Weekly Recap - October 11 - 18

Volleyball is riding a three-game winning streak, the soccer team is establishing themselves as one of the best in the Big South with a dominant 8-0 victory over UNC Asheville, the cross country teams are at their best as they prepare for the Big South Championship, and football continues to post impressive performances despite the final score not being what they would like.

Also coming out this week were the preseason Big South men’s and women’s basketball polls as well as the preseason All-Big South selections. The men were picked seventh, while Jamarco Warren was selected to the all-conference team, while the women were picked fourth, their highest preseason ranking since 1996. Katie Tull earned a spot on the women’s all-conference team.

Gerald Stevenson can add CSU Athlete of the Week to his accomplishments after becoming the first player in CSU and Big South history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game.

Stevenson had returns of 92 and 81 yards, giving him three kick returns for touchdowns in the last two games. His 92-yard return made it on ESPN’s Top-10 Plays, coming in at #7. In addition to CSU Athlete of the Week, Stevenson was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, and the CFPA Kick Returner of the Week, both awards were given to Stevenson for the second-straight week.

Stevenson shattered the CSU and Big South records for all-purpose yards with 389 against Gardner-Webb.

October 15 – Cross Country at Royals Cross Country Challenge – M, 22nd, W, 16th
The cross country programs went to the Royals Cross Country Challenge, which proved to be a tough challenge as they ran against the likes of Georgia Tech and Florida State. It served its purpose, though, as five of the six runners on the men’s side ran season-best times on the Charlotte course, the last tune up before the Big South Championship on October 30. The women’s team had three runners post season-bests at the same meet, and everyone proved they had more to give, coming through the two-mile mark well ahead of their record pace.
