If you haven’t seen them already, make sure you check out our Buccaneer Updates from this past week.

February 16 – MBB vs. North Greenville – W, 94-65
Many times, a non-conference game stuck in the middle of a tough conference stretch can be considered a trap game. It’s easy to overlook them, especially when you know the top team in the Big South (Coastal Carolina) is waiting for you over the weekend. CSU was able not only to get the victory over NGU, but to do it in dominant fashion. A 53 percent clip from the floor gave CSU its highest point total (94) since a 94-66 victory over Southeastern on September 21. Jamarco Warren led the way with 28 points, while Jeremy Sexton continued his campaign for freshman of the year with 18 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Watch an interview with the men's 4x200m relay that ran the fastest time in the world this year. We have also posted a bunch of Buccaneer Updates this week on our YouTube page.

Weekly Recap - February 8 - 14

Our Buccaneer athletes broke records, earned Big South Player of the Week honors three times, and got big victories this week including two women’s basketball wins on the hardwood and two softball wins on the road at the College of Charleston.

Kelsey Wasmer, the 4x200m relay team and Kelvin Day were all honored by the Big South to highlight the week of action.

Day however, edged out the others for CSU Athlete of the Week honors. In a field featuring three of Golfweek’s Top 40 teams, Day finished runner-up at the 2010 JU Invitational, which was contested at The Players Stadium Course/TPC of Sawgrass (par 72, 7,122 yards).

Day shot rounds of 73, 75 and 71 to finish with a 3-over par 219, just one shot behind medalist and No. 16-ranked Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest. Day was one of just four players in the field to shoot under par on Tuesday, and he finished the tournament with six birdies. It also was Day’s second-straight 2nd-place finish and his 3rd top-10 finish of the season.

February 8 – WBB vs. High Point – W, 66-60
They were the preseason pick to win the Big South, but Monday night they were no match for CSU as the Bucs held serve at home with an important win to get to .500 in the conference. Katie Tull had 25 points, including 16 in the second half, while Kelsey Wasmer continued her hot streak with 17 points and seven rebounds. Free throws proved to be key as well, as CSU hit 17 of 18 from the charity stripe in the victory.

Weekly Recap - February 1 - 7

The first week in February was highlighted by a men’s basketball victory over one of the hottest teams in the Big South, a women’s basketball shoot-out win over Asheville, and a couple of school records on the track in New York City.

Javon Young has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week. Young broke the school record and hit the NCAA’s provisional mark in the 60m dash with a performance of 6.71 seconds. He went on to finish third in the championship division of the event that started with almost 60 runners.

Young went on to run the first leg of the 4x200m relay, an event that CSU dominated, breaking the meet and school record, winning by more than two full seconds. The time of 1:25.47 was just 0.42 seconds off the collegiate record held by Rutgers.

Kelsey Wasmer and Jamarco Warren also received serious consideration for this week’s honor.
February 1 – FCA Rally
The first event was want to discuss was not on the field/court/track of competition, but rather in the conference room of the Brewer Center. The first Monday of each month, the athletes, coaches and staffs come together for an FCA Rally. This month, the speaker was Adrian Despres, a world-renown speaker from Columbia, S.C., where he is the team chaplain for the USC football team. More than 50 decisions for Christ were made at the end of the powerful “four chairs” message. You can read more about the event at our main Web site.

February 1 – WBB @ Winthrop – L, 58-48
In their first regionally televised game of the season, the women’s basketball team battled hard but fell to Winthrop on the road. The game was televised on SportSouth in the southeast region. Shooting just 18 percent from three point range, one of the only bright spots was Kelsey Wasmer, who hit four threes and had a career-high nine rebounds, accounting for 21 points.

Weekly Recap - January 25 - 31

The biggest news on campus has been the servant attitude on campus. This year, CSU has been promoting its vision statement of “Integrating Faith in Learning, Leading and Serving,” and this week perhaps as much as any other week this year, students took this to heart.
Starting with the “Barefoot for Bare Feet” games, last weekend, CSU continued the shoe drive and collected almost 300 pairs of shoes for Samaritan’s Feet Ministries. Last Wednesday, CSU also hosted a Concert of Love for Haiti, raising more than $3,100 for relief efforts through the Baptist Global Relief.

We certainly appreciate everyone’s support and generosity for both causes.

One other note, our main athletic Web site (csusports.com) has been experiencing some difficulties over the past week. Although the bulk of our information has been restored, we are still waiting on a couple of things from our web provider and we appreciate your patience with us as we all work to get things back to normal.

CSU Athlete of the Week

After leading her team in scoring in a pair of victories this week, Katie Tull has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week. Tull averaged 17.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds while missing just three minutes of action.

With 19 points against Radford and 16 against Presbyterian College, Tull had seven treys and was an incredible 10-of-12 from the free throw line. This week, she recorded three assists, three blocks and three steals

She is currently atop the Big South and fourth in the national with threes per game (3.7) and is three treys short of the school’s single-season record.

January 25 – WBB vs. Radford – W, 67-61
Katie Tull scored 19 and Kelsey Wasmer added 18 points to lead CSU past Radford at the Buc Dome. The victory ended a three-game Big South losing skid, and got CSU back on the right track after upsetting the Highlanders, who started Big South play with a 4-1 record.

Game Story

January 30 – WBB @ Presbyterian – W, 64-49
Winning on the road is never easy in the Big South Conference, but when you hit 14 three-pointers, it gets a little easier. Katie Tull had four of the treys for CSU, dropping in a game-high 16 points, to lead the team to a 15-point victory over PC. CSU moved two games over .500 for the season and is one game away from evening their conference record.
