Weekly Recap - October 4 - 10

CSU had plenty of career performances this week, all while going against some of the best competition in the Big South. As a result, Gerald Stevenson and Charles James earned weekly honors from the Big South.

Charles James earned Big South Defensive Player and CSU Athlete of the Week honors for his performance against Liberty this weekend.

The sophomore defensive back tied the Big South Conference single-game record with a school-record three interceptions Saturday at Liberty, in addition to recording 10 total tackles (seven solo, three assisted) and four pass break-ups.  James limited Chris Summers to just four receptions for 48 yards and no touchdowns when he was in the game (Summers’ final reception, a 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with :28 seconds left was without James in the game).  James now has five interceptions in his last two games.

Also nominated: Amanda Hill (Volleyball), Marky Boyce (Soccer)

October 3-4 - Men’s Golf @ 3rd Annual Rees Jones Collegiate – 9th
The men’s golf team went to Daufuskie Island, an exclusive resort and golf club, to take part in the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State University at Haig Pointe. The team finished ninth overall with scores that were higher than normal, but that was true across the board as no individual finished the tournament under par. Jacobo Pastor led the way, making a jump from 23rd to 14th place individually on the final day.

Final Results

October 3 – Soccer vs. High Point – W, 3-2
It took extra time, but the Lady Bucs took advantage of some space in the box as Staci Ulichnie found Michelle Dennis wide open and the senior finished the job for the golden-goal game winner. Marky Boyce got her 14th goal of the season in the first half, while Toni Lashley added a second midway through the period, giving CSU a 2-0 lead. HPU came back right out of the gates at halftime and tied the score with 30 minutes left in the game. It wasn’t until the 102nd minute that CSU found the game winner.

October 8 – Volleyball vs. Asheville – L, 3-2
It was a hard-fought match with career highs from Amanda Hill (31 kills), Cori Holeman (15 kills) and Amy Nokes (58 assists), but it wasn’t enough against a balanced attack from Asheville. CSU won the first set 26-24 and the third set 25-22, but after a gutty performance in set four that went to the Bulldogs, the Lady Bucs couldn’t bounce back in the final set.

October 8 – Soccer @ Radford – T, 1-1
After a tumultuous trip that included bus trouble and traffic, the team arrived at the field, exhausted and frustrated. They were able to gather themselves, even bouncing back from a 1-0 deficit in the first half, earning a 1-1 draw with one of the best defensive teams in the Big South. It would have been easy to cash it in, but the senior-laden team fought to the bitter end. Michelle Dennis added her second goal of the week right out of the halftime gates to tie the score at 1-1.

October 9 – Football @ Liberty – L, 44-20
Charles James set a school record with three interceptions, while Gerald Stevenson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, the longest possible return in college football and his first return for a TD of his career. Five turnovers, including two late TOs really cost CSU, turning a 16-14 score into a 44-20 game. The Bucs looked to have the lead late in the game, trailing by two and driving, figuring they at least had a field goal, CSU fumbled the ball ending the threat with no points. Andrew Trudnowski came in at quarterback and provided what Coach Mills called an “inspiring performance” with a career-high 189 passing yards.

October 10 – Soccer @ VMI – W, 6-0
It obviously didn’t take the team long to recover from the long trip and tie two days earlier as the Bucs posted 33 shots and six goals in a 6-0 victory over VMI. Marky Boyce got her 15th and 16th goals of the season, while Morgann Wood scored her first tally of the year. The offense of the Bucs took the pressure off, but the defense held tough as well, allowing just 10 shots and forcing GK Amy Arroyo to make just two saves all game.
