Buccaneer BasketBlog: Shay Jones

What's cracking Buc Fans and Family
Shay here, to tell you guys how big of a week we have had since Thanksgiving. Going hard and beating each other up in practice has been our emphasis in practice through out the week. By doing that we exceeded expectations and got two very very huge road game victories over our cross town rivals College of Charleston and yes the ACC Clemson Tigers. Well I'll start off by saying WE ARE THE CITY CHAMPS for two straight years. We hit the Cougars hard with our defensive pressure the entire game which means we pressed them the whole game. By pressing them, we forced 32 mistakes and in turn 36 points for us. We held the Cougars to 45 points, which is a big deal for us. We really proved to ourselves how defense can win games. Also, with Coach Lambert being a former player ,and graduate of The College, it was pretty awesome for her to sit on the CSU bench and beat her alma mater -lol.

Moving forward to the big time win over Clemson. Boy it feels so good to beat an ACC team! I don’t think they had any idea what we were capable of! We started the game focused and determined to come out with a W. WE LEAD THE GAME THE ENTIRE first half. The second half was an exhausting battle and we lost the lead a couple of times, but that did not stop us as we tried to capitalize on every offensive possession we got. Winning the last four minutes of the game was crucial in helping us come out victorious. It was teamwork that won the game, but a huge part came from our “too legit to quit” post player, Lakeitha Alston, who scored 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Her awesome performance was recognized by our conference as well as she was named the Big South Player of the Week. This was also a big time win for Coach Calvert who graduated from Clemson and also worked with the women's team. To beat both of these teams in the same week, was an awesome accopmlishment for our coaching staff who had personal relationships with both universities. (I think Coach Newland and Coach G were pretty happy too)

Well hope we are making you guys proud and anxious to come watch. All is left to say is BIG SOUTH WATCH OUT AND DON'T LET THE SIZE FOOL YOU!!!

What’s up all my Buc fans? It’s your girl Helen aka H-Teezy or HT, which ever you prefer. HaHaHa! I hope you all are as excited about the upcoming season as I am.

This past Saturday we kicked off our season with an exhibition win over the University of the South Sewanee 114 to 35. What better way to come out and play in front of our special visitor that we had in attendance! We came out and dominated the Tigers in every stat line. It felt great to finally be out on the floor again in front of our fans and see our freshman play as well as they did. Everyone came out and did what they needed to do to get the win for the Bucs. After the great victory we are looking forward to a week of hard work in practices as we have three games in FOUR DAYS this weekend. We face Furman Friday night @ 7pm, whom we fell short of a victory to last season by 1 point in a great game. I really look forward to this game because we are hungry for revenge. I'm excited to see how we will do this time. Saturday night @ 7pm we have a quick turn around and play Southern Wesleyan before we hit the road Sunday for our first road game Monday night @ 7pm against Western Carolina.

I look forward to seeing all of our great fans in the stands supporting us and I know we are ready to do some big things this year in Big South! With that being said Presbyterian, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, UNCA, Radford, Liberty, Campbell, High Point and Coastal Carolina better watch out! We have a great cast of returning players to go along with some awesome freshmen that have joined us, and we are ready to show the Big South how we roll! We definitely have a lot to prove this season, and we will be BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONS this year! Believe that!

Tuesday Tidbits: O’Rourke’s Observations on CSU Football and Basketball

Each Tuesday, I’ll pen my musings from the previous weekend’s games, and hopefully provide some food for thought going forward. Why Tuesday? Well, Monday provides an extra 24 hours for reflection, and makes my attempt to copy Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column slightly less apparent. Without further ado – or failed attempts at humor – here are a few notes from the Bucs’ 14-7 loss at Gardner-Webb, plus some reaction to happenings around the Big South.

Missed opportunities cost Bucs’ in difficult road defeat

Fifty-two underclassmen populate the 2011 Charleston Southern football roster, making Jay Mills’ squad one of the younger squads in the Big South conference, if not the country. It is often said that young teams have to learn how to win, and it appears CSU is doing just that. For the second time in three weeks, the Bucs had a road victory in their sights, but could not seal the deal. Here’s a look at a few reasons why that was the case.

• Heading into the Liberty game, Charleston Southern ranked second in the Big South in turnover margin. That has changed in the last two weeks, however, as back-to-back negative outings have dropped the Bucs to fifth at a -4 margin. To add insult to injury, both turnovers came on fourth quarter interceptions with CSU driving for potential game-tying scores. In the interest of fairness, neither was particularly egregious as one pick came on 3rd-and-13, and the other on an all-or nothing 4th-and-17 play with 36 seconds left. What was more probably more disappointing was that despite another stellar statistical defensive performance, no takeaways were produced for a second consecutive week…

• Of course, that could have been different if a key fourth-quarter forward progress whistle had not been blown. Runnin’ Bulldogs running back Ricky Rhodes was stripped of the football near his own 15-yard line, and returned for a touchdown that would have put the Bucs’ an extra point away from forging a 14-14 tie. Instead, the officials ruled that forward progress was stopped and Gardner-Webb was able to punt the football away with a seven-point lead in tow, and a long field to defend. Another key call went against CSU late in the first half, when Charles James ripped off a big punt return down the left sideline which brought the ball inside the G-W 15-yard line. James’ return could have given quarterback Richard Mounce a shot or two at the end zone and at least a field goal opportunity before intermission, but a block-in-the-back call on Mike Davis wiped out the big play and forced Coach Patrick Nix’s unit to take a knee and go into half knotted at 7-7.

• While those two whistles negated potential game-changing plays, the CSU offense had a couple of chances at momentum-swinging big-hitters that slipped just past their fingers. Mounce had several good throws dropped, and narrowly failed to hook up with Nathan Perera and Corvaughn Archie on second half deep balls which had the potential to be touchdowns. Gardner-Webb, conversely, had limited scoring opportunities but were able to punch the ball across the goal line with the help of the wild cat formation. Some good fortune – which Charleston Southern is still in search of – aided Ron Dickerson, Jr.’s cause as well, particularly on Rhodes’ decisive touchdown pass which was tipped by a Bucs’ DB only to sail right into the hands of tight-end Treymaine Schley.

• The biggest reason Mounce and company tallied only 7 points was the Gardner-Webb pass rush. In reigning Big South freshmen of the year Preston Pemasa and Matt Goods, Charleston Southern’s offensive line knew it would be tested. Back-up Maurice Dickson wreaked the most havoc, though, recording 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks as part of a swarming defensive showing which brought down Mounce behind the line of scrimmage seven times. While the final line was not pretty (14-of-39, 169 yards, TD, 2 INT), Mounce’s outing was one of the positives CSU fans can take out of the latest hard-fought defeat. Starting his first game in over four years, the redshirt junior took a beating but kept coming all day, racking up 56 yards on 28 carries. A telling statistic of Mounce’s durability was this: of the 82 plays the Bucs ran, 67 relied on the Columbia native’s right arm or legs.

• Gardner-Webb’s defensive line stole the headlines with a seven-sack afternoon, but Charleston Southern Defensive Line Coach Rashan Frost’s unit was pretty stout as well. A week after scampering for 143 yards to win Big South Offensive Player of the Week honors, Rhodes accumulated only 52 yards on 22 carries, 32 of which came on a single rush. A big and experienced offensive line yielded 2.5 tackles for loss to freshman defensive tackle James Smith, who spearheaded an effort which held the Runnin’ Bulldogs to 84 rushing yards on 41 attempts – including just 7 on 17 first half carries.

Stony Brook coasts over Coastal, PC proves a tough out against Liberty

Coach Chuck Priore’s Stony Brook Seawolves moved to 3-0 in Big South play for the third straight year with a 42-0 rout of Coastal Carolina. While the Chanticleers’ struggles have been surprising (since entering the national rankings at #20 three weeks ago, Coastal has been pounded by Liberty and Stony Brook, sandwiched around a home loss to Gardner-Webb), the Sea Wolves old-school running attack has been even more impressive. It’s not often that a team wins a game in which it goes 0-for-6 passing, but Stony Brook accomplished just that with a ground game which churned out 446 yards and five touchdowns. Miguel Maysonet scored three TD’s as part of 191-yard effort, and Brock Jackolski chipped in 193 yards and another score Coach Priore’s club thrived in the elements on the snowy afternoon. The defense was not half bad, either, yielding only 73 total yards to an explosive Coastal offense.

Presbyterian College is now 2-6 and 1-2 in league play following a 27-20 overtime loss @ Liberty on Saturday, but the Blue Hose have signaled that they are now a player in the conference after going a combined 2-20 (1-11 Big South) the previous two seasons. Playing its second contest of the year against a ranked opponent, PC was once again on the doorstep of a breakthrough win, having fallen to #9 Wofford by a 35-28 count to start the year. Wins are the ultimate objective, but there appears to be plenty of reason for optimism in Clinton.

All that sets the stage for a home bout with Stony Brook this Saturday. Tune in to the Coach Jay Mills Show tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN 910 to get reaction to the Gardner-Webb game, and a preview of a good Stony Brook team embedded in the conference title race.

Without further ado – or failed attempts at humor – here’s what stood out from the Bucs’ 38-16 loss to Big South leader Liberty this past Saturday.

“Critical Errors” Cost Bucs

Head coach Jay Mills put it perfectly in his postgame comments to the Post and Courier. “We knew we could not make critical errors, and we had to hope they would make some critical errors, and just the opposite happened,” said the ninth-year head man. CSU took advantage of some Liberty miscues to stay in the game early, something that has been a challenge for a Bucs’ team that entered play having been outscored 75-0 in the first quarter. Following a three-and-out from the offense, Thielen Smith’s defense bent but did not break as the Flames were flagged for chop block, holding, and delay of game penalties on three consecutive plays to push themselves out of field goal range. Although they did not score on the subsequent possession, Patrick Nix’s unit chewed up 6:55 of the game clock and developed an early rhythm with three first downs, including a 3rd-and-15 conversion courtesy of a pretty 25-yard hook up from Malcolm Dixon to Nathan Perera on the left sideline.

The first mistake ensued after Charleston Southern turned the ball over on downs, as Mike Brown hit Pat Kelly on a short crossing pattern over the middle that turned into a 52-yard touchdown thanks to a blown coverage. Nonetheless, Liberty entered as the No. 3 scoring offense in the nation, and Brown was bound to make some big plays at some point. Displaying their balanced attack by relying on running back Aldreakis Allen, the Flames pushed their advantage to 14-0 with a 13-play, 79-yard march that ended in a Brown bootleg touchdown pass to his backfield mate.

While the defense settled in, particularly after halftime (more on that later), it was the Bucs’ offense which enabled Liberty to blow the contest wide open. Two pick-sixes – one on the goal line with CSU threatening to close within 14-7 – eliminated any realistic shot at entering the win column for the first time of 2011. It was particularly frustrating since Dixon and company were moving the ball very efficiently against Danny Rocco’s stout 3-4 defense, anchored by 6-5, 380 lb. nose tackle Asa Chapman. Matt Bevins added a field goal as the first half clock expired, and Kevin Fogg broke several tackles to spring loose for an 82-yard return which stretched the cushion to 38-0 and could have easily deflated a young CSU squad still in search of that evasive first win. Instead of allowing things to get uglier, the Bucs responded with a spark from….

Mounce’s live arm turns it loose in eye-opening 2nd half

Before launching into praise of redshirt junior quarterback Richard Mounce’s performance in relief of Dixon, it’s important to keep perspective. The Flames were up 38-0 at the time of his entry, and Dixon too had exploited the Liberty secondary outside of the interceptions, hitting on 9-of-15 first half passes for 110 yards. As Mills mentioned in his postgame breakdown, Mounce made mistakes as well, overthrowing two balls that ended up in the hands of ball-hawking defenders keying in on the pass with a healthy lead. Still, the final numbers – and the way he produced them – were particularly impressive.

Mounce connected on 14-of-27 attempts for 193 yards and two scoring strikes, showcasing the arm strength which made him an elite pitcher at Blythewood High School before making his way to Clemson on a baseball scholarship. Those who listened to Saturday’s broadcast could hear the excitement in Jon Davis’ voice (and he does not lack in that quality, providing ample color and good humor throughout) as he noted the impressive passes which sailed from the right or left hash to the opposite sideline with accuracy and gusto. South Carolina’s 2007 Mr. Football award winner may not possess the quickness of Dixon, but he showed some deceptive speed to elude several defenders in the open field en route to a team-high 32 rushing yards on nine carries. It remains to be seen what the quarterback situation will be going forward, (tune into tonight’s Jay Mills Show at 7 p.m. on ESPN 910 to hear what coach has to say) but Mounce’s outing was encouraging and should give the Bucs a bit of a bounce as they head back on the road at Gardner-Webb this week.

Mounce’s play will make for interesting conversation on this evening’s broadcast, as will these other storylines out of the 22-point defeat to Liberty. In the interest of brevity (that can be a challenge for me, at times, if you haven’t noticed), here’s some bullet points:

• Nathan Perera set career-highs with 7 catches for 100 yards, and is stepping to the forefront of a largely inexperienced receiving corps. The 6-3, 200 lb. Orlando native can go get the ball at its highest point, and did so to out-tussle a Liberty defender and reel in a career-long 36-yard reception. The sophomore added a 25-yard grab, marking the second straight week in which he hauled in two passes over 20 yards.

• The depth of the receiving corps was also on display, with Kevin Glears, Mike Davis, and Estevan Cintron recording three receptions each. Kirby Broome chipped in two catches, highlighted by a perfectly thrown 51-yard deep ball that signified CSU’s longest play from scrimmage this season. Despite missing high on several throws, Mounce’s rapport with the wide outs was particularly impressive due to his relative low amount of reps with the first-teamers in practice, as quarterbacks coach A.J. Toscano mentioned in an engrossing postgame interview (more credit to A.J.’s insight than my own line of questioning).

• Coach Mills expected Charles James to respond in the wake of his critical fumbled punt against VMI, and the redshirt junior did just that. A year after picking off Brown – the two-time reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year – twice, James may have been even better in shutting out Chris Summers. Summers enjoys a seven-inch height advantage over the 5-10 James, but the conference leader in receptions and receiving yards per game could not shake the Jacksonville native loose. James was flagged for a pass interference which negated a pick-six on the game’s opening play, but the play set the tone for the afternoon. He was physical with the tall and rangy Walter Payton Award candidate, and even went up in the air with him on several jump-balls.

• James led the squad with a season-best nine tackles, and the Charleston Southern defense allowed only 17 points to a Liberty offense which averages over 37 a game. The absence of Brown in the second half meant the Flames were a different group offensively, but the Bucs’ performance after intermission was outstanding, as they yielded only 38 yards and zero first downs after surrendering 14 in the opening 30 minutes.

All that sets the stage for a trip to Boiling Springs, North Carolina and a meeting with Gardner-Webb this Saturday at 1:30 on Sports Radio 1450. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have dropped the Bucs’ each of the last two campaigns, and will look to do the same and generate momentum off a dramatic 26-24 upset win at Coastal Carolina this past week. Hear what Coach Mills has to say about Ron Dickerson, Jr.’s team tonight at 7 on ESPN 910 (had to get another plug in), and keep your eyes pealed for Thursday’s preview of the GW game.

Weekly Recap - May 16-22

Some tremendous things going on in the department as all of our sports continue to wind down. The baseball team beat a nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina team and ensured that they would have a top-4 seed in the upcoming tournament. As it turns out, they got the #3 seed after being picked eighth in the preseason poll! Also announced this week was the fact that
Javon Young, Tamisha Foster and the men’s 4x100m relay team will be going to the NCAA Preliminary Round
in Indiana later this week, and Amanda D’Ostroph was named to the Capital One Academic All-District first team. Rounding out the good news and sticking with golf is a top-35 finish by Jacobo Pastor at the NCAA Southeast Region, and a 23-shot victory by Coach Kory Thompson in the Charleston Women’s Amateur Tournament. Way to go Bucs! As always, it’s a great time to be a Buccaneer!

Nick Chinners has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after going 6-for-12 against Coastal Carolina. Additionally, Chinners became the first player since Derek Smith more than a year ago to homer twice in the same game.

Chinners had three extra base hits, including the two home runs, and also accounted for three RBIs in the series. Jeff Hartsell also just wrote a great feature story about Chinners in today's Post and Courier..

Also Nominated: Brantley Meier (Baseball)

Weekly Recap - May 9 - 15

As the seasons continue to wind down, we see the end of another tournament as the softball team ended the year with their championship, entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed. After upsetting and eliminating the No. 3 seed, Presbyterian, the Bucs fell to the top-ranked Radford Highlanders. The baseball team took two of three games from Presbyterian and is in the third seed after this weekend’s action with three conference games remaining in their conference tournament.

Due to a staff retreat this morning in the department, this release will be slightly abbreviated too. We mentioned baseball and softball, but would be remised if we didn’t include track, who had an excellent weekend. Tamisha Foster (triple jump) posted the best collegiate mark, as did Javon Young (100m dash). The 4x100m relay team broke the Big South and school record, winning the event in the fifth-best time on the entire eastern side of the U.S. All three, along with Patria Norman, will likely earn a bid to the NCAA Championship First Round, which will be announced later this week.

Jaren Sustar has been named this week's CSU Athlete of the Week after batting .722 (13-18) in four games last week, with four doubles, seven runs scored and four RBI.

Sustar opened his week with two hits, one double and one run at defending national champion South Carolina, and followed with a .733 clip in a Big South-series win over Presbyterian College. Sustar went 5-6 with two doubles and four runs in the series opener against the Blue Hose, and collected three hits and three RBI in game two. He concluded his week 3-4 at the plate on Sunday, and finished with a .722 on base percentage and .944 slugging percentage in helping the Buccaneers win their most Big South games (14) since the 2000 season.

Also Nominated: Kimberly Hobbs (Softball), Javon Young (Men's Track and Field)

Weekly Recap - May 2-8

Back to action this week, and it was a good weekend as the baseball team swept High Point on the road, and the softball team took two of three from regular-season champion Radford. Three track and field Lady Bucs also competed this weekend.

With back-to-back shut outs of Radford to give CSU the double-header sweep and series victory, softball pitcher Morgan Dowdy has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Dowdy did what no one in the Big South has been able to do since 2008 and that is shut out the Highlanders, and Dowdy did it for 14-straight innings as CSU won both games of the double header 3-0. The pair of victories helped CSU tie the program record for Big South wins in a season, and was the first victory over the Highlanders for CSU since the 2006 season.

Also nominated: Nick Chinners (Baseball), Megan Lombard (Softball)

Baseball @ Georgia Southern – L, 13-12
You always wonder how the team will bounce back after having a week off from competition due to finals, and the break clearly did not stifle the bats of CSU as they scored 12 runs against Georgia Southern. Nick Chinners had one hit, and with that base-knock, tied the school record for career hits. Freshman Alex Tomasovich was 5-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth. CSU scored three runs in the top of the ninth and had a two run lead, but a two-run homer sent the game into extra innings, where GSU won it in the 11th.

Baseball @ High Point – W, 5-3
The bats may not have been as hot, but behind strong pitching performances by Stew Brase and Corey Deighan, CSU got all the offense they needed, holding a 5-0 lead before HPU scored three runs in the eighth. Chinners had another hit and became the sole-leader in CSU history in career hits with 245. CSU got three hits from Jaren Sustar and two each from Brantley Meier and Walt Quattlebaum, who also scored a pair of runs.

W. Track and Field @ Bob Pollock Spring Invitational
Tamisha Foster posted a season-best in the triple jump, finishing third behind a pair of Clemson jumpers, while Deona Jones took fourth in the long jump. The only other competitor for CSU, Daisy Whitaker finished eighth the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Baseball @ High Point – W, 10-3
The bats woke back up on Saturday as the Bucs had 16 hits and scored 10 runs to take the series victory. With a tough decision whether to skip the game and attend graduation back in Charleston, the seniors chose to play, and accounted for seven of the team’s hits, led by Brantley Meier who had three hits. Jaren Sustar and Walt Quattlebaum also had three hits on the day. Ali Williams earned the victory with 4.1 innings of relief work, striking out six while walking just one and not giving up a hit. Charlie McCready earned the three-inning save.

Softball vs. Radford (DH) – W, 3-0, W, 3-0
As mentioned, Morgan Dowdy stole the show with her 14 innings of shut-out ball in the circle, but she did get a lot of help from her defense, and some timely hitting to give CSU the double header victory. Megan Lombard tied the career home run record, pounding her 20th in game two. Jessica Brock also homered in game two, accounting for two of the team’s three runs on solo homeruns. Dowdy gave up a combined seven hits on the day. With a runner on third and one out in the sixth, a liner to Jana Matthews recorded the second out, and Matthews made a great throw home to nail the runner trying to tag, ending the threat and the inning.

Softball vs. Radford – L, 3-2
Kimberly Hobbs took the circle as CSU honored its three seniors, and Hobbs pitched another gem for CSU, going eight innings with just three runs scored against her. Trailing for the first time in the series, CSU tied the game 1-1 in the fifth as a sacrifice fly by Melissa Adams scored Trea Steele from third. Both teams scored in the eighth, and a leadoff double in the ninth proved costly as later in the inning Dowdy allowed the ball to get too far inside on an intentional walk and Nichole Beall reached out and poked it into center field to score what would be the game-winning run.

What’s coming up?
May 10-11 – W. Track @ Demon Deacon Combined Event
May 11 – Baseball @ South Carolina – 7 p.m.

Weekly Recap - April 18-24

With four more Big South Championships this week (M/W Track, M Golf, W Tennis), we are officially to finals week on campus! Before we mention that, though, the good folks here at CSU hope that you and your family had a wonderful Easter celebrating the resurrection of our Savior. As I told people yesterday, I am so thankful that death has been defeated so that I can have eternal life, and I pray that you know the peace that comes with that salvation as well.

With three victories and two runner-up finishes at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Javon Young has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Young continued the CSU domination in the sprint events by winning both the 100m and 200m dashes, as well as the 4x100m relay. It is the fifth time in six years that CSU has won the 100m dash, the sixth time in a row that CSU has taken home the victory in the 4x100m relay and the seventh-straight victory in the 200m dash. Young also took on the long jump for the first time in his career and on his first jump, got out 7.31m (23-11.75) and was leading the event for nearly three rounds until teammate Lavon Allen passed him. He did not need to jump again and earned a second-place finish in the event. He rounded out his tremendous meet with a runner-up finish in the 4x400m relay.

Also Nominated - David Denlinger (M. Golf), Patria Norman (Women’s Track), Jesse Cadenhead (Baseball), Kimberly Hobbs (Softball)

April 18-20 – M. Golf @ Big South Championship – 6th
Sophomore David Denlinger had the tournament of his young career and finished fifth overall at the 2011 Big South Championship, earning All-Big South honors. Denlinger shot under par for the first time since coming to CSU. Jacobo Pastor finished 20th overall, while Jonathan Rustin claimed 23rd in his final tournament for CSU. Overall, the Bucs combined to shoot 300-297-301 for a total score of 898.

April 18 – Softball @ Winthrop – W, 10-1
For the third time against the Eagles, CSU had to come from behind, but they were able to do so in dominating fashion, using a five-run sixth inning to run-rule Winthrop in the series finale. Kimberly Hobbs earned the victory, going 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts, giving up two hits. Jessica Brock went 3-for-3 and Megan Lombard had two hits and two RBI.

April 19 – Baseball vs. The Citadel – L, 11-3
Walt Quattlebaum continued to hit the ball well, as did Alex Thomasovich, as each went 2-for-4 with a run, but late-inning runs broke open what was a 2-0 game through four innings. A combined nine runs in four innings after that is what distanced the Bulldogs and gave them the season sweep. Levi Mauldin took the loss, despite giving up just two earned runs in 3.1 innings. After Mauldin’s exit, the Bucs used five more pitchers to finally close out the game, with all but Corey Deighan giving up at least one hit.

April 20 – Softball vs. College of Charleston (StrikeOut Cancer) – W, 5-2, L, 5-3
Before the game, the Bucs honored Melissa Adams’ mother, a cancer survivor, as they held their StrikeOut Cancer game, donning pink jerseys and using pink bases. The sale of pink t-shirts raised more than $400 for cancer research in what turned out to be a tremendous event. After all the pregame festivities, CSU opened the double header with a 5-2 victory in game one. The rotation of Morgan Dowdy and Kimberly Hobbs in the circle continued to work out well as the duo combined to give up just two runs, striking out six in the victory. In game two, the strikeouts weren’t there, and with early trouble for Dowdy, she left after two innings. Hobbs finished out the game, but was charged with two runs. CSU scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh inning, and had the tying-run in scoring position, but the Bucs couldn’t get one more hit and split the DH with the Cougars.

April 21-23 – Track and Field @ Big South Championship – 3rd/3rd
The Bucs had four individual Big South Champions on the men’s side, while the programs combined to break three school records at the meet. Both the men’s and the women’s teams finished third in the team race, the men missing second by a mere 2.5 points. Javon Young won the 100m and 200m dash events, as well as the 4x100m relay, while Patria Norman earned Most Outstanding Field Performer after finishing second in the heptathlon, winning the long jump with a school record mark, finishing fourth in the shot put and earning all-conference honors as part of the 4x100m relay.

April 21-23 – Tennis vs. GWU @ Big South Championship – L, 4-3
Coming off an injury that had her sidelined for a couple of matches, Olga Makhova returned, and looked to be alright with a doubles victory with Marija Dzakovic. It was the only victory in doubles, though, and CSU found themselves quickly in a 1-0 hole. Dzakovic, Pletcher and Alia Nour won their singles matches, so it came down to the wire, but CSU couldn’t get that final victory to advance, and their season concluded at 8-11, due to a tough non-conference schedule.

April 22-23 – Softball vs. Gardner-Webb – L, 3-2, L, 1-0, W, 7-4
Game one came after a crazy day of sitting around waiting on the weather, and what was originally a double header starting at two, ended with a halted game in the bottom of the seventh inning, after starting game one at approximately 6 p.m. Trailing 1-0 with darkness looming, CSU tied the game on an Ari Tedesco single in the seventh, prompting the umpires to call the game due to darkness, forcing the teams to come back all even at 1-1 on Saturday. After loading the bases in the seventh, CSU could not score the winning run, and an error in the 8th proved costly as the Bulldogs took game one, 3-2. Game two was a pitcher’s duel as well as the Bucs failed to score a run and lost 1-0. Finally in game three the offense showed up for CSU as they posted seven runs. Erin Kegley went 3-for-3, while Megan Lombard had a pair of hits and an RBI. CSU used a six-run sixth to come from behind to claim the victory and earn the split of the double header.

April 22-23 – Baseball @ Winthrop – L, 3-2, W, 7-6, W, 7-3
Stew Brase did what few pitchers can, and went the complete game, even into extra innings, giving up just one earned run in the 9.2-inning outing. Brantley Meier and Tom Burkett each had a couple of hits in the day. The two teams came back the next day for a double header to avoid playing on Easter Sunday. Two more solid outings on the mound led the Bucs to a DH sweep and series victory over Winthrop on Saturday. Patrick Dolan earned the victory in game one, while Jesse Cadenhead won game two with his second complete game of the year and the second for CSU in the series.

Weekly Recap - April 11-17

While students focus on their last week of classes before final exams, women’s golf wrapped up their 2011 season, and we have four more teams (men’s and women’s track, men’s golf, women’s tennis) facing their Big South Championship in the coming week. Good luck to all of them and GO BUCS!

With 12 strikeouts in six innings of relief, senior pitcher Kimberly Hobbs has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week.

Hobbs came into the game in relief in both games of the double-header against Winthrop, earning a win and a save on the day. She struck out a total of 12 batters, including seven in three innings in game one to earn the save. In game two, she held the Eagles without a hit and struck out five to earn the victory on a late CSU run. The 12 strikeouts puts her at 106 for the year, and along with Morgan Dowdy’s strikeout total, marks the first time in CSU history that two pitchers have recorded more than 100 strikeouts in the same season. Hobbs now leads the Big South in strikeouts, followed by Dowdy who is in second place.

Also Nominated - Walt Quattlebaum (Baseball), Jacobo Pastor (M. Golf)

April 11-12 – M. Golf @ Wofford/Coca Cola Invitational – 4th
Led by Jacobo Pastor’s 210 and individual championship, the Bucs finished fourth as a team in the two-day tournament. It is the second victory of the year for Pastor, who also won the 2011 Charleston Shootout. The team’s +12 total put them fourth overall, and was the best score of the spring semester, and the second best of the year. Jonathan Rustin shot 215 to finish ninth after carding 11 birdies and two eagles.

April 11-13 – W. Golf @ Big South Championship – 7th
Poised to shock the conference in second place after day one, the rest of the tough Big South field caught up to the Lady Bucs, with CSU finishing seventh overall. Torey Johnson came on strong late in the season, and led the team at the championship with an 11th-place finish of 235. Amanda D’Ostroph tied for 13th at 237 and Vanessa Jay shot 244 for 25th after shooting her lowest score of the season. Jordan Hollinshead finished 28th and Katelyn Bensch shot 253 to finish 37th overall.

April 12 – W. Tennis @ East Carolina – L, 6-1
In a match that was forced indoors because of weather, the home team got the best of CSU, 6-1. Only Marija Dzakovic was able to win her singles match at flight two, taking the 6-3, 6-3 victory. Olga Makhova retired in the middle of the first set, and Brooke Pletcher took her opponent to three sets, but eventually fell as well.

April 12 – Baseball vs. College of Charleston – L, 10-9
The CSU football team showed up with their “Rally Helmets” on and spurred a comeback in the ninth inning, but the tying runner was stranded on third base as CSU fell 10-9. After three innings, it was an 8-0 deficit for CSU, and the Bucs climbed back in the game, trailing 10-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. Walt Quattlebaum had three hits and three RBI on the day to lead CSU.

April 13 – Baseball @ College of Charleston – W, 4-3
A day after a rally fell short, the Bucs took advantage of a throwing error and Ben Qualkinbush scored from second to give CSU the lead in the top of the ninth inning. From there, Charlie McCready pitched lights out in the bottom half, sitting down all three in order to get the save. It was the first win over the Cougars since the 2007 season. Nick Chinners went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Tom Burkett was 2-for-5 with a run.

April 13 – Softball @ Coastal Carolina – L, 4-1
Looking for the sweep in an odd format, the Bucs travelled to Coastal Carolina for the third and final game of the Big South series. CSU put themselves in a position to win, tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, but after a call did not go the way CSU thought it should have, the Bucs gave up a three-run, walk-off homerun in the bottom of the inning.

April 15-17 – Baseball vs. VMI – L, 11-0, L, 15-12, L, 9-1
It was a tough weekend for the Bucs, as the dropped three games to the Keydets of VMI. In games one and three, CSU struggled to find any offense, and after scoring eight runs in one inning of game two, let the lead slip away late in the game. It was just the second time this year that CSU has been swept in a Big South Series (Liberty). CSU had four errors in game three, leading to five unearned runs in the contest.

April 16 – Memorial Spring FB Game – Defense 29 – Offense 23
The defense scored with 11 tackles-for-loss and a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown as they downed the offense for the first time since 2008. At halftime of the game, the team gave out their most-improved awards, the Servant Leadership Award was presented to Chuck Kelly, and the 2011 Edward A. Gadson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Zac Johnston.

Most Improved:
DL – Coril Joseph
LB – Michael Chocholousek

OL – Jeff Hartung
TE – Nathan Prater

RB – Teddy Allen
Distinguished Service Award

2011 Edward A. Gadson Memorial Scholarship

April 17 – Softball @ Winthrop (DH) – W, 5-3, W, 2-1
Relief pitching was the name of the game as Kimberly Hobbs came into the game in relief in both games, striking out 12 batters in a combined six innings of work. In doing so, her and Morgan Dowdy became the first duo in CSU history to record 100 strikeouts in the same season. Erin Kegly had a pair of hits, while Megan Lombard had a three-run homer for her only hit of the day. In game two, Jessica Brock had three hits and an RBI, while Erin Kegley earned the other RBI on a bases-loaded walk that forced in the winning run.

Weekly Recap - April 4-10

A record fell on the track, tennis hosted (and won!) their senior day and the baseball team took another Big South series, this time getting it done on the road.

Jermal McClendon has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after setting a school record and winning the 400m hurdles at the Duke Invitational.

McClendon ran 52.10 in the hurdles to break Doug Hazel’s mark of 52.50, which he set back in 1997. The time qualified McClendon for USATF Junior Nationals, and marked the top time run in the Big South this year. It is the second school record that McClendon has put his name on, tying the indoor high jump record, clearing 2.04m (6-8.25).

Also Nominated - Patrick Dolan (Baseball), Brook Pletcher (W. Tennis)

April 4 – Softball vs. Coastal Carolina – W, 9-1, 6-2
Game one took just six innings to decide, as Trea Steele knocked in a run on a bases-loaded single to put CSU up 9-1. Kimberly Hobbs pitched extremely well, getting the complete-game victory with five hits and one run given up. More importantly, she finally got the run support she needed, and then some. CSU had 12 hits on the day with 11 singles and a triple by Jana Matthews, who scored three times. Jessica Brock and Stephanie Sbardella each had a pair of RBI, while that pair, along with Steele and Erin Kegley, each had multiple hits in the first game. In game two, CSU used a four-run second inning to give Morgan Dowdy a cushion in the circle, as she finished off the double-header sweep by giving up just two runs on six hits. CSU had just five hits, but took advantage of three walks and two CCU errors as they scored six runs. Megan Lombard had two hits and four RBI on the day, while Hayes Holdsworth scored a pair of runs.

April 5 – Softball @ South Carolina – L, 12-4
A six-run fifth inning pushed South Carolina past CSU a day after the DH sweep. Trailing big, CSU cut the lead to 6-4, but the game ended early as they failed to stop the bleeding in the fifth inning. Jana Matthews and Jessica Brock each hit a home run, making half of the team’s four hits, bombs. Trea Steele had scored a run and had another RBI, while Melissa Adams accounted for the team’s fourth run.

April 5 – Baseball @ Georgia – L, 8-1
The CSU defense held #30 Georgia at bay for a while, including four scoreless innings, but the offensive rhythm was not there as the Bucs managed just one run. Derek Smith led the Buccaneer effort, going 1-for-3 and scoring the team’s lone run. Walt Quattlebaum went 1-for-4 to earn the RBI on Smith’s run, while Jaren Sustar went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases. Ali Williams got the start and took the loss, giving up five runs and six hits while striking out two in 2.0 innings. Brennan Dorsett came in to relieve Williams, and gave up two runs off of five hits in 5.0 innings. Dorsett also struck out three and walked none.

April 4-5 – W. Golf @ World Golf Village Intercollegiate – 8th
The tournament was cut short due to rain, putting CSU in eighth place with a 646 team score. Torey Johnson had an excellent tournament, finishing 12th overall, while all five Bucs finished in the top 50 of the field. Daytona State won the tournament after shooting an impressive 611.

April 6 – W. Tennis @ #68 UNC Wilmington – L, 6-1
Once again, Olga Makhova did what she was supposed to and led the team from the #1 singles spot. Unfortunately, she was the lone victor on the day as CSU faced another nationally-ranked team. All six singles matches went down in straight sets, including Makhova’s 6-3, 6-1 victory.

April 6 – Baseball @ Georgia – L, 3-2
CSU scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning and looked like they would get back even or take the lead, but five UGA relievers combined to shut down the Bucs, striking out six and giving up just three hits. Jaren Sustar and Brian Welch each had a pair of hits and a run scored in the contest, while Cody Austin and Alex Thomasovich tallied the RBIs on the day.

April 6-9 – W. Track @ Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays
Only one Lady Buccaneer took to the track at Texas, as Patria Norman competed in the heptathlon in preparation for the 2011 Big South Championships. Norman finished the two-day competition in 21st place with 4490 points.

April 8-9 – Track @ Duke Invitational
There were plenty of strong performances, including a fifth-place finish by Tamisha Foster in the triple jump. Deona Jones finished six in the long jump as CSU placed three in the top-15 of the event. On the men’s side, Rozzie Johnson and the 4x400m relay team finished fourth, while Jermal McClendon won the 400m hurdles and broke a 14-year-old school record in the process. The freshman already tied the indoor school record in the high jump.

April 8-9 – Softball @ Liberty – W, 6-2, L, 9-1, L, 4-1
CSU scored more in the second inning of game one (5) than they did the rest of the three-game series, dropping the Big South series 2-1 to Liberty. Morgan Dowdy earned the victory in game one, while Erin Kegley had a pair of hits, including a double. In game two, Kegley again posted two hits, but only Courtney Konyk crossed the plate as Liberty scored nine runs on nine hits. Trying to salvage the series, CSU cut the LU lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning of game three, but surrendered two runs in the fifth to fall 4-1. Dowdy took the loss, while Hobbs came in and closed the door, giving up just one hit in the final inning of the game.

April 8-10 – Baseball @ Gardner-Webb – L, 11-0, W, 5-2, W, 6-3
The Bucs did not get the start they wanted on the road against GWU, despite a pair of hits from Nick Chinners, who returned to the lineup after missing five games with a hand injury. Stew Brase (3-4) took the loss, giving up eight total runs and five earned runs off of eight hits in 3.0 innings. Kyle Ward threw 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out two batters. The Bucs rebounded from the loss to take the series, sparked by Patrick Dolan’s nine strikeout performance on Saturday. Charlie McCready came in and closed the game out, continuing to drop his ERA by not giving up a run. Derek Smith got it done on Sunday with two runs and two RBI, while McCready came back into the game and earned the victory pitching 1.1 innings, after Jesse Cadenhead left after 4.2 innings and giving up three runs. Ali Williams earned the save, going 1.1 innings without giving up a hit.

April 9 – W. Tennis vs. Campbell – W, 5-2
CSU maintained its .500 record with a victory on senior day, honoring the seniors in the process as both seniors (Brooke Pletcher and Angie Torres) were able to pick up singles victories on the day. Pletcher also combined with freshman Alia Nour to win their doubles match. CSU won five of the six singles matches, including straight-set victories by Olga Makhova (#1), Nour (#4), Alexandra Walters (#5) and Torres (#6).

April 10 – Softball @ Longwood – L, 7-5, L, 3-1
Their fourth and fifth games in three days, CSU dropped a pair of games at Longwood, despite out-hitting the Lancers in both games. The Bucs had four extra base hits, and nine different Bucs had a hit, but the home team found just enough run support to take the victory. In game two, it was a homer, an RBI single and a wild pitch that allowed the Lancers to take the 3-1 victory after CSU and Morgan Dowdy limited them to just three hits on the day. Megan Lombard had two hits and scored the team’s only run on a homerun to start the game.

Weekly Recap - March 28 - April 3

Off to their best start in more than a decade, the baseball team got two big wins over UNC Asheville this weekend to highlight action in Buccaneer Land this week.

Charlie McCready has been named this week’s CSU athlete of the Week after posting 5.2 innings of scoreless relief for the baseball team this week.

McCready’s longest outing this week was five innings against UNC Asheville to preserve the shutout victory in game two. Entering this week, McCready was tied for first in the entire nation in ERA with a 0.36, dropping that to 0.29 with his work this week. It is expected that he will be all alone atop the leader board when the new rankings come out Monday afternoon.

Also Nominated - Walt Quattlebaum (Baseball), Lavon Allen (M. Track and Field), Andrew King (Men’s Track and Field), Marija Dzakovic (W. Tennis)

March 29- Baseball @ The Citadel – L, 12-5
One bad inning, a five-run sixth, broke open a tie game and allowed the Bulldogs to power past CSU. The top of the order got it done for CSU as the top five all had at least one hit, with Nick Chinners leading the way with three hits. Brantley Meier and Jaren Sustar each had a pair of hits. Anthony Markham was charged with seven runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work and took the loss for CSU.

March 30 – Baseball @ Furman – W, 14-4
Unsure of if they would even play with rains pounding South Carolina, the Bucs did make the trip up to Furman and are glad they did after coming away with a 14-4 win. Kyle Ward picked up his first win of his career, as CSU this time had a five running inning to distance themselves. Walt Quattlebaum had three hits, as did Brantley Meier and Alex Thomasovich.

March 31 – W. Tennis @ UNC Greensboro – L, 5-1
In a match that was forced indoors, CSU faced a conference-leader for the second time in as many weeks as they took on SoCon leader UNCG. Marija Dzakovic claimed the only victory of the day for CSU at the #2 flight with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 victory. The #6 flight was left unfinished with CSU leading it in the third.

April 1-2 – M. Track and Field @ Pepsi Florida Relays
The relay team finished 10th in the nation, while Javon Young and Lavon Allen finished in the top five in their respective events to highlight the CSU action at the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays, one of the most prestigious and competitive meets in the nation. Additionally, Andrew King broke 15 minutes in the 5,000m run, his best time of the year.

April 1 – Softball vs. PC (DH) – L, 2-1, W, 7-2
Struggling against PC’s ace, the Bucs scored one in the first game but couldn’t overcome two early runs given up in the first inning and dropped the opening game of the series. They rebounded and took advantage of walks in game two, winning 7-2 in a game that was never in doubt. CSU walked 15 times in game two, while CSU pitcher Kimberly Hobbs was on point, striking out a career-high 11 batters to hold PC down.

April 1 – Baseball vs. Asheville – L, 9-2
For the fourth time this year, a pitcher went the distance against CSU, while the Bulldogs’ bats got hot late against the Bucs. Tied 2-2 going into the eighth, Asheville exploded for four runs in the eighth and added three more in the ninth to take a tight game and make it look like a blowout. Stew Brase took the loss for CSU pitching 7.2 innings, with the first seven being stellar before seemingly running out of gas late. Offensively, CSU had just five hits, with no one player recording more than one hit.

April 2 – Softball vs. PC – L, 2-0
A sacrifice fly that scored two runs was the only offense for either team in the series finale between the Bucs and Blue Hose. Again Hobbs gave CSU a solid outing in the circle, but Leslie Hensley got her second victory over CSU, striking out seven CSU hitters without giving up a walk, and then drove in both PC runs. Trea Steele had a pair of hits and an outstanding game in the field for CSU to lead the way offensively.

April 2 – W. Tennis @ Asheville – W, 6-1
Back to Big South play, the Bucs moved to 4-2 in the conference with a 6-1 win over Asheville. With a forfeit at the #6 singles flight and #2 doubles flight, the Bucs made sure those would not provide an excuse as they dominated the other matches, winning both doubles matches and four of the five singles competitions.

April 2 – Baseball vs. Asheville – W, 6-0
Patrick Dolan and Charlie McCready combined to pitch a shutout for CSU, while Walt Quattlebaum was a homer shy of the cycle to lead the CSU offense. Dolan went 4.0 innings with three strick outs and just one hit, while McCready came in and pitched the final five innings with 12 strikeouts. Brantley Meier had a pair of hits, while Jaren Sustar and Matt Still each had a pair of RBI on the day.

April 3 – Baseball vs. Asheville – W, 7-5
The game went back and forth, with the lead changing three times, but CSU had late runs in the seventh and eighth innings and held off the Bulldogs to clinch the series victory, 2-1. Matt Still had three hits, including a two-run homer in the eighth that sealed the victory for CSU. Alex Thomasovich had a pair of RBI in the seventh, the final two runs in a three-run inning that gave CSU a 5-4 lead at the time. The final UNCA run would not come until the top of the ninth.

Weekly Recap - March 21 - 27

Plenty of good performances again this week for CSU as the softball team got a couple of solid nonconference victories, and the baseball team got a sweep of Radford. The women’s tennis team handled PC and the track and field programs performed extremely well at the South Carolina Weems Baskin meet. With a complete-game victory on Saturday, Jesse Cadenhead has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week. Despite having to pitch a day earlier than expected after the threat of rain moved Sunday’s game to the second half of a Saturday double-header, Cadenhead struck out nine batters in the second complete game of the season for CSU. He scattered nine hits and gave up just one run as he helped the Bucs earn the first Big South sweep since the 2005 season. He had one pick off and did not walk a single batter in the victory. Also Nominated - Tom Burkett (Baseball), Olga Makhova (W. Tennis), Kimberly Hobbs (Softball), Jana Matthews (Softball), Breeann Guerra (W. Track and Field), Rozzie Johnson (Men’s Track and Field) March 22 – Baseball vs. Coppin State – W, 11-1 Anthony Markham allowed just two hits in seven innings of work to help push CSU past Coppin State, 11-1. Nick Chinners was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. His lone hit was a double, moving him into a tie for fourth place in CSU’s all-time records for career doubles with 41. Leadoff hitter Tom Burkett was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Blake Hunt was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. March 22 – Softball @ Campbell – L, 0-2, W, 2-0 CSU had five hits but could not manufacture a run in the first game as Morgan Dowdy did all she could giving up just four hits in six innings of work. Megan Lombard had two of the five hits for CSU, while Jana Matthews, Trea Steele and Hayes Holdsworth had the other three. In game two, the Bucs had eight hits, including doubles by Kristin Kelleher, Erin Kegley and Jana Matthews as the Bucs got just enough offense for the victory. Kimberly Hobbs gave up four hits, but did not allow a run, striking out nine batters in the victory. March 24 – Softball vs. Elon – W, 5-4, L, 0-6 After giving up a 3-run lead in the top of the seventh inning, Jana Matthews responded with a walk-off home run to give CSU a thrilling victory in game one of the double header against Elon. Matthews finished the game 3-4 with two runs and three RBI after hitting her fifth homer of the year, while Melanie Stickney was 2-2 with a run and an RBI. The bats fell silent in game two as CSU had the Bucs’ only base hit with a single in the third inning. Trea Steele reached twice after getting hit by two pitches, while Matthews was hit once to account for the only base runners for CSU. Kimberly Hobbs pitched well for most of the game but finished with five runs given up in six innings of work. March 25 – Softball vs. Elon – L, 6-4 The third and final game of the series took 10 innings to finish as Elon scored three runs in the 10th to take a 6-4 victory. Elon had 16 hits in the game, but the CSU defense did a good job of forcing them to strand 13 runners. Hayes Holdsworth earned her first two-hit game of the season, drove in a run and scored once. Jessica Brock went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Melanie Stickney and Megan Lombard added one RBI apiece, with Lombard’s RBI coming via a home run. March 25 – W. Tennis vs. Winthrop – L, 7-0 The doubles-duo of Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic won 8-6 at the number one flight, but it was the lone victory on the day for CSU as they fell to a nationally-ranked Winthrop team. Makhova took her opponent to three sets, falling 10-8 in the third set, while Alia Nour also took her opponent to the third before falling. March 25 – Baseball vs. Radford – W, 12-6 CSU got plenty of production out of the top of the lineup as Brantley Meier, Tom Burkett and Nick Chinners accounted for eight of the team’s 12 hits, and six of the 12 runs scored in the 12-6 victory. The comfortable victory allowed CSU to use just two pitchers as Stew Brase picked up the victory with Charlie McCready earning the save on four innings of work after giving up just three hits and no runs. March 26 – W. Tennis vs. Presbyterian – W, 6-1 After struggling against Winthrop, the tennis team got back on the right track with a dominant victory over Presbyterian College. CSU swept through the doubles competition and earned victories at all but one singles position to earn the victory. Olga Makhova, Alia Nour, Angie Torres and Alexandra Walters each earned straight-set victories at their respective flights. March 26 – Track and Field @ Weems Baskin Adrienne Cuff finished fourth and Heidi Dean finish fifth in the steeplechase, while Deona Jones claimed fifth in the long jump to highlight CSU’s women at the Weems Baskin. On the men’s side, Rozzie Johnson, Andrew King and Avery Coe all carded runner-up finishes, while Lavon Allen, the 4x100m relay team, Chris Seigler, Michael Bailey and Dantwan Spreads all finished in the top-5 in their respective events. March 26 – Baseball vs. Radford – W, 5-4, W, 3-1 With bad weather in the area, the Bucs were forced to play a double header against Radford on Saturday, earning the double header, and series, sweep. Jesse Cadenhead pitched a complete-game gem in game two, holding Radford to just one run as CSU finished off the series. In the first game, it was a bases-loaded ground ball by Tom Burkett that gave CSU the victory as his speed put the pressure on the short stop, who made and errant throw and allowed the winning run to cross. Weekly Recap - March 14-20

Hopefully everyone had a great spring break. Things were quiet around campus with everyone out enjoying the beautiful weather, and hopefully getting some much-needed rest before the final stretch of the semester.

With a 3-0 singles record and a 3-1 doubles record this week, women’s tennis player Olga Makhova has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week.

With four matches this week, Makhova paired with Marija Dzakovic at the top flight in doubles play, as the team posted victories in all but one match, including a dominant 8-1 victory over Jacksonville State and 8-2 victory over Radford. Additionaly, Makhova continued her singles winning streak at the number one flight, moving it to six-straight matches with three victories this week, sitting out singles play against Jacksonville State. Two of her victories came in straight sets as she took down Radford’s top player 6-1, 6-2 to help CSU to the team victory.

Also Nominated - Jacobo Pastor (M. Golf), Stew Brase (Baseball)

March 13-14 – W. Golf @ Administaff Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate – 17th place
The Lady Bucs snapped out of their slump and improved 18 shots in the final round, taking 17th-place overall in the tournament. After struggling in the first two rounds, Amanda D’Ostroph alone improved nine shots to move up 30 places and finish 36th overall.

March 13-14 – M. Golf @ General Hackler – 14th place
In a loaded field, the Bucs held their own and finished 14th, edging out PC and Gardner-Webb, who finished right behind them in the tournament. Jacobo Pastor finished 19th, while Brandon Caddow-Young finished 46th with one of his best tournaments of the year. After a tough first two rounds, David Denlinger regrouped to shoot a 75 in the final round and move up to 51st place.

March 14 – W. Tennis vs. Jacksonville State – W, 6-1
It was a dominant effort by the Bucs as they won all three doubles matches (8-1, 8-1, 8-5) and all but one singles match en route to a 6-1 victory. It was the first home match in more than two weeks for CSU and part two of a three-day stretch in which the Lady Bucs had a match. Brooke Pletcher moved up and played at the #1 flight, earning a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory to lead the charge. Out of the five singles victories, four of them came in straight sets, with Alexandra Walters (#6) tying Pletcher for the most dominant victory on the day with 6-2, 6-0 scores.

March 14 – Baseball vs. Fordham – L, 10-7
It took 12 innings to decide who would win the fourth and final game of a series between Fordham and CSU. In the end, the visitors would score three runs in the top of the 12th and hold on to split the series at 2-2. CSU had 12 hits, including three each by Jaren Sustar and Derek Smith, and even led 7-4 in the top of the ninth inning, but couldn’t close things out. In the end, Fordham scored in just three innings, tying the game at 4-4 and 7-7, before taking the 10-7 victory.

March 15 – Baseball @ Savannah State – L, 8-7
Errors were the story of the game, as the Bucs committed five of them and again surrendered a late lead, falling 8-7 on the road at Savannah State. The bats continued to be hot for CSU as all but one starter had a hit, but four runs in the seventh inning put the Tigers on top. George Schaefer, Matt Witt and Tyler Vick combined to close out the game without giving up a hit, but the damage had already been done.

March 15 – W. Tennis vs. Southern Illinois – W, 5-2
The final in the three-games-in-three-days stretch, the Bucs won again, taking down Southern Illinois, 5-2. CSU won both doubles matches, and three singles matches, also taking advantage of a forfeit at the #6 flight to even the Lady Bucs’ season record at 4-4. Olga Makhova made quick work of the reigning MVC freshman of the year 6-2, 6-3 at the top spot, while Marija Dzakovic (#3) and Susita Das (#5) also got straight-set victories.

March 15 – Softball @ East Carolina – L, 4-0, L, 3-0
The pitching was on par, but CSU got no production out of the bats against a very solid East Carolina team. Although you would like to hold the opposition down a little more than 4 and 3 runs, respectively, the frustration at the plate no doubt led to some frustration in the field. Failing to get a single hit in game one, the Bucs did have three base runners with a hit-by-pitch, a walk and an error, but couldn’t manufacture a run. In game two, Megan Lombard, Jessica Brock and Melissa Adams each had a hit, with Lombard pounding a double, but again, the Bucs failed to get the runners around to score.

March 16 – Baseball @ USC Upstate – W, 15-13
If you weren’t following along, you might not believe what happened. After trailing 8-0 after two innings, the Bucs came all the way back and scored a combined seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to earn the road victory. Brennan Dorsett ended up getting the win, while Jesse Cadenhead got his first save of the year on the mound. CSU had a total of 18 hits and 14 RBI with Nick Chinners tallying three hits and four RBI, while Walt Quattlebaum had four hits on the day.

March 18-20 – M. Golf @ Furman Intercollegiate – 10th
Jacobo Pastor finished 10th overall, and the team shot a second-round 290 to finish 10th as a team. In addition to Pastor’s outstanding tournament, Jonathan Rustin helped the team on day two with a team-best 69 and finished third on the team, just behind David Denlinger, who finished 34th after shooting 74-72-75. The Bucs tied with Winthrop and just ahead of UNC Wilmington in the team standings.

March 18- Baseball @ Liberty-L, 2-1
A pitcher’s duel to the fullest extent, both teams used just one pitcher in the game, with Liberty’s Linza getting the best of the matchup against Stew Brase. CSU held a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Liberty found a way to scratch out a pair of runs in the late innings to take the victory in the opening game of the series. Jaren Sustar, Matt Still and Blake Hung each had a pair of hits, with Sustar scoring the lone run for CSU.

March 19- Baseball @ Liberty – L, 5-1
Liberty got a complete game for the second day in a row, limiting the Bucs to one run on five hits, and posted two big innings after loading the bases in the fourth and seventh innings to take the victory. Again, CSU led 1-0 early on, but couldn’t hold off the Flames. Matt Still scored the only run on a Cody Austin single to account for the lone CSU run.

March 19- W. Tennis @ Liberty – L, 4-3
It came down to the doubles point as it so often does, and Liberty had claimed two of the three matches, with all three posting an identical 8-5 score. Olga Makhova, Marija Dzakovic and reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Alia Nour each won their singles matches, but the Lady Bucs dropped their first Big South contest of the year, evening their Big South record at 1-1.

March 20- Baseball @ Liberty – L, 5-2
Tom Burkett benefited from a move up to the leadoff spot in the order, reaching base all four times at the plate, including two hits and twice being hit by a pitch. He would come around to score once and tallied one RBI. Brantley Meier also had two hits and an RBI on the day, as the top pair in the order accounted for two-thirds of the team’s hits. Jesse Cadenhead took the loss after going 6.0 innings and striking out three, while Liberty got the third-straight complete game by their pitcher, using just three total pitchers in the three-game series.

March 20 – W. Tennis @ Radford W, 4-3
Knowing the previous match came down to the doubles point, the Lady Bucs posted a dominant sweep in the doubles on Sunday, winning 8-2, 8-5 and 8-1. Additionally, Olga Makhova, Alia Nour and Alexandra Walters posted singles victories at the 1,4 and 6 spots, respectively, to gives CSU a 5-5 overall record and a 2-1 Big South record.

Weekly Recap - March 7 - 13

Highlighting this week’s action at CSU was the end of the winter seasons with an appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, and the Big South Women’s Basketball Tournament. We also had the start of the outdoor track and field season, and the start of spring football practice, and you can see Coach Jay Mills’ thoughts here.

Sophomore third baseman Jaren Sustar has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week after having a career-week for the Bucs.

In the first game of the week, Sustar hit the first homerun of his CSU career, doing it in style with a grand slam against USC Upstate. Sustar had one other RBI, giving him five for the day and set a new career high with five RBI in one game. The next game, Sustar did exactly what the coaches wanted and gave himself up to advance the runner every time at the plate. He finished the day 0-0 in the box score, but had four sacrifice bunts, tying the NCAA single-game record. Sustar went on to go 3-for-4 on Saturday in a victory over Fordham and added another hit on Sunday.

Also Nominated - Jessica Brock (Softball), Katie Tull (WBB), Rozzie Johnson (Men’s Track), Javon Young (Men’s Track), Olga Makhova (W. Tennis)

March 6-8 – W. Golf @ Myrtle Beach Spring Classic – 14th
It was a tough tournament for CSU and they finished 14th overall, edging out High Point in the end. With an extremely tough field, Amanda D’Ostroph finished 37th overall and was the highest finisher of the Big South schools in the event. The Lady Bucs show 320 and 322 in the first two rounds of the tournament and were right in the thick of things before stumbling with a 340 team score in the third and final round.

March 7 – WBB vs. Winthrop – W, 70-55
After the emotions proved too much on senior night, the seniors responded in a big way in their final home game of the year, beating Winthrop 70-55 in a game that was never really in doubt, with the Bucs leading by as many as 20 for most of the game. Katie Tull broke her own single season 3point record, and scored 24 points, while Kelsey Wasmer added 23, giving the duo 47 points, nearly outscoring Winthrop by themselves. Lakeitha Also was kept off the boards, but did score 10 points for CSU and nearly everyone who saw action in the game scored at least one basket.

March 9 – Baseball vs. USC Upstate – L, 13-10
A late rally by Upstate proved too much for the Bucs as they gave up five runs in the ninth inning, and eight runs in the final two innings, the first real hiccup for the bullpen this season after starting the year as one of the team’s strengths. On a bright note, Jaren Sustar hit his first career home run, and in spectacular fashion as he blasted a grand slam in the process … but his best accomplishment came later in the week. Tom Burkett finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. The game also chewed up the relievers for CSU as only two pitchers (the starter, McCready 3.0, and Ali Williams 1.2) got through more than one inning, forcing the Bucs to use eight total pitchers in the loss.

March 9 – Softball vs. Furman – W, 7-5, W, 10-5
Despite a solid start to the year, it was the first double header sweep of the season for CSU, playing mostly tournaments thus far. After taking a 5-2 lead in game one, the Bucs had plenty of base runners but failed to get the timely hits, allowing Furman to climb back in and tie the game in the top of the sixth. Kristen Kelleher and Jessica Brock provided RBI doubles in the bottom of the inning and CSU held on in the seventh to win the first contest. Game two was a different story as CSU trailed 4-0 early, but scored six runs in the third inning to come back and take the lead 8-5. They would add a couple more insurance runs, but wouldn’t need them as Morgan Dowdy, who came into the game in relief, and allowed just two hits the rest of the game.

March 11 – Track and Field @ NCAA Indoor Championships
For the second year in a row, Javon Young qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Unfortunately, for the second year he is ousted in the first round after not getting the performances he wanted. According to Coach Langford, Young did not get the start he wanted in the 60m dash and the competition was just too good to make up any ground on. In the 200m dash, he got the start he wanted but seemingly ran out of gas down the stretch. He is still expected to earn All-American honors, which will be announced later in the week.

March 11 – Track and Field @ Palmetto Classic
The men’s team posted four victories in the opening meet of the 2011 outdoor track and field season. Andrew King won the 5,000m run with a new meet record, Jermal McClendon won the long jump, Avery Coe won the triple jump and Zach Pociatek won the hammer throw, and that was without competing in any sprint events, proving there are big things to come for the Bucs this season. For the women, Breeann Guerra won the discus and Tia Haberham won the hammer throw, leading a top-four sweep by the Lady Bucs in the event.

March 11 – WBB vs. High Point (Big South Championship) – L, 77-49
When you play the host school, you never really know what you are going to get. Unfortunately for the Bucs, they got the absolute best shot from the High Point and the careers of four senior Bucs came to an end in disappointing fashion. You look for a hot start to take the crowd out of the game, and it was a hot start for the wrong team as HPU opened an 8-0 lead to start the game. Kelsey Wasmer had 15 points, Katie Tull had 12, but CSU had no answer for the Panthers, who put four of their starting five in double figures. We do want to mention our gratitude for the four seniors (Wasmer, Tull, Lydia Johnson and Abby Poole), who have given their hearts and souls to this school over the last four years, and brought the program to a new level. Even though this season didn’t go exactly as they wanted, we are so thankful for their careers. I have no doubt that all four will have an extremely bright future, whether they continue to play basketball or enter their chosen career field.

March 11 – Baseball vs. Fordham – W, 4-3
Stew Brase gave a tremendous performance on the mound, going 7.0 innings and striking out five while walking just one to earn the victory. Stealing the headlines, though, was Jaren Sustar, who did exactly what you would hope from your #2 hitter, accepting the call to sacrifice all four at bats on the day. A quick look at the box score and Sustar shows up 0-0, but he had four sacrifice bunts, tying the NCAA record for sac bunts in a single game. The bunts directly led to all four runs for the Bucs, too as they proved the ability to manufacture runs.

March 11-12 – Softball @ NC State Tournament – 1-3 record
The Bucs opened the Wolfpack Challenge with a 6-3 victory over Maine, thanks in large part to Morgan Dowdy and her strong pitching in relief, keeping the Black Bears without a hit in the final 6.2 innings. Starter Kimberly Hobbs gave up just one hit, but left the game with a no-decision. Stephanie Sbardella and Megan Lombard each had two hits, while Jessica Brock had a three-run homerun in the seventh inning. Game two was not as positive for CSU as they surrendered eight runs in the middle innings and then had a rally fall short in the end, losing 11-8 to James Madison. Jana Matthews had five RBI as she had a home run, while Erin Kegley also blasted one out of the park. On day two, Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead over the Bucs. Kristen Kelleher had a pair of hits, but the Bucs had three errors in the game and were out-hit 14-6. CSU finally found themselves back on top on the scoreboard in the final game of the tournament against Fairfield, as they led 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, but late runs by the Stags ruined an excellent outing by Dowdy (no-hitter through five innings) and gave Fairfield the victory.

March 12 – Track and Field @ CCU Invitational
Rozzie Johnson won the 100m dash, his first victory in the Blue and Gold, to highlight CSU in the second outdoor meet of the season, and the weekend. Also notable was Chris Seigler, who ran a personal best in the 3,000m steeplechase. On the women’s side, Brittney Greer finished third out of almost 70 competitors in the 100m dash, while Adrienne Cuff finished as the runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase, her first attempt at the event. Tamisha Foster also claimed runner-up honors in the triple jump.

March 12 – Baseball vs. Fordham – W, 11-2
In the same week in which Jaren Sustar hit a grand slam as his first home run, Zach Hagaman homered for his first hit of his career. Coupled with a solid pitching outing by Patrick Dolan and a six-run fifth inning, the Bucs cruised to their second victory in as many days over Fordham. Sustar was not asked to sacrifice four times, and instead posted a 3-for-4 day with a team-high three RBI. Derek Smith and Tom Burkett also posted multiple hits on the day.

March 13 – Baseball vs. Fordham – L, 7-3
The Bucs had the base runners but couldn’t get the timely hits that the needed to top the Rams in game three of the four-game series. The Bucs tried to keep pace, but were trailing 4-2 after four innings and the Bucs left nine runners on base. Jesse Cadenhead took the loss, despite striking out eight batters in six innings of work. Tom Burkett had a pair of hits on the day, while Brantley Meier and Zach Hagaman combined to score all three runs.

March 13 – W. Tennis @ College of Charleston – L, 5-2
Olga Makhova and Alia Nour posted singles victories, but it would be the only two wins on the day for CSU as they fell to their cross-town rivals 5-2. The Bucs led the doubles matches halfway through, but ended up falling 8-5 in all three pairings. Heather Isbell took her opponent to three sets in singles, including a 6-2 victory in set two, but eventually fell.
