyone else in their heat. Additionally, Zack Pociatek threw a personal best 15.62m in the weight throw, the fourth-best throw in school history. It was the last meet of the season before facing the Big South Conference the last weekend of the month.

February 11-13 - Softball @ Palmetto State Showdown – 2-2 record
Melissa Adams had five hits on the weekend, while Hayes Holdsworth hit her first career-homerun, a game-winner, to lead CSU to a 2-2 record with victories over Winthrop and Furman, falling to South Carolina and tournament-champion USC Upstate. Morgan Dowdy had a strong showing in the circle, pitching 20.2 innings with a 1.02 ERA and a 2-0 record. In four games, the Lady Bucs have already hit six home runs, giving up just two.

February 12 – W. Tennis vs. Stetson – L, 6-1
Heather Isbell won her singles match in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-3), while teaming up with Alia Nour to win doubles (8-5), but it was the only two matchups that the Bucs won as they fell to a 4-0 Stetson squad in Alabama as part of a three-team tournament. The Bucs would take on the hosts, Troy, later in the weekend.

February 12 – W. Basketball @ High Point – L, 68-54
Katie Tull had 19 points, but for the first time in her career, Kelsey Wasmer was shut down and held scoreless, and the Bucs got just four points from their bench, a combination that makes it nearly impossible to win on the road in the Big South. Lakeitha Alston had 17 points for CSU, but got in foul trouble late in the game, limiting her minutes down the stretch.

February 12 – M. Basketball @ Presbyterian – L, 61-48
Shooting just 23 percent, including an 8-29 (27 percent) clip in the second half, the Bucs had their lowest point total since the season-opener against Georgia Tech. Jeremy Sexton was the lone Buc in double-figures, while Brooks had 14 rebounds to pace CSU. The Bucs cut the lead to six with 4:06 to go, but a nine-point spurt by PC put the Bucs away for good.

February 13 – W. Tennis @ Troy – W, 4-3
It took a major comeback, but CSU won its first match of the season, beating Troy 4-3 after starting in a 1-3 hole. Troy swept the doubles action, forcing CSU to get it done in the singles action. Marija Dzakovic made quick work of her opponent to tie the match at 1-1 before Troy rattled off two-straight singles victories. Alia Nour won hers, and after dropping a set each, Olga Makhova and Brooke Pletcher had to work back and win their singles, which they did to win the match for the Bucs.

Weekly Recap - January 31 - February 6

If you have been following us on Twitter or Facebook recently, you’ve heard about the streak and probably know that it came to an end this weekend. Even so, the Bucs were one of the last four standing in which neither the men’s nor the women’s team had lost a game on their home court this season. We have a great home court advantage here at CSU, and it is thanks to fans like you. We want to encourage you to continue to come out and support both basketball teams as we get down the stretch. Both teams are tied for fourth in the Big South right now and need you to come out and be loud as they try to finish strong. Also, we are in the second week of February, which means that the softball season starts this week, and baseball is just another week away. Good luck to both of those teams as they begin their quests toward the Big South Championship.

After winning the long jump in record-setting fashion, Lavon Allen has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Allen took on a field of nearly 50 competitors at the New Balance Invitational and won the college division with a jump of 7.54m. The mark bested Anthony Reed’s record of 7.36m, which he had held since 1999.

Also Nominated - Katie Tull (Women’s Basketball), Johathan Brooks (Men’s Basketball), Heidi Dean (Women’s Track and Field), Jacobo Pastor (M. Golf)

January 31 – WBB vs. High Point – W, 80-72
The “Texas Twosome” as I like to call them (Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer) led the way, scoring a combined 52 points (26 each) out of the team’s 80, leading CSU past High Point at home. Wasmer played all 40 minutes of the game and had a double-double with 12 rebounds and four assists, while Tull played 36 minutes, draining six threes, including five in the first half. Danielle Gibson provided a much-needed boost with nine points, five of which came at the free throw line. Trailing by seven at halftime, the Bucs kicked it into high gear in half number two, shooting 58 percent from the field.

January 31-February 1 – M. Golf @ Jacksonville Invitational – 11th
Jacobo Pastor had four birdies in the final round, helping the Bucs to an 11th-place finishon the history TPC Sawgrass course in Jacksonville. Jonathan Rustin, David Denlinger, Brandon Caddow-Young and Will Pieper also shot well, as the Bucs beat out the hosting Jacksonville team, as well as Georgia State, James Madison and Old Dominion.

February 3 – MBB vs. VMI – W, 101-90
The game proved everything we thought it would be; fast-paced, high-scoring and close. That’s the way VMI plays, and CSU took advantage of the athleticism, scoring 100 points for the first time in Big South play and the fourth time this year. The Bucs shot 62.9 percent from the field for the game, including an unbelievable 71.9 percent in the first half as they out-scored VMI 55-48 in the first frame. A 10-12 mark from the free throw line in the second half helped CSU hold off the Keydets as six Bucs scored in double figures, including all of the starting five, and Sheldon Strickland off the bench.

February 4-5 – M. Track @ New Balance Invitational
The 4x200m relay team defended its title, edging out a professional team for the championship. The Bucs also got a record-breaking performance out of Lavon Allen, who shattered the old mark held by Anthony Reed since 1999, winning the competition in New York.

February 4-5 – W. Track @ ETSU Niswonger Invitational
Brittney Greer and Heidi Dean ran personal bests this weekend, as the Lady Bucs competed in one of the largest meets they will see in the indoor season. Again the weight throw seemed to be the best event for CSU as they put three of four competitors in the top-20, and all four in the top-25. Tamisha Foster also ran a season-best in the triple jump to finish fifth.

February 5 – WBB vs. Gardner-Webb – L, 71-64
Gardner-Webb got on a roll in the second half, knocking down everything they put up, and finished the half shooting better than 53 percent as GWU handed the Bucs their first home loss of the season. Undersized once again, the inside presence for the Bucs held strong, holding the top-four forwards for GWU to 19 points, getting 17 points out of Lakeitha Alston alone, but the Bulldogs just had too many weapons and hit key free throws down the stretch, becoming almost automatic in the second half (10-11).

February 5 – MBB vs. Liberty, L, 70-69
Jamarco Warren launched a half-court shot at the buzzer that hit the front of the rim as the Bucs’ hope of knocking off the second-ranked team in the conference also fell just short. Again all five starters for the Bucs scored in double figures with Johathan Brooks earning the double-double (14 points, 10 reb.) but the Bucs were out-scored 42-30 in the second half. Even so, that gap was made up less than eight minutes into the second half, when the game was tied at 49-49. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points.

What’s coming up?
February 10 – MBB @ Winthrop – 7 p.m.
February 11-12 – M. Golf @ The Match Play Championship
February 11-12 – M. Track & Field @ The Tiger Paw Invitational

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Katie Tull - February 2, 2011

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

What's up Buc Fanssss!!

If y'all didn't have a chance to catch our Monday night game, let me just tell you about it! We had a super exciting win over High Point University. They always have a competitive team, especially this year. Playing in our gym is beyond fun and the amount of student support we get each game helps us bring out our best performance. This was a huge win for us and hopefully will give us some momentum heading into Saturday's game vs. the Gardner Webb Bulldogs (boooo). Saturday is also our annual "think pink" game where our school and program tries to raise awareness and support for breast cancer, and breast cancer survivors. It will be an exciting match up, and an even better cause to come out and be a part of! Classes are going pretty smooth so far for my teammates and I, however last week was the first week of tests so some prayers for those results would be greatly appreciated :)

So, I'm from Texas and I got a picture from my mom yesterday saying they were SNOWED IN and couldn't go into work (she's a school teacher). Seeing as my whole family, especially myself, hateee the snow, calling my mother to inform her i was wearing shorts and a t-shirt in beautiful Charleston today was pretty entertaining! I heard a rumor that it was ground hog day, although my sources could definitely be pulling my leg....however, IF today is that special day, let's all pray for the beginning of spring time!

Thanks to all of our fans and supporters, your presence in our program means so much to us. Check out the website to see how our game goes Saturday, and definitely be cheering us on if you get the chance!! Hope everyone has a blessed week.....MP :)
