Weekly Recap - February 1 - 7

The first week in February was highlighted by a men’s basketball victory over one of the hottest teams in the Big South, a women’s basketball shoot-out win over Asheville, and a couple of school records on the track in New York City.

Javon Young has been named this week’s CSU Athlete of the Week. Young broke the school record and hit the NCAA’s provisional mark in the 60m dash with a performance of 6.71 seconds. He went on to finish third in the championship division of the event that started with almost 60 runners.

Young went on to run the first leg of the 4x200m relay, an event that CSU dominated, breaking the meet and school record, winning by more than two full seconds. The time of 1:25.47 was just 0.42 seconds off the collegiate record held by Rutgers.

Kelsey Wasmer and Jamarco Warren also received serious consideration for this week’s honor.
February 1 – FCA Rally
The first event was want to discuss was not on the field/court/track of competition, but rather in the conference room of the Brewer Center. The first Monday of each month, the athletes, coaches and staffs come together for an FCA Rally. This month, the speaker was Adrian Despres, a world-renown speaker from Columbia, S.C., where he is the team chaplain for the USC football team. More than 50 decisions for Christ were made at the end of the powerful “four chairs” message. You can read more about the event at our main Web site.

February 1 – WBB @ Winthrop – L, 58-48
In their first regionally televised game of the season, the women’s basketball team battled hard but fell to Winthrop on the road. The game was televised on SportSouth in the southeast region. Shooting just 18 percent from three point range, one of the only bright spots was Kelsey Wasmer, who hit four threes and had a career-high nine rebounds, accounting for 21 points.
