Weekly Recap - May 9 - 15

As the seasons continue to wind down, we see the end of another tournament as the softball team ended the year with their championship, entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed. After upsetting and eliminating the No. 3 seed, Presbyterian, the Bucs fell to the top-ranked Radford Highlanders. The baseball team took two of three games from Presbyterian and is in the third seed after this weekend’s action with three conference games remaining in their conference tournament.

Due to a staff retreat this morning in the department, this release will be slightly abbreviated too. We mentioned baseball and softball, but would be remised if we didn’t include track, who had an excellent weekend. Tamisha Foster (triple jump) posted the best collegiate mark, as did Javon Young (100m dash). The 4x100m relay team broke the Big South and school record, winning the event in the fifth-best time on the entire eastern side of the U.S. All three, along with Patria Norman, will likely earn a bid to the NCAA Championship First Round, which will be announced later this week.

Jaren Sustar has been named this week's CSU Athlete of the Week after batting .722 (13-18) in four games last week, with four doubles, seven runs scored and four RBI.

Sustar opened his week with two hits, one double and one run at defending national champion South Carolina, and followed with a .733 clip in a Big South-series win over Presbyterian College. Sustar went 5-6 with two doubles and four runs in the series opener against the Blue Hose, and collected three hits and three RBI in game two. He concluded his week 3-4 at the plate on Sunday, and finished with a .722 on base percentage and .944 slugging percentage in helping the Buccaneers win their most Big South games (14) since the 2000 season.

Also Nominated: Kimberly Hobbs (Softball), Javon Young (Men's Track and Field)
