Weekly Recap - December 13-19

With Christmas just five days away, we at Charleston Southern would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. Hopefully you will have a chance to see friends and family during this holiday season.

Freshman Sheldon Strickland has been named this week’s CSU athlete of the week after his incredible performance against the College of Charleston on Wednesday.

Even though the Bucs lost, Strickland was a perfect 7-for-7 from three point range, finishing with a career high of 27 points. He also had two rebounds and two steals in the game. The Cougars tried everything to stop Strickland, including switching 6-8 Antoine Wiggins on him, but it did not affect the freshman as he continue to pour in the buckets and keep CSU in the game with a chance to win late.

Also nominate: Kelsey Wasmer (Women’s Basketball)

Wednesday, December 15 – MBB Charleston Clash presented by Stokes Honda – vs. C of C – L, 69-77
Sheldon Strickland shot a perfect 7-for-7 from three point range and scored 27 points, shattering his career high, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars were led by two 20-point scorers in Jeremy Simmons and Andrew Goudelock. The Bucs actually had a better shooting percentage (45.3 percent / 41.9 percent) but made just three of their six free throw attempts, and only one player other than Strickland was able to connect on a three.

Friday, December 17 – WBB @ UNC Wilmington – L, 57-79
For the second time this year the Lady Bucs had to suit up for an early tipoff, going at 11:30 a.m. against Wilmington as they hosted 4,500 elementary school children for the game, putting the Bucs in the midst of a screaming frenzy for the majority of the game. The move paid off for the Seahawks as they used a 15-0 run in the first half to put CSU away. Kelsey Wasmer had 18 points, while Katie Tull has 15 and Lakeitha Alston added 10.

What’s coming up?
December 20 – WBB @ Mercer – 7 p.m.

December 21 – MBB vs. Bluefield – 7:30 p.m.

What up Buc Fans?!?

How’s everybody been?!? I know the Lady Bucs are feeling pretty good after that win Saturday! Yeah, if you didn’t hear the Lady Bucs took care of business Saturday against Pfeiffer and made sure that only the Bucs win in the Buc Dome (OBWB). Putting a beat down on Pfeiffer Saturday and getting back on the winning track was the perfect way to start off our winter break here at CSU. We finished off a long week of studying and practicing last Friday. It was funny because by Saturday morning the campus was pretty much empty besides our team and the guy’s basketball team after most students went home for the break. It’s a little different not being able to roll into the Caf for every meal or hear a bunch of chatter around the dorms from our hall mates, but it is nice to get to spend more time with our teammates. It’s also been really nice to not have to worry about classes or study hall this week. We have been able to really focus on just basketball and practice with what we need to do to get better. Of course many of us have also been spending some of our free time at the malls and outlets taking care of Christmas shopping and our Secret Santa gifts. That’s right, we all drew names for Secret Santas last week, and were excited for our Christmas Party at Coach Goodenough’s house tonight when we exchange gifts and find out who’s was who’s! And I know some people on the team have a countdown going so they already know this but in less than a week the Bucs will heading home for some time with our families for the holidays. First and most importantly though, we have to finish off this week of practice then don’t miss our game Friday at UNC Wilmington, GO BUCS! O and it hasn’t warmed up here much at all… and I know not all of you guys are lucky enough to have JG (Coach Goodenough) text you every morning to remind you to bundle up and tell you the wind chill, but take it from us… were freezing here for South Carolina weather!! Anyway that’s all the excitement for this week, hope you all have a great holiday season and enjoy time with friends and family! And while you’re with them don’t forget, “Above all, live each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” -1 Peter 4:8 Well, that’s all I got, but we want you all to know how much we really do appreciate everyone’s support and be sure to support your Lady Bucs on Friday against UNC Wilmington! So let’s go Bucs, MP, Bring it!

Weekly Recap - December 6-12

With finals last week it was a slow week for athletics, with just two on campus events, plus a couple of athletes who played in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl. Both basketball teams were victorious in their games, while the South won the senior bowl, thanks to the contributions of the Buccaneers, most notably Gerald Stevenson, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to go in the game.

One other thing that needs to be mentioned was the untimely passing of Will Bedenbaugh, one of the CSU baseball players, who was killed in a car accident late Saturday night. A tremendous athlete and person, the news shook the entire CSU family, and we certainly want to let the Bedenbaugh family, as well as all of those who knew Will, know that our thoughts, our condolences and our sincerest prayers are with you all.

Jamarco Warren has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week after his game-high 27 points in the Bucs’ 106-61 victory over Milligan. His points moved him into a tie for third place in CSU history with 1,557 career points.

Warren connected on eight of his 13 shots, including a 3-5 mark behind the arc and hit eight free throws to lead the way. Warren completed his day with a team high in assists (6) and steals (5). 15 of his points came in the second half, including 11 during a 38-9 run in which CSU put the game out of reach.

Also nominated: Kelvin Martin (Men’s Basketball), Katie Tull (Women’s Basketball), Kelsey Wasmer (Women’s Basketball)

Saturday, December 11 – WBB vs. Pfeiffer – W, 74-59
Katie Tull scored a career-high 29 points, while Kelsey Wasmer added her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, beating Pfeiffer 74-59 in the first game back after finals. CSU shot 41.7 percent for the game and hit a combined 10 three pointers (seven by Tull), adding 11 steals and forcing 26 Falcon Turnovers.

Saturday, December 11 – MBB vs. Milligan – W, 106-61
The first game back after finals, the men's team perhaps had some rust, holding a 45-39 lead after the first half against Milligan of the NAIA. If so, they shook it off nicely in the second, outscoring the visitors 66-22 in the second half, getting it done on both sides of the court. Kelvin Martin continued his hot-shooting, going 4-6 on the game and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line for 14 points, adding a team-high 14 rebounds. Jamarco Warren scored a team-high 27 points as four of the five starters finished with double figures, and all but two people who saw time, scored at least two points.

What’s coming up?
December 15 – MBB vs. College of Charleston (North Charleston Coliseum) – 7:30 p.m.

December 17- WBB @ UNC Wilmington – 11:30 a.m.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Kirklin Kirkpatrick - December 8, 2010

Hey Lady Buc Fans!

How’s it going out there? We’ve had a tough week here at CSU with some hard fought games and studying for final exams. We have been working very hard on the court to fix the little things that will help us win. Not only are we working hard on the court but off the court as well. This week is exam week! I was a little nervous because this is this the first time I have had to take exams at the college level. Fortunately, I only have to take three exams because I took an accelerated computer class earlier this semester which ended October 14th and I am in Freshman Seminar which does not have an exam. I have already taken two exams, College Algebra and Art Appreciation. I made an A on my Art exam and I am still waiting to receive my grade in math. My last exam is Friday- Public Speaking so wish me luck! Yesterday, December 7th, was a special day for me. It was my dad’s birthday and I found out that my cousin is having a baby girl. Her due date is Cinco de Mayo- pretty cool, huh? Ha.

I am really looking forward to Saturday… home game baby! OBWB (Only Bucs Win in the Bucdome) This is one of our goals as a team and I know that we can do it! Our opponent this Saturday is Pfeiffer at 2 pm so be there!! We are all excited to play and I know we’re going to have an awesome game to glorify God. It’s also a double header which is fun because I really like to watch the guys play... especially #11 Matt Kennedy :) Their play is much different from the guys teams where I’m from because guys couldn’t ever really dunk in games, so our men’s team is much more exciting to watch… I know this is a tad long but I just want to add- I love my team. We have a really special bond- better than any team I have ever been a part of and with every day I learn more about them and they teach me things about myself. I am so thankful for all of them. I love you guys! :)

Oh and beware there is a wind chill today (a text from JG at 6:51AM!) who ever knew it was going to be freezing in Charleston?! I was trying to get away from the cold weather! I'm from the mountains of Western North Carolina- it snowed there this week and my brother & sister were out of school.... so jealous! But I thought Charleston was warm- I was definitely mistaken! Well, that’s all that’s going on this week. Have a great Christmas holiday everyone! Remember, Luke 18:27 “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”- so bring it! MP!! GO BUCS!

Weekly Recap - November 29 - December 5

It is officially finals week here on campus, which means it will be a quiet week in terms of athletics. Both teams were in action last week, though, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

After averaging 15 points a game in two contests this week, Lakeitha Alston has been named the CSU Athlete of the Week.

Alston had nine points, two assists and two rebounds despite foul trouble against South Carolina, beating the bigger Gamecock forwards with her quickness. She followed that up with 21 points on the road at Furman, adding five rebounds as well.

Also nominated: Kelvin Martin (Men’s Basketball)

November 30 – MBB vs. Toccoa Falls – W, 120-43
Zimmy Nwogbo had his first career double-double and was one of six Bucs to score in double figures as CSU blew out Toccoa Falls, a team who showed up with seven players on the roster. It was good experience for the younger players, and they took advantage of it, scoring 66 points off the bench. The victory nearly set program records for points (141) and margin of victory (84). The Bucs finished the game shooting almost 60 percent from the field, and hit 13 of 23 three point attempts (56.5 percent). Every player who got in the game for CSU scored at least two points and had at least one rebound.

December 1 – WBB @ South Carolina – L, 75-53
Unlike the men’s game against TFC, this women’s score against USC wasn’t really indicative of the game, as CSU hung around for the majority of the game. In fact, midway through the first half it was just a one point game, and the lead was as low as seven points midway through the second half. Foul trouble hurt CSU, though, as Kelsey Wasmer picked up a couple of early fouls, and then Lakeitha Alston (4), Katie Tull (4), and Helen Terry (3) all had foul trouble as well.

December 4 – WBB @ Furman – L, 71-70
CSU overcame an 11 point halftime lead and tied the game late, but a free throw by Furman’s Kaitlin Murphy proved the final scoring of the day as Furman held on for the victory. Despite stellar performances from Katie Tull (24 points) and Lakeitha Alston (21 points), the Bucs could not get a shot off in the final minute of play, turning the ball over twice. Kelsey Wasmer added 10 rebounds and three assists, but only managed four points.

December 4 – MBB @ Coastal Carolina – L, 73-71
If Saturday’s game was any indication of how Big South play will look, fans should start buying tickets immediately! What a game between CSU and preseason favorite Coastal Carolina. The Bucs staged a furious comeback and tied the game with less than 10 seconds, thinking they were destined for OT with all the momentum. Chad Gray ended the hopes on a dunk with 1.7 seconds left that gave the Chanticleers the victory. Kelvin Martin shot 60 percent (6-10) and had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeremy Sexton had 14 points and Jamarco Warren overcame a tough start to finish with 11 points.

What’s Coming Up?
FINALS WEEK – Good luck to all our student-athletes and other students taking finals
December 11 – Women’s Basketball vs. Pfeiffer – 2 p.m.

Buccaneer BasketBlog - Helen Terry - December 1, 2010

The women's basketball team will be providing fans a unique look inside the program as members of the team contribute to a weekly blog.

Hey what’s up everybody? It’s your girl Helen aka “H.T” or “H-Teezy”, whichever one you prefer haha. Well this past week was very LOONG week for the LADY BUCS. It started off with a WIN Monday night in the BUC DOME over UNC Greensboro 77-67. We took off for Texas at 4:45 Thursday morning, It was a very funny flight because Shay had never flown before and her and Kiki were both SOOO SCARED once we took off, their faces were PRICELESS :(. Once we arrived in Lubbock, Texas we checked into our beautiful hotel at the Hawthorne Inn which was by far one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. We all spent our Thanksgiving night together and with family who had came to watch us play. Friday, Saturday and Sunday we had games back to back to back vs. Texas Tech, Sam Houston and American. Unfortunately we ended up falling short to all teams :(. We were very disappointed in our performance because we all knew we could have played much better than we did. After experiencing these losses it opened up our eyes to ALL the little things that we need to work on but we took it as a learning experience. After finishing up with the games we got a tour around Texas Tech by Coach Newland who showed us all the buildings and his old dorm and we took team pictures in front of their Christmas tree & university seal :) which u can find on facebook posted by Abby Poole lol. During the tour, we stopped at the best frozen yogurt place I had ever been in. When I walked it I felt like a kid in a candy shop. You fixed your own cup from self serve machines. They had all the flavors you could think of cookies and cream, cheesecake, strawberry kiwi, pink lemonade, I mean you name it and more than likely they had it. On top of that they had ALLL the toppings, one of my favorites which are SOUR GUMMY WORMS yummy. I ended up getting the strawberry kiwi and pink lemonade mixed, with sour gummie worms, strawberries and kiwi on top and boy was it DELICIOUSSSSS. Our last day in Lubbock we got to go to the biggest one story mall in the nation! (As I was told from Katie Tull… sooo it might not be quite right lol jk love you girl). When we left the mall and were headed to the airport we saw little precious prairie dogs OMG I wanted to hop off the bus and catch me one and take it home with me too bad I couldn’t :( . We were scheduled to take off from Lubbock and head to Houston at 4:15 pm but once we got on the plane and settled the pilot comes on and tells us that the brakes are currently broken so we have to get off and wait for later departure. We were stuck at the Lubbock airport for 5 LOONG HOURS. We ended up having to fly to Dallas and stay the night there. Half of the team flew back to Charleston at 8:30 am and the rest didn’t arrive until 6 pm. Once we all were back in the Chuck we met for practice at 8 to prepare for a VICTORY over the Gamecocks and get back on the winning streak. Well that’s all for now folks continue to support your LADY BUCS. GET BIG…MP…BRING IT AYEEEEEEE!!!!
